My feeling having cast both Brad and Tom was, basically that in a strange way the world of a vampire is not that different from the world of a massive Hollywood star. You’re kind of kept from the daylight, from the harsh daylight, you live in a strange kind of seclusion. Every time you emerge a tremendous ripple runs through people. The effects these characters had, the way Anne Rice described them in the book was like that. Lestat would enter a room and an invisible stone had dropped into a pool. To me, it was an interesting metaphor. The star is a vampire, the vampire is a star. As well as that, they are eternally youthful, or they’re condemned to be eternally youthful. There was a little dance going on in my mind in that regard as I was making the movie. Literatura. Intertextualidade. Vampirização. Tradução Intersemiótica. ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the translation strategies present in the rereading of American writer Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (1976) for the homonymous screenplay (1994) by Irish director Neil Jordan. Assuming that film language does not replicate the literary language does, since they are different kinds of art, and any comparison between the two from the perspective of hierarchy should be invalidated, we discuss the filmic codes which transformed the verbal content of the Gothic novel in a horror film. Based on the theories of Translation Studies scholars, such as Roman Jakobson (1959) who adopted the term intersemiotic translation or transmutation for the interpretation of verbal signs by means of non-verbal signs systems, Gideon Toury (1995) who focuses his research on the translated work in order to observe the process that leads to the final translated product and Rosemary Arrojo (2003) who deconstructs the idea of stability and authenticity in translation, we examine the impossibility of fidelity in the dislocation of the book to the screen, as we identify a mixture of previous narratives diluted in intertexts which entwine with the creativity of the artists involved in the adaptation. By pointing out stories that resonate, influence and nurture Jordan‘s work, we testify that these multiple source stories are heterogeneous and without a single origin, fact that proves that even the source text is made of a patchwork quilt. Theorists such as Gerárd Genette (2006) who regards intertextuality as the presence of a text in another, Tiphaine Samoyault (2008), who discuss the mosaics of quotations and dialogues that build texts after the track of prior texts and Robert Stam (1979) who extends Genette’s approach to the film universe as he considers adaptation a sort of intertextual branch that besides alluding to the novel on which it was inspired, it also possibly feeds on other texts which came before it, provides us valuable tools for the rendering of our analysis. The action of interpreting or rewriting the Gothic story leads us to relate the act of the translator/filmmaker with the act of the vampire, since the translator “bleeds” on his work as well as “drinks” from different veins in order to give life to his audiovisual product, and the vampire drains and feeds his victim with his supernatural blood to make his prey immortal. To develop the metaphor translation/vampirization, the philosopher Jacques Derrida (2006) and author Cristina Rodrigues (2000) provide us reflections which elucidate the idea of alternating loans or successive supplementations made in the vampire universe, contributions that extend the eternity of the children of the night each generation.

Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

  • Inheritor of a Dying World, We Call Thee to the Living Beauty
Performance and Spirituality Number 1 (2009) “YOU’VE GOT TO GROW OR GO”: INITIATION, PERFORMANCE, AND REALITY TELEVISION JASON WINSLADE Initiation. The chain of Latin roots reaches back to inire (to go into, enter upon). We begin at initium (an entrance, a beginning) and proceed to initiare (to originate, initiate). Our destination is initiatonem (participation in secret rites). In this brief etymology, we get a sense of beginnings, of origins, of starting a particular action or event, a chain of events, of tradition, but with a touch of the mysterious, of secrecy. Yet this secrecy implies both speaking and not speaking, since the term initiation in phonetics refers to one of the two mandatory aspects of sound production in the human body, the other being articulation. Allow me to articulate. In this context, initiation is the action by which airflow is created through the vocal tract. So it is the act of creating speech, a speaking that at once must be silenced when brought into the realm of ritual initiation, where individuals participate in secret rites, beginning their study of the ineffable, whether it be in the religious, esoteric, or communal sphere. To add a further level, the term initiation is also used in chemistry, indicating a chemical reaction that triggers one or more secondary reactions. So an initiation causes a chain reaction. It creates a process. It does something. Further, it does something through speech. It performs. Ideally, initiation also transforms. It allows for a deeper negotiation between the known and the unknown, offering a seemingly privileged view of the universe to the worthy candidate.

Vampires are almost always portrayed as sexual deviants, and the film’s representation of this sexual deviance offers commentary on how certain sexualities are viewed during the time period that the film is made.
