➢ l'examen pourra avoir lieu.

David BINAN

SECONDARY NEWS The Student Services Team of Telopea Park School provides a wide range of support for students and their families. Please feel welcome to contact myself, Mrs. Kylie Louis (614 23379), Mrs. Mary De Poorter (614 23393), Adam Fahey, Youth Worker (61423358), or the appropriate Year Co-ordinator to discuss concerns and enable us to facilitate relevant appointments and communication on your behalf. Year Coordinators include Mr Cade Williams (Year 10), Mrs Diana Webster (Year 9), Mrs Melanie Consola (Year 8) 2020 and Ms Sheree Avard (Year 7). Cade Williams has also been appointed as the Year 7 Coordinator and has begun the extremely busy role of transitioning both the outgoing Year 10 and incoming Year 7 (2020) cohorts. Our Year Coordinators send a year group

specific letter at the beginning of each term and welcome opportunities to discuss any concerns regarding your children. I encourage you to continue to support your child with homework routines and organisation, particularly taking the time to review the curriculum documents, assessment items and calendars, including Managebac. To support our students Study Group will begin again on Wednesday afternoons (from 3.15- 4.30pm) in A1, facilitated by our Youth Worker and assisted by members of the School Volunteer Mentor Program. Students are welcome to access Study Group by providing a signed parental consent note, available from Student Services. Mr Cherian is also available for Mathematics support in the Secondary Library during Thursday lunchtimes and many of our teachers are offering subject-related support within their various faculties, advertised via the Student Daily Notices or the notice board in Student Services. Communication between parents/carers, students and school is extremely important to the success of each student. Please inform Student Services of any change in contact details such as phone numbers or addresses as soon as possible. It is crucial that the school has up to date information with which to communicate as required. Telopea Park School prioritises attendance as crucial for students to achieve to their potential and maintain connectivity to the school. Absences are reported on each student’s record as a legal requirement. We have an electronic absence program which is marked each school session including every class, Contact Group, Assembly and Personal and Social Sessions, to monitor attendance. School hours are 8.50am – 3.15pm, Monday – Friday. Students arriving late to school are expected to sign in at Student Services, regardless of time, with a note explaining their absence. A parent/carer must contact the school within five days to explain an absence from school. Students repeatedly attending late to school , without explanation, may receive a detention from Student Services. The most effective way of communicating with the school is via email: [email protected] or phone: 614 23385 (with a subsequent letter or email). Please, also, note that students are not to attend school before 8.20am each day, as supervision is not available before that time. Students needing to leave the school, for any reason, during the day, must provide a permission note from a parent/carer, collect a Leave Pass at Student Services and wait at the Front Office at the requested leaving time for collection by a parent/carer It would be greatly appreciated if students could gain their Leave Pass as early as possible in the day and are punctual when waiting for their parents/carers. Students who become unwell during the school day should first get a note from their classroom teacher and then attend First Aid in the Secondary Library. First Aid staff will contact parents/carers, facilitate students going home and amend attendance records as required.

Telopea Park School students are required to wear appropriately-coloured clothing as part of the school uniform, promoting unity and membership of our school community. Black leather shoes are an Occupational Health and Safety requirement of many subjects and students not adhering to these regulations may be excluded from taking part in classes in Arts, Technology and Science. This week we extend a very warm welcome to Catherine Buatois (Conseillère Pedagogique), Raphael Fernandez( 1.1), Florent Buatois (Yr.4.1 & 4.2) and Gwladys Villain- Renaudon (5.1 & 5.2). We hope that their time with us is enjoyable and professionally stimulating. We have an outstanding reputation at Telopea Park School for providing a high standard of teaching and learning which is due to our teachers, students and your support as parents and carers. It is our community that makes a difference and the great community spirit that is present here is evident throughout the school. This helps to provide the best possible academic and social/emotional outcomes for our students.

In collaborative teams our dedicated teachers not only plan curricula and assessment tools but also regularly focus on a series of questions which are based on the Professional Learning Community (PLC) principles. These include: What is it we want our students to know? How will we know if our students are learning? How will we respond when students do not learn ? How will we enrich and extend the learning for students who are proficient? (DeFour). I would like to commend the teachers excellent work that occurs behind the scenes during the meeting times within and outside of their working day.

