Symphony Box NOTES
Notes on Philip Glass’s Symphonies By Richard Guérin For a very long time in the 20th century composers more or less ceased to compose in the antiquated form of the symphony. There were a number of very practical reasons why composers, Philip Glass included, neglected the form. To some degree, it has come as a surprise to Glass himself that this body of work has evolved to such a degree. In interviews, the self-described “theater composer” seems to not know what quite to make of or how to talk about this now large group of musical children which he has brought into this world. Now with all ten symphonies in view, composed over a period of two decades, we can begin to see how they take their place in the greater musical world and what role these pieces play in the composer’s own creative output. By the 1960s when Philip Glass was coming of age as a composer the world of new classical music was largely controlled by the European avant-garde. For more than half a century a certain brand of modern music rose to primacy and had deep influence over the programming in concert halls and opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic. It’s fair to say that traditional classical music audiences generally felt forsaken by this turn of historical events. The pleasure principle in music that had existed for over 400 years had been discarded. The music which was being composed by living composers of the approved international style of the time, made no attempt to consider likes or dislikes of the classical music loving public. -
ADRIANNE LENKER ANNOUNCES TWO NEW ALBUMS, Songs
September 2, 2020 For Immediate Release ADRIANNE LENKER ANNOUNCES TWO NEW ALBUMS, songs AND instrumentals, OUT OCTOBER 23RD ON 4AD LISTEN TO LEAD SINGLE OFF songs, “anything” Photo Credit: Genesis Báez Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker announces two new albums, songs and instrumentals, out October 23rd on 4AD, and today presents a new single, “anything.” “anything” is a look into Lenker’s introspective and quietly magical catalogue. Backed by soft fingerpicking, Lenker’s magnetic voice references a flurry of memories and beautiful imagery - a hot sun, juicy mango, family fighting on Christmas eve, a circle of trees. It’s a deep and unflinching love song. As the track continues, its pulse held steady by Lenker playing her guitar with a paintbrush, her words get more abstract: “weren’t we the stars in heaven // weren’t we the salt in the sea // dragon in the new warm mountain // didn’t you believe in me?” Listen to Adrianne Lenker’s “anything” songs and instrumentals are two distinct collections, both written and recorded in April after Big Thief’s March tour was abruptly cut short due to coronavirus. After returning to the states from Europe, Lenker decamped to a one room cabin in the mountains of western Massachusetts. “I grew really connected to the space itself,” says Lenker. “The one room cabin felt like the inside of an acoustic guitar -- it was such a joy to hear the notes reverberate in the space.” With a hankering to capture the feel of the space, Lenker enlisted the help of engineer Philip Weinrobe, gathering a mass of tape machines, a binaural head, and a pile of XLR cables. -

2021 ASCAP Accolades Booklet
MUSIC. MORE THAN EVER. ASCAP MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2020 ASCAP MUSIC WAS A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS IN 2020. In a year marked by division, uncertainty and isolation, the global ASCAP family lifted our spirits and kept us connected when we couldn’t be with each other in person. ASCAP members met this challenging year head on. They wrote extraordinary music that spoke to the difficult times we live in. They inspired change and reflection, and united fans from disparate backgrounds. They broke records and barriers. Here’s a look back at some of ASCAP members’ remarkable achievements from 2020 – just a few of the countless reasons we had to be proud of the 800,000 songwriters, composers and publishers we represent. TOP BRASS When global pop star Dua Lipa released her highly-anticipated sophomore album Future Nostalgia on March 27 of 2020, the world was in the process of plunging into the new reality of COVID-19. Pre-lockdown, the London native had already locked in GRAMMYs, Brit Awards, the ASCAP Vanguard Award and an ocean of critical praise. But Future Nostalgia rocketed her into the stratosphere, by giving the world exactly what we needed in 2020. The album struck a chord with millions of housebound fans looking to dance their anxieties away from the safety of their homes – especially the infectious disco hit “Don’t Start Now,” her highest-charting song in the US so far. And despite the cancellation of a massive tour, Dua even managed to bring a live experience to her fans through her four- night livestream Studio 2054, a stunning tribute to New York’s iconic club Studio 54 featuring superstar guests including Bad Bunny, Elton John, FKA Twigs, J Balvin and Kylie Minogue. -

Jackie Mittoo at Home and Abroad: the Cultural and Musical Negotiations of a Jamaican Canadian
JACKIE MITTOO AT HOME AND ABROAD: THE CULTURAL AND MUSICAL NEGOTIATIONS OF A JAMAICAN CANADIAN KAREN ANITA ELOISE CYRUS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2015 © Karen A. E. Cyrus, 2015 ABSTRACT Donat Roy ‘Jackie’ Mittoo (1948-1990) made significant contributions to the genres of rock steady and reggae as a musician, producer and musical director of Studio One in Jamaica. He is renowned for the number of recordings that he arranged at Studio One, as well as his own instrumental recordings that featured the organ. He was also among a number of Jamaican musicians who migrated to Canada at the end of the 1960s and was active on the music scene in Toronto, as well as in the UK and the USA. Although Mittoo’s significance to the emergence and dissemination of Jamaican popular music (JPM) is acknowledged by music industry personnel, most studies focus on the big names of reggae and the theme of social protest in their music. Little attention is given to the role of session musicians such as Mittoo and the instrumental recordings that they created. This study attempts to redress this oversight; it will offer the first in-depth account of the career and instrumental recordings of Jackie Mittoo. This dissertation is in two parts. The first section presents a career biography which situates Mittoo’s role within the collective experience of Jamaican session musicians at home in Jamaica, and abroad in the centers of JPM production in Canada, the UK, and the USA. -
New England Traditions in Folk Music by Sandy Paton
BRAVE BOYS New World Records 80239 New England Traditions in Folk Music by Sandy Paton The English-speaking population of the northeastern United States arrived in three major stages. First were the English, who came to this country in the seventeenth century to escape religious persecution; from their initial settlements in Massachusetts, these early colonists quickly spread into what are now Rhode Island and Connecticut. The eighteenth century saw a great influx of Scotch- Irish from the north of Ireland who were forced to migrate following a series of repressive economic measures imposed on them by the Crown. In the mid-nineteenth century, fleeing starvation and the cholera epidemic that followed the potato famine of 1845-47, thousands of Irish immigrants arrived in America. Each of these groups, together with a smaller number of Scots, brought with it the traditional music of its native land, and much of that music thrives to this day. The songs the Irish brought here are still very much in circulation and are more easily gathered than those of the earlier migrations, although it is not always possible to identify a specific geographical source for the classic ballads we find in the Northeast. The Scotch-Irish were but a century removed from their native Scotland; thus many of our Scottish ballads may well have arrived by way of Ulster. Together with this imported music we find a large number of native American songs and ballads in this region. Lumbermen created many songs directly related to their occupation. Songs of the sea were composed on both sides of the Atlantic and freely exchanged, for many American sailors shipped out of English ports--not always of their own free will.
