Having read your introduction, and the preface by Penny, I felt moved to write to you. Crass was a group functioning on consensus with the occasional veto thrown in for good measure, so I thought you might be interested in a slightly different view of the proceedings. From the nature of your introduction, I’d say that you have a pretty thorough grounding in certain aspects of the band. I’d like to broaden the context. Things were fine when we started gigging, before we had any status or influence. The main discomfort I felt and still feel about what the band promoted, started when I realised that Thatcher’s sordid right-wing laissez-faire was little different from what we were pushing. It was an unpleasant shock. Neither Thatcher nor we considered the damage done. We concentrated on the ‘plus’ side always. To say that everyone can ‘do it’, and counting it a justification when the talented, the motivated, or the plain privileged responded, while ignoring the majority who couldn’t ‘do it’, and those who got damaged trying, is a poor measure of success. Just as Putin has become the new Tzar of Russia, Crass used the well worn paths to success and influence. We had friends, people with whom we worked and cooperated. -
The IGNORANT TOUR
The IGNORANT TOUR Steve Ignorant – Full band performing CRASS songs Once more Steve will go on tour to perform CRASS songs 1977-1984 and Ignorant Classics with his band: Carol Hodge (vocals & keys), Pete Wilson (lead guitar), Pete Rawlinson (bass guitar) and Jay Bagnall (drums). Steve Ignorant is a singer/songwriter and artist. He co-founded the anarcho-punk band CRASS with Penny Rimbaud in 1977. When CRASS finished he played in various bands and is currently performing with his own band Steve Ignorant’s Slice Of Life. After the huge success of performing CRASS songs & Anarcho Classics at The Last Supper Tour in 2010-11 and high profile gigs with Paranoid Visions (Rockfest, Quebec 2016; Rebellion Fest, UK 2017; Japan 2018; Punk Rock Bowling, USA 2018; Montreal ’77, Canada 2018), Steve will once more go on a World Tour. The political and lyrical ideas of CRASS are even more relevant today as they were then and will be performed with the same intensity of those days. All shows will have visuals (where venues have the facilities) and samples. The entire CRASS Catalogue has been remastered and reissued through One Little Indian this April, which has intensified the interest in CRASS and what it stands for. Steve will be starting his Tour in April/May 2020 in the UK & IRELAND and will then take it to the Continent and the rest of the world. Steve Ignorant will be performing CRASS songs 1977-1984 with some Ignorant Classics with his band: Carol Hodge (vocals and keys) & Pete Wilson (Lead guitar) both played at The Last Supper Tour. -

ANARCHIST CYBERNETICS CONTROL AND COMMUNICATION IN RADICAL LEFT SOCIAL MOVEMENTS Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Thomas Swann MA (University of Glasgow), MA (Radboud University Nijmegen) School of Management University of Leicester September 2015 Thesis Abstract Anarchist Cybernetics Control and Communication in Radical Left Social Movements by Thomas Swann This thesis develops the concept of anarchist cybernetics in an attempt to elaborate an understanding of the participatory and democratic forms of organisation that have characterised radical left-wing social movements in recent years. Bringing together Stafford Beer’s organisational cybernetics and the organisational approaches of both classical and contemporary anarchism, an argument is made for the value of an anarchist cybernetic perspective that goes beyond the managerialism cybernetics has long been associated with. Drawing on theoretical reflection and an empirical strategy of participatory political philosophy, the thesis examines contemporary social movement organisational practices through two lenses: control and communication. Articulating control as self-organisation, in line with cybernetic thought, an argument is made for finding a balance between, on the one hand, strategic identity and cohesion and, on the other, tactical autonomy. While anarchist and radical left activism often privileges individual autonomy, it is suggested here that too much autonomy or tactical flexibility can be as damaging to a social movement organisation as over-centralisation. Turning to communication, the thesis looks at social media, the focus of another kind of hype in recent activism, and identifies both the potentials and the problems of using social media platforms in anarchist and radical left organisation. -

This is an un-peer reviewed and un-copy edited draft of an article submitted to Parasol. Mythopoesis, Scenes and Performance Fictions: Two Case Studies (Crass and Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth) Simon O’Sullivan, Goldsmiths College, London Days were spent in fumes from the copying machine, from the aerosols and inks of the ‘banner production department’ – bed sheets vanished – banners appeared, from the soldering of audio, video, and lighting leads. The place stank. The garden was strewn with the custom made cabinets of the group’s equipment, the black silk- emulsion paint drying on the hessian surfaces. Everything matched. The band logo shone silver from the bullet-proof Crimpeline of the speaker front. Very neat. Very fetching. Peter Wright (quoted in George Berger, The Story of Crass) One thing was central to TOPY, apart from all the tactics and vivid aspects, and that was that beyond all else we desperately wanted to discover and develop a system of practices that would finally enable us and like minded individuals to consciously change our behaviours, erase our negative loops and become focussed and unencumbered with psychological baggage. Genesis P-Orridge, Thee Psychick Bible In this brief article I want to explore two scenes from the late 1970s/1980s: the groups Crass (1977-84) and Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (1981-). Both of these ‘performance fictions’ (as I will call them) had a mythopoetic character (they produced – or fictioned – their own world), perhaps most evident in the emphasis on performance and collective participation. They also involved a focus on self- determination, and, with that, presented a challenge to more dominant fictions and consensual reality more generally.1 1. -

