ABSTRACT Médicinal leeches were not found in the West Indies prior to 1822, but by the turn of the century, a large, aggressive leech abounded on Puerto Rico, St Lucia, Martinique and other islands. The authors conclude that this "Caribbean leech", described as Hirudinaria {Poecilobdella) blanchardi Moore, 1901, is a junior synonym of the "buffalo" leech Hirudinaria manillensis (Lesson, 1842), the médicinal leech of India and neighbouring countries of South-East Asia. The final proof of the true identity of this West Indian leech came from comparison of the nucleotide séquences of the cDNAs of the hirudin polypeptide from leeches from St Lucia and from Bangladesh. The authors présent évidence that this leech arrived from ships carrying labourers from colonial India starting in the mid-1840's. Each of thèse ships were required to have leeches on board for médicinal purposes. The statue honoring one of the island’s most famous citizens, Josephine Tascher, the white creole woman who was to become Napoleon’s lover, wife, and empress, is defaced in the most curious and creative of ways. Her head is missing; she has been decapitated. But this is no ordinary defacement: the marble head has been cleanly sawed off—an effort that could not have been executed without the help of machinery and more than one pair of willing hands—and red paint has been dripped from her neck and her gown. The defacement is a beheading, a reenactment of the most visible of revolutionary France’s punitive and socially purifying acts—death by guillotine. The biographical record shows Josephine born of a slaveholding family of declining fortunes, married into the ranks of France’s minor aristocracy, and surviving the social chaos of the French Revolution, which sentenced countless members of the ancien régime to the guillotine. In the form of this statue, she received her comeuppance in twentieth-century Martinique, where she met the fate that she narrowly missed a century earlier. Scratched on the pedestal are the words—painted in red and penned in creole— “Respe ba Matinik. Respe ba 22 Me” [Respect Martinique. Respect May 22]. The date inscribed here of the anniversary of the 1848 slave rebellion that led to the abolition of slavery on Martinique is itself an act of postcolonial reinscription, one that challenges the of‹cial French-authored abolition proclamation of March 31, 1848, and 2 CULTURAL CONUNDRUMS Statue of Josephine in Fort-de-France, Martinique, today. -

In Chapter VI we saw how Archbishop Missouri, and Father Eugene Tisserant, Prefect Apostohc of Haiti, had been forced to abandon their efforts to heal the schism in which nearly all the priests and most of the people in Haiti were B. G. 2, 592 fi. living. Subsequently, the Holy See tried to remedy the situation H. R. H. by working through the Archbishops of Trinidad. Successively 427 ff. Archbishops Smith, Spaccapietra and Etheridge were given juris- diction over the island, but all their efforts to reconcile the schis- matics failed. Their lack of success was in great part reducible to one factor : the three dozen recalcitrant priests who were living ibid., 358 ff. on the island. With few exceptions, they were refugees from ecclesiastical discipline in France, Italy and Spain and they justly feared that the Holy See would put an end to their disorders if it regained control over the Church in Haiti. The history of the Dactyloidae of the eastern Caribbean that we retrace is based on the most recent data publications, in terms of research in molecular systematics, crossed with the data of the geological history of this geographical region of the Eastern Caribbean. -

Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Reading these attempts as examples of decreolization that actually suggest an ongoing and unpredictable recreolization of culture, I situate this apparent paradox within a transoceanic heuristic frame that brings -

JAMES ARNOLD THE EROTICS OF COLONIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY FRENCH WEST INDIAN LITERARY CULTURE The créolité movement has inherited from its antecedents, antillanité and Negritude, a sharply gendered identity. Like them, it is not only masculine but masculinist. Like them, it permits only male talents to emerge within the movement, to carry its seal of approval. And, like them, it pushes literature written by women into the background. This characteristic is not, however, unique to the French West Indies. It can be found, mutatis mutandis, across the Caribbean archipelago with its variations on the "repeating island," in Antonio Benitez-Rojo's (1992:1-29) felicitous expression. In a word, créo- lité is the latest avatar of the masculinist culture of the French West Indies, which is being steadily challenged by the more recently emerged, less theo- retically articulated, womanist culture, to borrow a term from the Anglo- phone West Indies. These two sharply gendered cultural visions are cur- rently in a state of competition and struggle. -

This southern Indian material has not only been used for the national costume but also for domestic purposes and decoration. It is common to see tablecloths and bags made of madras. A house may be decorated with Madras curtains, lamps or dolls. Madras as a symbol for Creole identity has spread to the commercial sectors. Madras colours have been reproduced in advertisements, websites as well as on locally made products such as yogurts or rum. Keywords: Madras, chemise-jupe, douillette, gwan wòb’, French Creole identity Introduction The madras material reached the French Caribbean shores during the seventeenth century. The French women who settled in Guadeloupe and Martinique used madras as a headpiece. In the early twentieth century, most Guadeloupian and Martiniquan women wore a madras headpiece with their Gwan wòb1 and chemise-jupe.2In recent times, Madras has been used for decoration, craft and advertisement. When it comes to gender and age, madras is not only associated with women pertaining to a particular age bracket. In modern times, children and men also wear madras pants and shirts. The name madras has also been given to a drink in Guadeloupe. The purpose of this article is to examine how the city of Madras and the Madrasi immigrants have made a contribution to the French Caribbean heritage. -

Few scholars have, however, examined the functions of isles in the building of Dutch maritime connections. This paper partially fills this void in the literature by looking at the African Islands of Arguin, Gorée, Cape Verde and São Tomé, and highlighting their significance within the seventeenth- century Dutch Atlantic. Using information from the notarial archives of Amsterdam, the collection of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and journals of voyages, we examine the role played by these islands in the formation and operationalization of Dutch commercial circuits in the Atlantic, and emphasize their geo-strategic importance for the achievement of the colonial aspirations and military ambitions of the Dutch Republic and the WIC.
