LINGUACULTURE 2, 2015 FROM WOODS AND WATER TO THE GRAN BAZAAR: IMAGES OF ROMANIA IN ENGLISH TRAVELOGUES AFTER WWI ANDI SÂSÂIAC Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania Abstract Although globalization brings different countries and cultures in closer and closer contact, people are still sensitive when it comes to aspects such as cultural specificity or ethnicity. The collapse of communism and the extension of the European Union have determined an increase of interest in Romania’s image, both on the part of foreigners and of Romanians themselves. The purpose of this paper is to follow the development of Romania’s image in English travelogues in the last hundred years, its evolution from a land of “woods and water” in the pre-communist era to a “grand bazaar” in the post- communist one, with clear attempts, in recent years, to re-discover a more idyllic picture of the country, one that should encourage ecological tourism. The article is also intended to illustrate the extra-textual (historical, economic, cultural) factors that have impacted, in different ways, on this image evolution. (25), immediately after WWI, Romania remained a subject of interest to the English-speaking world because of its war debts and because it was a member of the Little Entente (also comprising Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia). Both the cultural and political life of Romania and its relations with the Western countries took a rather paradoxical turn after the accomplishment of the long standing ideal of Romanian unity in 1918. -

Reinert (History) COURSE FORMAT The course content and assessment components (discussion forums, examinations) are fully delivered online. COURSE OVERVIEW & GOALS Everyone's heard of “Dracula” and knows who he was (or is!), right? Well ... While it's true that “Dracula” — aka “Vlad III Dracula” and “Vlad the Impaler” — are household words throughout the planet, surprisingly few have any detailed comprehension of his life and times, or comprehend how and why this particular historical figure came to be the most celebrated vampire in history. Throughout this class we'll track those themes, and our guiding aims will be to understand: (1) “what exactly happened” in the course of Dracula's life, and three reigns as prince (voivode) of Wallachia (1448; 1456-62; 1476); (2) how serious historians can (and sometimes cannot!) uncover and interpret the life and career of “The Impaler” on the basis of surviving narratives, documents, pictures, and monuments; (3) how and why contemporaries of Vlad Dracula launched a project of vilifying his character and deeds, in the early decades of the printed book; (4) to what extent Vlad Dracula was known and remembered from the late 15th century down to the 1890s, when Bram Stoker was writing his famous novel ultimately entitled Dracula; (5) how, and with what sources, Stoker constructed his version of Dracula, and why this image became and remains the standard popular notion of Dracula throughout the world; and (6) how Dracula evolved as an icon of 20th century popular culture, particularly in the media of film and the novel. -

Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the mode of the Female Gothic primarily by examining how texts utilize the role of curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge, paying close attention to how female characters employ these attributes. Existing criticism is vital to understanding the Female Gothic and in presenting the genealogy of feminist literary criticism, and yet I argue, this body of criticism often produces elements of essentialism. In an attempt to avoid and expose the biases that essentialism produces, I draw from Sara Ahmed’s theory of queer phenomenology to investigate the connections between the way that women pursue and circulate knowledge through education and reading and writing practices in the Female Gothic. -

Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. Cette étude fait l’analyse d’ouvrages de littérature cyberpunk écrits entre 1981 et 2005, et situe la littérature féminine cyberpunk dans le contexte d’une discussion culturelle plus vaste des questions féministes. Elle établit les origines du genre, analyse les réactions culturelles et, par la suite, donne un aperçu des différentes manières dont la littérature féminine cyberpunk a transformé les usages du genre afin de promouvoir en particulier le point de vue féministe. -

Vampire Cinema, FALL 2018 Instructor: Professor Dragan Kujundzic Walker Hall JST Seminar Room ENG 4133 JST 4936 Office 203 Walker Hall Email: [email protected] The course will be offered in the Fall of 2018, and again as Vampire London in the Summer A, 2019, in London, UK, as a part of the newly organized UF Program Abroad in London : Vampires, werewolves, ghosts and apparitions from Bram Stoker, to Francis Ford Coppola and Anne Rice. The course will address issues of vampire and vEmpire (the imperial politics behind vampirism), vampirism and psychoanalysis, vampirism and modernism, vampirism and cinema, queer, gay and lesbian vampires, vampires of East and Central Europe, vampirism and anti-Semitism, vampirism and religion, vampirism and nationalism, history of blood in religion, film and literature, etc. : The course will discuss the figure of the vampire in cinema and literature (Bram Stoker’s Dracula will be read or screened and analyzed, among others; particular attention will be given to the novel as a proto- cinematic medium), as well as the rendering of the vampire in cinema (from Murnau’s Nosferatu, to Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Roman Polanski’s The Fearless Vampire Slayers Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Twilight among others). The course will introduce students to the classics of vampire cinema as well as to the contemporary production in the genre of vampire films, television series, etc. : Student learning objectives: the students will learn about the rich tradition of vampires in literature and cinema, as this tradition relates to the history of London and the British Empire. -

Teorie jazykového obrazu světa, která je důležitou součástí výzkumného programu etnolingvistiky, je rozšířena ve dvou odlišných variantách, které lze zjednodušeně označit jako varianty „subjektivní“ a „objektivní“. Tyto varianty lze následně usouvztažnit s pojmy vidění světa (anglicky view of the world) a obraz světa (německy das sprachliche Weltbild). Vidění, tj. jistý pohled na svět, je vždy viděním někoho, implikuje dívání se, a tím i vnímající subjekt. Na druhou stranu obraz, i když je také výsledkem vnímání světa určitou osobou, subjekt sám o sobě tak silně neimplikuje; těžiště je v jeho rámci přesunuto na objekt, tedy na to, co je zahrnuto přímo v samotném jazyku. To však neznamená, že bychom v případě konkrétních subjektů mohli hovořit jen o jejich vidění světa, můžeme naopak – sice poněkud zprostředkovaně – hovořit i o jejich obrazu světa, tj. např. o obrazu světa dětí, „prostých“ lidí, úředníků nebo Evropanů. Můžeme dokonce klasifikovat jazykové obrazy světa podle toho, kdo jsou jejich tvůrci a nositelé, jak to navrhuje V. I. Postovalovová.1 Oba pojmy z titulu tohoto článku – úhel pohledu i perspektiva – se tedy vztahují jak k „vidění světa“, tak i k „obrazu světa“. Rekonstrukcí jazykového obrazu světa subjektů určitého kulturního společenství, které bývá označováno tradičním spojením „polský lid“, by měl být v Lublinu připravovaný Słownik ludowych stereotypów językowych [Slovník lidových jazykových stereotypů] (SLSJ, 1980).