Each semester we send a Parent Overview home with students. These are designed to provide important dates for your calendar, a guide to the areas your children will be studying as well as information on curricula to be covered. Please take some time to read it.

The SRC usually meet every fortnight during lunch time to voice the opinions of their peers. This provides each student with an opportunity to lead certain initiatives throughout the year. We are currently working on a student support group of the playground and the number of volunteers to give a helping hand to younger students is impressive. Forthcoming events may include a crazy hair day and a sausage sizzle to raise money for charity.

Aurore Severac and her team of helpers had a very successful wear a green for garden day on Thursday 1 August. Much work as been done by Aurore and students during lunch times to better our environment. Together they have produced some fine crops which have been shared among the Telopea community. Students were asked to make a gold donation and $179 dollars was raised. Sincere thanks to Aurore and her many helpers.

On Friday 2 August our Year 6 students travelled to the to view the adaptation of Jackie French’s novel, Hitler’s Daughter. Students participated in the Theatre Master Class and experienced a Q & A session with the cast. What a wonderful way to provide students with an authentic

learning experience while aligning with the Australian curriculum for Drama and English. Thank you to staff who attended and particularly Naomi Lamb who was the organising teacher for this excursion.

On Monday 5 August students from Years 1-6 participated in the annual school Athletics Carnival. Thank you to all parents and community members who assisted on the day. Many thanks to Cathy Marot who organised this wonderful whole school event. Her enthusiasm for ensuring that students were prepared for their events was palpable. Teachers and students had a very successful day.

Do not hesitate to contact me or other members of the Telopea Park School Primary team should you have a question or concern you would like clarified. Kind Regards, Anna McGown Deputy Principal

Bien cordialement, Anna McGown Principale-adjointe

School Upgrades

• Our first project has already started in Secondary with fitting out of a new state of the art Science Lab. The lab will accommodate two classes if nessesary with two interactive boards, this

will be an exciting space that will facilitate a STEM approach to teaching and learning. This work will be completed by the end of term 3.

• Work will commence on two major projects during this term. The first project is a roof upgrade which will include replacement of tiles and tin, insulation installed to improve student/teacher comfort and reduce green house omissions and the costs of utilities. Also being replaced are gutters, downpipes and some sumps, including checking and replacing some storm water drains. The roof will also be strengthened to allow for more solar panels fitted in the future. At times there will be scafolding around the building, cranes on site and heavy vehicles entering the school. We will ensure this is kept to a minimum during school hours. There may be at times disruption due to traffic, but a traffic management plan will be in place. I will regularly meet with the site forman to ensure that student and staff safety are always our priority and that teaching and learning are not compromised.

• Our final but most exciting project is the long awaited upgrade of the secondary courtyard. This is located in the centre of our school, the area is the original playground. I am hoping, when the work starts, we do not dig up any dinasaurs! The two diagrams below will give you an idea of what the finished area will look like. During construction the main secondary student toilets will not be available for use and we will have portable toilets on site in an area still to be determined. Some exits will be closed and signage will be in place to redirect access for students, staff and visitors.

As we will have various contractors on site to complete these upgrades, please be assured that they have all been inducted onto this site and know the importance of appropriate safety procedures when working in a school enviroment.

I am available to discuss any concerns you may have.

Kind regards, Mary Ryan Business Manager 61423356

P&C NEWS (version française un peu plus bas) P&C Social Event – Welcoming New Teachers The P&C will be holding mid-year welcome drinks for the arriving New French teachers. Come and meet some of the Telopea’s new French staff, P&C Executives and members of the parent community and learn about what the P&C does.

New French Teachers Buddy Program Each year Telopea Park School is fortunate to receive new French teachers arriving to teach our children the French school curriculum at Telopea Park School. Some teachers arrive directly from France and others from other countries. They bring a wealth of knowledge and culture to our school.

Moving to a new country can be stressful and the New Teacher Buddy Program is designed to assist new incoming French teachers to make a smooth transition. Let us join together to welcome them to Canberra. In the process we hope to create some memorable friendships and promote further understanding between our two countries.

Many teachers arrive with little knowledge of Canberra, the Australian culture. They are required to find their own accommodation and this process is often difficult in a new country. Let us give them the support for a smooth start.

If you are able to commit to becoming a buddy, please send an email to [email protected] u including your name, contact details, children’s ages and years – we will try to match people according to these details
