  • Songstress Marilyn Ashford-Brown “Herstory” in the Making
Songstress Marilyn Ashford-Brown “Herstory” in the Making Marilyn Ashford-Brown is an American Singer-Songwriter and Recording Artist of trans-continental acclaim, who followed Paul Anka’s lyric lead in his hit tune, My Way, by doing it “her” way. In today’s ever-changing, youth-targeted music industry, R&B veteran Marilyn Ashford-Brown has not allowed the new epochs of the marketplace to hamper her musical ontogeny. For more than three decades the Washington, D. C. native has performed stateside throughout the surrounding Metropolitan Areas of the Nation’s Capital. She has also wowed audiences abroad, working venues in Hamburg, Germany, The United Kingdom, Amsterdam, and Costa Brava, Spain, largely by word of mouth and social media outlets. With five (5) independently released cd’s to her credit, Marilyn wrote and co-produced ninety seven percent of the songs. She attributes her international success to her 2009 cd release entitled Just Doing Me, and simply trusting her instincts. Track one of that release, I’ve Got A Feeling, even today, remains timeless and of the moment. Although this cut did not garner much airplay on domestic radio stations, it managed to secure a spot on the playlists of international radio stations, including Tokyo, which led to international performance opportunities. Washington Post freelance writer, Mike Joyce, gave the Just Doing Me! release a glaring review in the publication’s September 4, 2009 Weekend edition. 1 Inspired at an early age by Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marilyn knew that music would be her life. She formed her first singing group, Nature’s Children, while in junior high school.

  • A Conversation with the Architects of the Philly Sound, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff Scott Paton
Unedited version of Goldmine cover story, Issue #737, Oct. 28, 2008 A conversation with the architects of the Philly Sound, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff Scott Paton A step into the lobby at 309 S. Broadway in Philadelphia is a step back into time. The gilded, gated doors close as the elevator operator punches the button for the second floor. Moments later, the pulleys and cable come to a stop, and the doors open on to a lobby and offices that seem frozen in time, some 30-odd years ago. To the casual observer, a professional makeover might be in order. But to a fan of early-‘60s pop or ‘70s soul music, the surroundings are resplendent in their untouched glory, a virtual shrine to two creative, indelible eras in recorded history. The home of Cameo-Parkway Records from 1956 to 1967, this building drew aspiring songwriters, from near and far, hoping to pitch their tunes to the likes of Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and the Orlons. Among those young hopefuls were poet/lyricist Kenneth Gamble and keyboardist extraordinaire Leon Huff, and while their early attempts to “storm the castle” were often thwarted, they ultimately ascended to become the preeminent writer/producers on the local scene, and the most important force in R&B/Soul music since the heyday of Motown Records. In 1972, they purchased the building for their own enterprise, Philadelphia International Records. As architects of “the Philly Sound”, Gamble & Huff crafted sophisticated funk classics for the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blues, Teddy Pendergrass, the Intruders, Lou Rawls and others that ushered in the Disco Era, setting a standard for dance- friendly, yet lyrical songcraft, that remains unmatched.

  • A Celebration of Women in Jazz!
A celebration of Women in Jazz! Organized by Key of She Jazz and Hosted by The University of the Arts April 27, 2019 12:15 –4:30 p.m. Hi Everyone! Welcome to the first-ever Key of She Jazz Conference 2019 hosted by the University of the Arts! We are so happy you decided to join us today. Today will be an amazing day full of music, education, and connection, and we hope you make the most out of your afternoon as you enjoy different sessions, performances, and more. I started in my jazz “career” in sixth grade when I was first presented the opportunity to be in jazz band at school. Jazz band was different than any other ensemble I had ever played in. Sure, the music was different, but as I looked around, the dynamic of the group was different too. I was only one of three or four girls sitting in an ensemble of about twenty five, and I couldn’t figure out why. As ambitious twelve-year-old girls, a friend and I decided to take action, and we created a girls’ jazz ensemble to support and encourage more girls to be involved in jazz, with the ultimate goal of creating a more equal ratio of girls to boys starting at a middle school level. With the help of our school music director, Dr. Jenny Neff, we formed an all-girls big band composed of girls from the two middle schools in the district, and we started creating music in a different environment. As I got to high school, I expanded the ensemble to include our two high schools in addition to the middle schools to bring together an even larger group of girls.
