Sv ir id o v received 24.II.2000 Summary: 630 species of the Noctuidae are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 2 species [Mesapamea hedeni Graeser and Amphidrina amurensis Staudinger ) are noted from Europe for the first time and one more— Nycteola siculana Fuchs —from Russia. 3 species ( Catocala optata Godart , Helicoverpa obsoleta Fabricius , Pseudohadena minuta Pungeler ) are deleted from the list. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Notes on the Scottish Macro-moth List, 2015 This list aims to include every species of macro-moth reliably recorded in Scotland, with an assessment of its Scottish status, as guidance for observers contributing to the National Moth Recording Scheme (NMRS). It updates and amends the previous lists of 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014. The requirement for inclusion on this checklist is a minimum of one record that is beyond reasonable doubt. Plausible but unproven species are relegated to an appendix, awaiting confirmation or further records. Unlikely species and known errors are omitted altogether, even if published records exist. Note that inclusion in the Scottish Invertebrate Records Index (SIRI) does not imply credibility. At one time or another, virtually every macro-moth on the British list has been reported from Scotland. Many of these claims are almost certainly misidentifications or other errors, including name confusion. However, because the County Moth Recorder (CMR) has the final say, dubious Scottish records for some unlikely species appear in the NMRS dataset. A modern complication involves the unwitting transportation of moths inside the traps of visiting lepidopterists. Then on the first night of their stay they record a species never seen before or afterwards by the local observers. Various such instances are known or suspected, including three for my own vice-county of Banffshire. Surprising species found in visitors’ traps the first time they are used here should always be regarded with caution. Clerical slips – the wrong scientific name scribbled in a notebook – have long caused confusion. An even greater modern problem involves errors when computerising the data. -

Impact of Outdoor Lighting on Moths: an Assessment

Outdoor lighting has sharply increased over the last four decades. Lep idopterists have blamed it for causing declines in populations of moths. How outdoor lighting affects moths, however, has never been comprehensively assessed. The current study makes such an assessment on the basis of published literature. Outdoor lighting disturbs Hight, navigation, vision, migration, dispersal, oviposition, mating, feeding and crypsis in some moths. In addition it may disturb circadian rhythms and photoperiodism. It exposes moths to increased predation by birds, bats, spiders, and other predators. However, destruction of vast numbers of moths in light traps has not eradicated moth populations. Diverse species of moths have been found in illuminated urban environments, and extinctions due to electric lighting have not been documented. Outdoor lighting does not appear to affect Hight or other activities of many moths, and counterbalancing eco logical forces may reduce or negate those disturbances which do occur. Despite these observations outdoor lighting may inHuence some populations of moths. The result may be evolutionary modification of moth behavior, or disruption or elimination of moth populations. The impact of lighting may increase in the future as outdoor lighting expands into new areas and illuminates moth populations threatened by other disturbances. Re ducing exposure to lighting may help protect moths in small, endangered habitats. Low pressure sodium lamps are less likely than are other lamps to elicit flight-to-light behavior, and to shift circadian rhythms. -

Ein Beitrag Zur Kenntnis Der Biologie Von Hydraecia Petasitis Dbl

(Lep., Noctuidae) von Uwe Friebe eingegangen am 14.11.1991 Am 9.V.1987 unternahm ich mit Herrn Gelbrecht (Königs-Wusterhausen) eine Exkursion in den Hartensteiner Wald im Landkreis Zwickau. Im Muldental (ca. 235m) befindet sich an einem Teich ein großer Bestand von Petasites hybridus. Uns fiel auf, daß die Blütenköpfe nach unten hingen. Vorsichtig schnitten wir die Stengel auf und fanden junge Räupchen von Hydraecia petasitis. In den folgenden Jahren bemühten sich Mitglieder der entomo- logischen Vereinigung "Papilio" Zwickau um die Zucht dieser Noctuidenart. Einige Beobachtungen, die gleichzeitig Hinweise für die Biologie der Art darstellen, möchte ich in dieser Arbeit wiedergeben. Ende April bis Anfang Mai findet man die jungen Raupen in den Blütenstengeln. Es ist gleichzeitig die Hauptblütezeit von Petasites hybridus. Das Vorhandensein der Raupe wird an den nickenden Blütenköpfen deutlich. Wahrscheinlich überwintert das Ei. An der Stelle, an der die Raupe eingedrungen ist, hängen die Blütenköpfe. Es ist zu bezweifeln, daß die Raupe überwintert. Die Raupe verschließt jede Pflanzenöffnung mit Kot. Sicherlich ist die Art lichtscheu und die Raupe sorgt durch das Verschließen der Pflanzenstengel für eine Erhöhung der Luft feuchtigkeit. Später fressen die Raupen in den Blattstengeln. Es empfiehlt sich aber, zur Zucht die Raupen bereits im frühen Larvenstadium zu entnehmen. Später eingetragene Raupen sind oft stark von Schlupfwespen und Erzwespen parasitiert. Item no *EDINBVRGH* Report no THE CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL Edinburgh Local Biodiversity Action Plan Phase 3 2010-2015 Planning Committee 3 December 2009 1 Purpose of report 1.1 To report to Committee on the review of the Edinburgh Local Biodiversity Action Plan, and seek approval for the resulting Edinburgh Local Biodiversity ' Action Plan Phase 3, 2010-2015. 2 Summary 2.1 The Council has a duty to further the conservation of biodiversity under the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004. This is achieved through the Edinburgh Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP). Production of the Edinburgh LBAP is a key action in the Edinburgh Partnership Single Outcome Agreement 2009-2012. The current Edinburgh LBAP details action taken for the period 2004-2009. Over the last six months the Edinburgh Biodiversity Partnership has reviewed achievements from this phase of the LBAP, and outlined the work required for the next five year phase. This work is now complete and the appended document details the action to be taken for 201 0-2015. 2.2 A number of actions within Phase 3 of the plan will be the responsibility of Services for Communities. Therefore it is recommended that the report is referred to the Transport, Infrastructure and Environment Committee for information. 3 Main report 3.1 The Edinburgh LBAP was launched in March 2000 as a new initiative to conserve and enhance Edinburgh's natural heritage. The plan was prepared by a partnership of many organisations actively engaged in the conservation of natural heritage. It put forward an ambitious programme of actions to: conserve and enhance natural habitats within the city; address the decline in biodiversity, particularly of priority species; raise awareness of biodiversity issues in the public consciousness.
