Abstract This paper aims to disclose of the development of a Master’s Thesis about one of the one of the most unique military experiences throughout the Peninsular Middle Ages: the militia of «besteiros do conto» (crossbowmen). Created in Portugal in 1299, by King Denis of Portugal (1279-1325), it was formed by elements recruited mainly within the popular group of craftsmen, with preference for those who had previously shown special aptitudes in handling the crossbow.

BOOK REVIEWS AND BOOK NOTICES 279 in the context of war with Poland and Lithuania during which the Teutonic Order is presented as the shield of Christianity and its location on the frontiers of the Christian world is emphasized. The Order’s struggle is described as a continuation of the war with pagans that was started by the Teutonic knights in the 13th Century. In the face of the opposition from the Prussian Federation, the Order once again attempted to present itself as the defender of Christianity. The study demonstrates how Teutonic knights selected elements of their past to make a better impression on the recipients of their letters. For instance, in the correspondence with the city of Lübeck, the Teutonic Order recalls the merchants from Bremen who are said to have been involved in the establishment of the Order. The volume ends with a conclusion by Mathieu Olivier entitled “Mémoire commune des origines ou mémoire des origines communes? The text summarises the achievements of the conference and identifies the areas which require further research. Movement and Mobility in the Medieval Mediterranean The medieval Mediterranean was not a static maritime space. In recent years, studies have focused on Mediterranean dynamics, connections, encounters and entanglements. What approaches do researches from History, Literature, Archaeology, Philology and other disciplines adopt to better understand the complexity of the medieval Mediterranean? How and to what extent did multiple agents, phenomena and factors interact to shape and intertwine the multidimensional spheres of the Mediterranean? We welcome papers from all disciplines that study movement and mobility from different perspectives in and across the medieval Mediterranean and its extensions, both physical and imagined.

The Windows of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, San José, California Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish 325 Willow St. San José, CA 95110 (408) 292-0146 Introduction This document is meant to be, not simply a record and guide to the stained glass windows of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in San José, California, but also an aid to prayer and meditation. Each of the windows portray holy women and men, angels, the Virgin Mary (in various guises), or Our Lord. These images therefore are intended to be sources of inspiration: for imitation as models of christian disciple- ship, as source of humility in the face of God’s awesome goodness, and as focus points for prayerful meditation on the deepest mysteries of God’s love. In all cases the images presented have layers of meaning much deeper than the simple, though glorious, use of beautifully colored light to brightly decorate the interior of the church. Stained glass windows are treasured in Chrisitan art as yet another way to present to the church images meant to illuminate the heart and soul of those open to the light. As with all art and human artifice in general, these windows will, in the end, fall far short of even a significant experience of the greater reality they seek to communicate. They are hampered by the fact that they are works of humans, limited to a time and a place, stuck in a given cul- ture, using a particular style and medium. However if the viewer can be helped to understand some of the “language” of that particular time and culture, the limitations of the The lower, larger windows are numbered from the door to artform and style, then a deeper appreciation can begin to the altar, with Roman numerals (i.e.