Black Flag White Masks: Anti-Racism and Anarchist Historiography Süreyyya Evren1 Abstract Dominant histories of anarchism rely on a historical framework that ill fits anarchism. Mainstream anarchist historiography is not only blind to non-Western elements of historical anarchism, it also misses the very nature of fin de siècle world radicalism and the contexts in which activists and movements flourished. Instead of being interested in the network of (anarchist) radicalism (worldwide), political historiography has built a linear narrative which begins from a particular geographical and cultural framework, driven by the great ideas of a few father figures and marked by decisive moments that subsequently frame the historical compart- mentalization of the past. Today, colonialism/anti-colonialism and imperialism/anti-imperialism both hold a secondary place in contemporary anarchist studies. This is strange considering the importance of these issues in world political history. And the neglect allows us to speculate on the ways in which the priorities might change if Eurocentric anarchist histories were challenged. This piece aims to discuss Eurocentrism imposed upon the anarchist past in the form of histories of anarchism. What would be the consequences of one such attempt, and how can we reimagine the anarchist past after such a critique? Introduction Black Flag White Masks refers to the famous Frantz Fanon book, Black Skin White Masks, a classic in anti-colonial studies, and it also refers to hidden racial issues in the history of the black flag (i.e., anarchism). Could there be hidden ethnic hierarchies in the main logic of anarchism's histories? The huge difference between the anarchist past and the histories of anarchism creates the gap here. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract American environmentalism became a recognizable social move- ment in the 1960s. In the following two decades the movement evolved to represent a diverse set of philosophies and developed new protest methods. In the early 1990s law enforcement and govern- ment offi cials in America, with support from extraction industries, created an image of the radical environmental movement as danger- ous “eco-terrorists.” Th e concept was deployed in an eff ort to de-val- ue the environmental movement’s position at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. With the concept in place members of the movement became easier to detain and the public easier to deter through political repression. Th e concept of “eco-terrorism” enters popular media relatively quickly indicated by the proliferation of superhero comics in the ear- ly 1990s that present villainous environmental activists as “eco-ter- rorists.” Th is imagery contrasts comics from 1970 which depicted superheroes as working alongside activists for the betterment of the world. -

The Feminization of Earth First! Ms Magazine, May 1992 It is impossible to live in the redwood region of Northern CaMornia without being profoundly affected by the destruction of this once magnificent ecosys- tem. Miles and miles of clearcuts cover our bleeding hillsides. Ancient forests are being strip-logged to pay off corporate junk bonds. And bee-lines of log trucks fill our roads, heading to the sawmills with loads ranging from 1,000-year old redwoods, one tree trunk filling an entire logging truck, to six-inch diameter baby trees that are chipped for pulp. Less than 5% of the old growth redwood is left, and the ecosystem is disappearing even faster than the more widely known tropical rainforest. So it is not surprising that I, a lifetime activist, would become an environmentalist. What is surpris- ing is that I, a feminist, single mother and blue-collar worker, would end up in Earth Firstl, a "no compro- mise" direct action group with the reputation of being macho, beer-drinking eco-dudes. Little did I know that by combining the more feminine elements of col- lectivism and non-violence with the spunk and outra- geousness of Earth First!, we would spark a mass movement. And little did I know that I would pay for our success by being bombed and nearly killed, and subjected to a campaign of hatred and misogyny. I was attracted to Earth Firstl because they were the only ones willing to put their bodies in front of the TIMBER WARS The Feminization of Earth First! bulldozers and chainsaws to save the trees. -

Mainstream conservation efforts were viewed by many environmentalists as having failed from compromise inspiring the birth of radicalized groups. This eventually transformed conservationists into radicals. Green Peace inspired radical environmentalism by civil disobedience, media campaigns and direct action tactics, but remained mainstream. Earth First’s! philosophy is based on a no compromise approach. -

Book Review Symposium James C. Scott, Two Cheers for Anarchism: Six Easy Pieces on Autonomy, Dignity, and Meaningful Work and Play, Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2012. ISBN: 9780691155296 (cloth); ISBN: 9780691161037 (paper) Anarchism is a highly contested political philosophy. Jesse Cohn and Shawn Wilbur (2003: 4) write, “[a]narchist history is a terrain occupied by materialists and mystics, communists and mutualists, nihilists and scientists, progressivists and primitivists alike”. To be sure, many who have claimed the mantle of ‘anarchist’ have missed the point completely, mistaking it for and using it to legitimise all manner of absurd, violent, and exploitative behaviours. Contra a wealth of misreadings, misunderstandings, and deliberate acts of deceit by its detractors, anarchism proper means a society based on mutual aid and mass democratic participation characterised by the absence of domination of human beings over other human beings. If only it were so simple! Anyone who has spent their time in a ‘Temporary Autonomous Zone’ or an anarchist influenced Social Centre will have been confronted with a dizzying number of anarchisms: the proponents of many arguing ‘my anarchism is better than your anarchism’1. For a political idea that values open critical debate this is no bad thing (although some comrades should practice more humility in their debating skills). In my experience as an urban activist of the anarchist sort, individuals fall in and out various anarchisms, never becoming a disciple of one for any great length of time.
