2019 Annual Discussion Meeting Environmental Change: pace, magnitude and impact Thursday 3rd January – Saturday 5th January @QRA2019 Joining instructions We are delighted that you are able to join us for the 2019 Quaternary Research Association Annual Discussion Meeting. This document provides further information about the Conference and the Conference venue. Venue information The Conference will be held at the main Chester Campus on Parkgate Road. The Chester Parkgate Road Campus is situated just outside the City of Chester on the A540 in the county of Cheshire. Please refer to the Campus Maps in Appendix 1. Getting here By car: We suggest you use a route planner (e.g. www.theaa.com) if you are travelling by car, entering the destination postcode: CH1 4AR. The Chester Campus main entrance is on the A540 (Parkgate Road). On-site parking is free for delegates. Please display the sign (Appendix 2) in your windscreen. Please park considerately in any of the marked bays around the Campus. By rail: Those travelling by rail should disembark at Chester Railway Station (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/CTR.aspx). The station is approximately a 20-minute walk (1 mile) from the Chester Parkgate Road Campus (see QRA2019 ADM - Joining Instructions Page 3 the below suggested walking route). By air: The closest airports to the University are either Manchester Airport or Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Manchester Airport – take a train from the airport to Manchester Oxford Road and a second train to Chester Railway Station. The station is approximately 20 minutes (1 mile) from the Chester Parkgate Road Campus (see the above suggested walking route). Liverpool John Lennon Airport does not have a train station within the airport grounds so you should get the 80A bus to Liverpool South Parkway, take a train to Liverpool Lime Street Station followed by a second train to Chester Railway Station. The station is approximately a 20-minute walk (1 mile) from the Chester Parkgate Road Campus (see the above suggested walking route). Bus, taxi and bicycle information: Local buses run in and around Chester. To find the best route for you go to: http://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/transport_and_roads/public_trans port/bus_timetables,_route_maps_and/bus_service_timetables.aspx. There are a number of private taxi services that run within the Chester area. Two of which are King Kabs (01244 343 434) and Abbey taxis (01244 318 318). Hackney cabs are often available at the main train station. Staying here The University has 280 en-suite rooms available on the Chester Parkgate Road Campus. Those who have chosen to stay at the University will be booked into Astbury House (Building Number 25 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1; http://www.chester.ac.uk/node/23183) or Fisher House (Building Number 27 on the Campus Map); https://www.chester.ac.uk/node/23789), which have a combined capacity of 180 rooms. Breakfast is included on the morning of Friday 4th and Saturday 5th January 2019 and will be served in Whites Dining Room (Building Number 29 on the Campus Map) between 08:00 and 09:00. o Check-in on Thursday 3rd of January is from 10:00. Check-in on Friday 4th January is from 08:30. In all cases, check-in is at the Conference Registration Desk in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map). o Check-out is at 09:30 at the latest on Saturday 5th January. Room keys should be deposited with a member of staff at the Registration Desk in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map). If unstaffed, please pass your room key to a member of the organising committee. On Saturday morning, luggage may be left securely until departure in the Beswick Building, room 001 (Building Number 17 on the Campus Map). Alternatively, delegates may choose to stay in Chester City Centre (a 15‒20 minute walk (approximately 0.8 miles) from the Parkgate Road Campus) where there is a wide range of accommodation options (please see https://www.visitcheshire.com/chester). A suggested walking route between Chester City Centre and the Chester Parkgate Road Campus is shown overleaf. 1.2.2 Accessibility There are disabled parking bays across campus (please see Appendix 1) as well as access to disabled washroom facilities (in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1) and in Whites Dining Room (Building Number 29 on the Campus Map). Please contact [email protected] if additional information regarding specific accessibility is required. 1.2.3 Personal Property The safekeeping of guests’ property, including money and valuables, must remain the responsibility of participants. QRA2019 ADM - Joining Instructions Page 6 2. Registration A Registration Desk will be open at several points during the conference (see below). Delegates should register their attendance as soon as possible after arrival. The Registration Desk is located in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1). Once registered, delegates will receive a name badge and a book of abstracts. Thursday 3rd January 2019: Registration opening times are as follows: 10:00‒11:30 13:30‒14:30 19:00‒19:30 Friday 4th January 2019: Registration opening times are as follows: 08:30‒09:00 13:00‒13:30 15:00‒15:30 Saturday 5th January 2019 Registration opening times are as follows: 08:30‒09:00 3. Oral and Poster presentations 3.1. Oral presentations and venue Oral presentation slots are 20 minutes each. Presentations should not exceed 15 minutes in duration, leaving 5 minutes for questions. Presentations should be saved on a USB stick and will be uploaded prior to the start of sessions. The operating platform is Windows 10. Please avoid using your own hardware for your presentations as we will not have the necessary cables available. Oral presentations are currently scheduled to take place in the Beswick Lecture Theatre, room 017 (Building Number 17 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1). In the event of the capacity of this venue being exceeded, we will relocate to an alternative venue. Such updates will be communicated via twitter (@QRA2019) and on the conference website (https://www1.chester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/events/quaternary-research- association-2019-annual-discussion-meeting?list=5879). Any updated information will also be relayed upon registration. 3.2. Poster presentations and venue Posters will be displayed in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1). Posters will be displayed in landscape orientation and posters may be up to A0 in size. Posters may be put up at any time and you will be provided with a board location number for your poster. Although posters may be displayed for the duration of the conference, a dedicated poster session will take place on Thursday 3rd January at QRA2019 ADM - Joining Instructions Page 7 approximately 18:30 (with a wine reception). In addition, refreshment breaks will take place in Small Hall and so there are multiple opportunities for posters to be viewed. We politely request that delegates do not take photographs of posters without the authors’ consent. 4. Refreshment breaks, lunch and wine reception Refreshment breaks (30 minutes in duration) will take place in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map in Appendix 1). Lunch will be served in Whites Dining Hall (Building Number 29 on the Campus Map). Please advise of dietary requirements during the on-line registration and payment process. The wine reception will take place in Small Hall (Building Number 24 on the Campus Map) from approximately 18:30 on Thursday 3rd January. Lunch, refreshment breaks and the wine reception are included in the conference fee. 5. Conference Dinner Credit: Michael D Beckwith The Conference Dinner will take place in Chester Cathedral on the evening of Friday 4th January 2019. If you wish to attend the dinner, please book and select your menu by the 30th November midnight deadline. QRA2019 ADM - Joining Instructions Page 8 Menu selection and payment can be made via the link on the Conference Website (https://www1.chester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/events/quaternary-research- association-2019-annual-discussion-meeting?list=5879). Delegates who have not pre- booked the conference meal by the stated deadline will be unable to attend. The event will begin with a wine reception at 19:30, with a finishing time of 22:30‒23:00. Wine and water is provided with the meal, but there will be a cash bar at the venue for additional alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The Cathedral is located on St. Werburgh Street in Chester City Centre (CH1 2DY) and is approximately a 15-minute walk (0.7 miles) from the Chester Parkgate Road Campus (see the suggested walking route overleaf).
