Volume LVIII ANNALI DI BOTANICA 2000 A PRELIMINARY LIST OF RARE OR ENDANGERED IRIDACEAE SPECIES At this meeting the importance of focussing on rare and endangered Iridaceae species in each country became evident. A complete check list of the conservation status of rare and endangered Irid a cea e species is not yet estabilished. Here we present (Appendix) the list of the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC)* for rare and endangered Iridaceae, according to the IUCN categories. Some problems occur in listing rare and endangered species. For example, although in Israel legislation has protected all Iris species since 1964, so that we have now a complete list, this is not the case in other countries and for other genera. Furthermore, unsolved taxonomic problems confused the issue in some species and the exact distribution of others is still unknown. Here, we want to stimulate colleagues working on Irid a c e a e to send new information to the monitoring centre to improve the current red list. In Italy, we have species of bearded irises which are endangered because of animal and/or human influence. For example, in some areas of Italy, wild boar populations have been promoted to favour hunting, with resulting damage to Iris populations which have been rapidly reduced to a few individuals, as I. relicta Colas, on Monte delle Fate (Southern Lazio), because the boars dig up Iris rhizomes. In other areas, the intensive construction of houses has endangered some populations, for example, in the case of/, setina Colas. (Latina), a bearded Iris that flowers in February. -

Botanic gardens and other ex-situ facilities such as seed banks are among the most extensive yet underused plant conservation resources in the world. Botanic gardens are now undertaking activities that bridge the gap between in situ and ex situ conservation, with the living collections being used as source material for reintroduction programmes. One of the most important goal of Botanic garden of Šiauliai University is to conserve rare species in ex situ collections. Largest protected species are cumulated in Mountain plants, and in the Geography and systematic collections. In Mountain plants collection are 17 species of plants published in the list of threatened European plant species. Altogether in this section grow 75 rare and endemic species, mostly from the Alps, Pyrenees, Tatry. The plants are vanishing because of biological features of the species, climatic alternation, human activities, etc. Besides these species are very decorative and appreciated in the gardening. Most plants growing in Geography and systematic collection are rare in Lithuania. From 357 plants inscribed in Lithuanian Red Data book (2007) there grow 94 species. The species of the Lithuania‘s Red Book are divided into 5 categories, which correspond the old categories of international union of nature protection. There are growing 4% of extincted plants of 0 (Ex) category, 19% of 1 (E), 31% of 2 (V), 28% of 3 (R), 11% of 4 (I) and 6% of 5 (Rs) category. -

Bhopal. 2 Professor Department of Botany Government M.V.M. Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Abstract: Medicinal plants have been used in different systems of medicine from centuries. Among the most important medicinal plants Iris species have also been included in this category which belongs to family Iridaceae. It has wide range of medicinal and pharmacological uses. Rhizomes of some Iris species are rich sources of bioactive molecules, such as flavonoids, xanthones, stilbenes, simple phenolics, iridal type triterpenoids, quinines and irones. Isoflavonoids are the major constituents of all Iris species and about 50 different isoflavonoids in the form of diglucosides, triglucosides are reported in Iris. Consumption of isoflavonoids is reported to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer and also have diverse biological activities like antimicrobial, estrogenic and insecticidal. Further research work is needed to explore the wide range of applications of Iris species, so that maximum utilization can be done for human welfare. The aim of this review is to analyze already published work on ethnomedicinal and ethnoveterinary uses of genus Iris. Keywords: Iris species, Secondary metabolites, Medicinal uses. INTRODUCTION The allopathic medicines are the modern ones developed on the back of science in medicine. It is an artificial creation. The contents of all allopathic medicines mostly are chemicals synthesized in a lab. -

We were extremely fortunately to see the Marsican Brown Bear snoozing in the sun, the only down side being that, as we were only en route from the airport, we didn’t have telescopes! Chamois, the alpine flowers and the scenery at the top of the Val di Rose were a particular delight, plus the sounders of Wild Boar with their piglets, the Red and Roe Deer and Apennine Hare. The Rosy Starlings in Val Fondillo were an unexpected bonus! We enjoyed a wide selection of birds, butterflies, other insects and flowers, especially the orchids in their abundance, all to the soundtrack of Field Crickets and Cuckoos. Geraldine and Marco, as ever, provided a warm welcome and excellent hospitality, introducing us to several local specialities. An excellent week in a delightful location! Day 1 Thursday 24th May UK to Rome to Pescasseroli Five group members travelled from the UK to Rome airport on different flights, where they met with Jessica, who had led a trip the previous week.
