For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

WRITING HERE1 W.H. NEW n 2003, for the BC Federation of Writers, Susan Musgrave assembled a collection of new fiction and poetry from some fifty-two IBC writers, called The FED Anthology.2 Included in this anthology is a story by Carol Matthews called “Living in ascii,” which begins with a woman recording her husband’s annoyance at whatever he sees as stupidity (noisy traffic and inaccurate grammar, for instance, and the loss of his own words when his computer apparently swallows them). This woman then tells of going to a party, of the shifting (and sometimes divisive) relationships among all the women who were attending, and of the subjects they discussed. These included a rape trial, national survival, men, cliffs, courage, cormorant nests, and endangered species. After reflecting on the etymology of the word “egg” (and its connection with the word “edge”), she then declares her impatience with schisms and losses, and her wish to recover something whole. The story closes this way: “If I were to tell the true story, I would write it not in words but in symbols, [like an] ... ascii printout. It would be very short and very true. It would go like this: moon, woman, woman; man, bird, sun; heart, heart, heart, heart, heart; rock, scissors, paper. The title would be egg. That would be the whole story.”3 This egg is the prologue to my comments here. So is the list of disparate nouns – or only seemingly disparate, in that (by collecting them as she does) the narrator connects them into story. -

PACIFIC SEABIRDS A Publication of the Pacific Seabird Group Volume 44, Number 2 2017 PACIFIC SEABIRD GROUP Dedicated to the Study and Conservation of Pacific Seabirds and Their Environment The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is a society of professional seabird researchers and managers dedicated to the study and conservation of seabirds. PSG was formed in 1972 out of a need for increased communication among academic and government seabird researchers. The principal goals of PSG are to (1) increase the quality and quantity of seabird research through facilitating exchange of information; (2) identify and assess the importance of threats to seabird populations; and (3) provide government agencies and others with expert advice on managing populations of seabirds. PSG is headed by an Executive Council composed of members volunteering their time. Members include biologists, wildlife managers, students, and conservationists from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan and 12 other countries. PSG annual meetings and publications provide forums where members can share their findings on all research topics relating to Pacific seabirds and discuss local and large scale conservation issues. Abstracts for meetings are published on our website. PSG publishes the on-line bulletin Pacific Seabirds (formerly the PSG Bulletin; www.pacificseabirdgroup.org) and the journal Marine Ornithology (www.marineornithology.org). Other publications include symposium volumes and technical reports; these are listed near the back of this issue. PSG is a member of the Ornithological Council and the American Bird Conservancy. Annual dues for membership are $40 (individual); $30 (student, undergraduate and graduate); and $1,200 (Life Membership, payable in five $240 installments). -

TIFF 2019 CELEBRATES INDIGENOUS FILMMAKERS AND THEIR STORIES This year’s lineup showcases Alanis Obomsawin, Zacharias Kunuk, Taika Waititi, Rachel Perkins, Jeff Barnaby, and more TORONTO — The Toronto International Film Festival® is proud to highlight the works of Indigenous filmmakers and artists, from veteran Alanis Obomsawin (Abenaki), who comes to TIFF with the provocative and emotional Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger, to relative newcomer Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Sámi/Blackfoot/Blood), with The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open. “Supporting the voices of Indigenous people through film is a priority for TIFF,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director and Co-Head. “We support the calls by leaders in Indigenous screen storytelling for more films to be made, and for greater narrative sovereignty. We’re inspired by this year’s films that shine a light on Indigenous stories of the present and past, and we’re excited to help bring these vital stories to global audiences.” Obomsawin’s Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger is the Abenaki filmmaker’s 53rd film. Documenting the short life of a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba, born with a rare muscle disorder, the film is an exposé of blatant governmental disregard. Prolific filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk returns to TIFF with One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk, a fictionalized account of an encounter between a respected Inuk elder and a government emissary, who tries to enforce a policy that will mean a fundamental rupture in the lives of Inuit. A post-screening Q&A will be moderated by Jesse Wente, Director of the Indigenous Screen Office. -

GREGORY BETTS is the author of four books of poetry, and the editor of four books of early Canadian experimental writing. His "plunderverse" epic, The Others Raisd in Me (Pedlar Press 2009), was a finalist for the ReLit Award 2010, and he is the 2010 recipient of the International Journal of Canadian Studies's Jean-Michel Lacroix Award for the best article on a Canadian subject. Betts recently completed a literary history of early Canadian avant-gardism. He teaches literature at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. Des critères tels que la représentativité, l’aspect diachronique, ainsi que la pertinence au regard des notions de la voix, du contexte et du genre littéraire, ont guidé la constitution de ce corpus. Ces textes traitent de préoccupations et de thématiques liés à la restauration des récits traditionnels salish dans la contemporanéité et à la proclamation de l’autochtonéité à la face du monde. Les traductions proposées dans ce mémoire sont accompagnées de commentaires sur des aspects touchant à la production, à la réception et à la traduction des œuvres des littératures autochtones, en particulier la littérature ou « art de la parole » (word art) salish/stó:lō, selon l’expression mise de l’avant par Maracle, ainsi qu’au travail de décolonisation que cette dernière accomplit par l’écriture.
