View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by South East Academic Libraries System (SEALS) Exorcising the Past: History, Hauntings and Evil in Neo-Gothic Fiction A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts at Rhodes University by Karlien van der Wielen January 2016 Supervisor: Professor Samantha Naidu Abstract This thesis explores the conventions of both historical and Gothic fiction in order to investigate what seems to be a recurrent impulse to exorcise the past in what I define as contemporary Neo-Gothic fiction. It therefore attempts to establish a distinction between Neo-Gothic fiction and other forms of contemporary Gothic fiction by focusing on the treatment of history, the supernatural and the grand narrative of progress in three contemporary Gothic novels: The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and The Accursed by Joyce Carol Oates. This thesis argues that the most potent manifestation of history can be found in the representation of the revenant in Neo- Gothic fiction, which exhibits a disruptive and evil ontology that problematises the exorcism of the past. Furthermore, the reactions of ‘modern’ characters to these revenants illustrate the imperative to exorcise the past, and therefore the treatment of history and the past is reflected in the interaction between the ‘modern’ characters and the Gothic revenants. Through this interaction as well as the parody of traditional Gothic and historical fiction conventions, Neo- Gothic fiction constructs a critique of the Enlightenment’s grand narrative of progress. Paradoxically, this constitutes Neo-Gothic fiction’s own attempt to exorcise the past, which it recognises in a simplified and reductive narrative of history propounded through the grand narrative of progress. -

A HISTORY OF ZOMBIES Almost everyone is familiar with the modern zombie: a shuffling, ravenous, reanimated corpse that terrorizes and eats humans. But since zombies aren’t real, how did their legend get started? Where did the word “zombie” come from? Zombies Across the World: For thousands of years, zombie-like monsters have appeared in legends and myths all over the world. In the Middle Ages in Europe, many people believed in revenants – ghosts or reanimated bodies that would return from the grave to terrorize the living, sometimes with a specific purpose, like revenge, or to torment someone who had wronged them in life. In Norse mythology, draugr were said to be the reanimated bodies of warriors who had been reborn with amazing abilities, like being able to turn into a wisp of smoke and pass through stone. Draugr were said to drive humans and animals mad and cause chaos everywhere they went. Chinese cultures told of jiangshi, living corpses that had white hair and greenish-white skin, doomed to hop everywhere because of the stiff limbs that had set in after death. Many Asian countries have variations on the jiangshi, including Japan, Vietnam and Korea. One of the earliest known references to the living dead is in The Epic of Gilgamesh, an ancient Mesopotamian epic poem. In it, Ishtar, the goddess of love and war, travels to the underworld and demands to be let in, threatening that she “will bring up the dead to eat the living.” REVENANT YOU TOTALLY JOHN?? Unauthorized use will result in criminal and civil penalties. 1 ARAS Connections Issue 2, 2015 Books, newspapers, TV, websites, radio shows, social networks, and the Center for Disease Control have now managed to alert the entire country to the threat of a possible zombie apocalypse. Instead of creating mass panic, reports of the walking dead have evolved into immeasurably popular sources of entertainment and zombies themselves have displayed an amazing versatility as metaphors for such diverse elements as the evils of racism, consumerism, conformity, and vivisection; the Viet Nam war; social apathy; loss of individuality and identity; fascism; industrial dystopia, ecological disasters; immigration, diseases, plagues, and pandemics; spiritual bankruptcy; and the TEOTWAWKI (what “preppers” call “the end of the world as we know it”). Something about these moaning, brain-dead beings who move in swarms but don’t move right, act right, talk right, eat right, or behave right has captured the collective cultural imagination and generated endless speculation about their condition and the condition of the world in which they lumber.
