"Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella": A study of art and Aboriginality in south east Australia 1900-1980 Sylvia Kleinert A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University, April 1994. xiv A note on the title The title of my thesis, "Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella" is a well-known south eastern Aboriginal song. As in any folk tradition, the origins of the song are obscure and wording varies according to time, place and performer. My title follows the version sung in 1961 by Alick Jackomos, a lifelong supporter of Victorian Aborigines and recorded by Alan West, then a curator at the Museum of Victoria. Some performers, including Percy Mumbulla from the south coast and Alick Jackomos attribute the song to the Wallaga Lake community, others, like the Aboriginal singer, Jimmy Little, and the ethnographer, Anna Vroland, favour Lake Tyers. In 1968 Percy Mumbulla claimed Jacky Jacky was a corroboree song taught to him by Sam Drew (Bubela) however the Lake Tyers informants cited by Vroland attribute the English verses to Captain Newman, manager of Lake Tyers station in 1928- 1931 : they maintain the chorus refers to the arrival of steamer traffic between Bairnsdale and Orbost at the turn of the century. The tune, in all cases, resembles the Liverpool song, "Johnny Todd". The song thus selectively incorporates from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal traditions. Most particularly, "Jacky Jacky" encapsulates the way that south eastern Aborigines accommodated a colonial presence by parodying, and thereby gaining some control over, existing stereotypes. Through this inversion, humour becomes a tactical weapon in a song of political protest played back to the majority culture. -

KJV) 'One Blood': John Fraser and the Origins of the Aborigines In 1892 Dr John Fraser (1834-1904), a schoolteacher from Maitland, New South Wales, published An Australian Language, a work commissioned by the government of New South Wales for display in Chicago at the World's Columbian Exposition (1893). 1 Fraser's edition was just one of a range of exhibits selected to represent the products, industries and native cultures of the colony to the eyes of the world.2 But it was much more than a showpiece or a simple re-printing of the collected works of Lancelot Threlkeld (1788-1859), the 1 John Fraser, ed. -

RH Mathews and anthropological warfare: on writing the biography of a ‘self-contained man’ Martin Thomas Introduction: the biographical lacuna It is now almost three decades since AP Elkin published in Oceania a three-part article titled ‘RH Mathews: his contribution to Aboriginal studies’.1 Recently I have been pur- suing my own research into Mathews, gathering material for a book that Elkin, had he found the time, might well have written: a biographical study of the surveyor-turned- anthropologist. To use a term that Mathews once employed for extracting information from informants, I have found it a process of ‘long & patient hammering’.2 Although Mathews’ anthropological career, which lasted from the early 1890s until his death in 1918, gives him presence in a wealth of documentary records, he remains a difficult quarry for the biographer. The problems I have encountered in coming to grips with his life history are due in part to his extreme reticence in all matters personal. In the words of his son William, RH Mathews was a ‘self-contained man’.3 In that regard he substantiates a sage obser- vation on the part of Claude Lévi-Strauss — that a calling to anthropology allows an individual in ‘an initial state of detachment’ to find advantage when approaching dif- ferent societies ‘since he is already halfway towards them’.4 In his own society Mathews was probably long inured to a degree of personal and intellectual isolation, though it was undoubtedly exacerbated by his exceedingly hostile relations with other members of the small anthropological fraternity in Federation-era Australia. -
John Mathew and His Aboriginal Informants
Research and friendship: John Mathew and his Aboriginal informants Malcolm D. Prentis Between 1879 and 1928, John Mathew (1849-1929) published two books and over 20 articles on aspects of Aboriginal culture, society and languages. In that period he grad ually developed some repute as an ethnographer, linguist and student of Aboriginal society. He has generally been included in subsequent lists of pioneers of Aboriginal ethnography in the period from the 1880s to the 1920s. This was the transitional phase between the 'mere collectors' like R. Brough Smyth and E.M. Curr and the organised, systematic, academically-based professional researchers from the 1920s onwards. His tories of Australian anthropology which list the pioneers of the discipline still usually give the names A.W. Howitt, Lorimer Fison, W.E. Roth, W.Baldwin Spencer and F.J.Gil len, R.H. Mathews and John Mathew.1 These men foreshadowed the professionalisation of the discipline. Some, such as Spencer and Mathew, actively promoted it. As largely spare-time and self-trained in the field, their work was necessarily less systematic than that of their full-time professional successors. Theories 'shaped their field studies' and they 'took a critical and constructive part in [the] formulation' of theory. They were motivated by a number of factors: the 'before it's too late' notion of preservation, curi osity, specific interest in confirming theories or ideologies about human nature and evo lution.2 The reputation of Spencer and Gillen has survived better than the others, for scholarly as well as political reasons. John Mathew shared many of these characteristics. -

Aboriginal Sites
Aboriginal Sites 19 Aboriginal Sites There are an unknown number of traditional Aboriginal cultural heritage sites across the Border Rivers and Gwydir catchments. These sites are in different environmental zones and reflect a great variety of land uses and forms of interaction with the environment. It is probable that all areas of the Border Rivers and Gwydir catchments were occupied by Aboriginal people at some stage in the past. Therefore, Aboriginal sites may be found in any location. Most sites are a reflection of the available food and shelter in the area where they are located, and of the geology and landforms of that area. Some of the Aboriginal sites that can be found across the catchment include: • burials (dhanmurr) / skeletal remains • open camp sites (maraay) / fire hearths • isolated stone (maayama) artefacts and stone artefact scatters • middens containing shells (waa), bones (buya), organic material • scarred trees, both ceremonially carved and for tools and weapons • quarry sites for stone (maayama) and ochre • rock overhangs, shelters, and camp sites (maraay) • axe grinding grooves • stone fish traps (badi) • painted and engraved rock art • ceremonial sites, earth ring bora grounds and stone (maayama) arrangements • cultural sites / dreaming sites of significance 20 Burials Warning: This Chapter contains information regarding Aboriginal burial practices. The insert showing some of the rock art is modified from 1896 published scale drawing by R.H. Mathews. The figure was 9ft (2.75m) high. The white patch on the stomach is visible in exact centre of photograph. Although a Darkiñung site, this deity-like figure is now claimed by other Aboriginal people from the NE to the NW.* Photograph by Geoff Ford Sunday 17 September 2006 Notes: On the back wall of this rock shelter is an Aboriginal art figure pre-dating arrival of the settlers, referred to as The Milbrodale Man (from the locality). The site is on a farm where David Moore from The Australian Museum carried out an archaeological excavation (1969, 1970). I have become familiar with the property in consultation with the owners to whom I was introduced by a past resident of Milbrodale (Joan Robinson - on steps in photograph). Since the ‘large and lofty trees’ (reported by Mathews 1893 p.355 to be in front of cave) had been cleared, exposing the cave, the bottom of the back wall has lost pigment so the legs in the present day are only seen reaching the size of the prominent penis. -
