Although classified as critically endangered, Paakantyi is undergoing an active process of renewal, with a number of initiatives underway. There is, however, an acknowledged need for more accessible resources to support teachers and learners in their language renewal efforts, the available language materials at the time that this project was undertaken being either too technical or not adequately comprehensive to be used for teaching and learning purposes (Butcher, M & Lindsay, R 2011, pers. comm., 14 June). In addition, the orthographical conventions used for Paakantyi have been revised since the publication of Luise Hercus’ 1982 grammar The Bāgandji language and a text using the new system of orthography is therefore required. Community demand, combined with the substantial language documentation and grammatical analysis that has been done, makes Paakantyi an ideal target for a learner’s grammar, the creation of which is the focus of this project. This essay will give an overview of the linguistic situation in Australia and more specifically, of the historical and current situation for Paakantyi. Following this, the planning stages and creation process of the Paakantyi learner’s grammar will be discussed and finally, concluding remarks made. Note that all the examples in this essay taken from Hercus’ 1982 grammar and the 2002 CD-ROM (Wiimpatya Palku = Paakantyi language) have been adapted to the orthography used in the learner’s grammar. 1.2 Indigenous LAnguages in Australia The colonisation of Australia has had a devastating impact on Indigenous languages.     The founding of Aboriginal History and the forming of Aboriginal history Bain Attwood Nearly 40 years ago an important historical project was launched at The Australian National University (ANU). It came to be called Aboriginal history. It was the name of both a periodical and a historiographical movement. In this article I seek to provide a comprehensive account of the founding of the former and to trace something of the formation of the latter.1 Aboriginal history first began to be formed in the closing months of 1975 when a small group of historically-minded white scholars at ANU agreed to found what they described as a journal of Aboriginal History. At that time, the term, let alone the concept of Aboriginal history, was a novel one. The planners of this academic journal seem to have been among the first to use the phrase in its discursive sense when they suggested that it ‘should serve as a publications outlet in the field of Aboriginal history’.2 Significantly, the term was adopted in the public realm at much the same time. The reports of the Committee of Inquiry on Museums and National Collections (the Pigott Report) and the Planning Committee on the Gallery of Aboriginal Australia, which were the outcome of an inquiry commissioned by the Whitlam Labor Government in order to articulate and give expression to a new Australian nationalism by championing a past that was indigenous to the Australian continent, both used the term.3 As 1 I wish to thank Niel Gunson, Bob Reece and James Urry for allowing me to view some of their personal

Language centres: keeping language strong Anna Ash, Pauline Hooler, Gary Williams and Ken Walker1 Abstract We begin by describing the history and main activities of Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative and Many Rivers Aboriginal Language Centre. Comments from Elders, language teachers and researchers are included to reflect the opinions of a diverse range of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. We discuss some aspects of research, publishing, language education and information technology. Finally we make some recommendations for groups who are just starting out on this challenging but rewarding road. This volume was at least partially inspired by The green book of language revitalization in practice. There is a chapter in that book called ‘Diversity in Local Language Maintenance and Restoration: A Reason for Optimism’. It emphasises that there is a positive future for the revitalisation of Aboriginal languages: There is reason for optimism because local language communities all over the world are taking it upon themselves to act on behalf of their imperilled linguistic traditions in full understanding of, and in spite of, the realistic perception that the cards are stacked against them. There is, in effect an international movement in which local communities work in defiance of the forces pitted against their embattled languages. It has something of the character of a modern miracle, if you think about it – while they share the goal of promoting a local language, these groups are essentially independent of one another, coming together sometimes to compare notes, but operating in effective separation. The event of dancing is witnessed to by a watercolour by Lieutenant William Bradley, ‘View in Broken Bay New South Wales March 1788’, which is reproduced by Clendinnen as both a plate and a dustcover.4 By ‘The Australians’ Clendinnen means the Aboriginal pop- ulation. But, of course, Aboriginality is not an Aboriginal concept but an Imperial one. As Sonja Kurtzer writes: ‘The concept of Aboriginality did not even exist before the coming of the European’.5 And as for the terra nullius to which the British came, it was always a legal fiction. All this taken in, one sees why Clendinnen calls the First People ‘The Australians’, leaving most of those with the current passport very much Second People. But: winner has taken, almost, all. The Eddie Mabo case6 exploded terra nullius, but most of the ‘nobody’s land’ now still belongs to the Second People.

Resource overview Introduction to NAIDOC Week – A history of protest and celebration NAIDOC Week is usually celebrated in the first full week of July. It’s a week to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of First Nations people. Although NAIDOC Week falls in the mid-year school holidays, the aim of each theme isn’t limited to those set dates. Schools are encouraged to recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week at any time throughout the year to ensure this important event isn’t overlooked. Themes can be incorporated as part of school life and the school curriculum. NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’, the committee responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week. Its acronym has now become the name of the week. NAIDOC Week has a long history beginning with the human rights movement for First Nations Peoples in the 1920s.

Macintosh, University of Sydney (Figs. 1-9) (Plates XIX-XXVII) Manuscript received 20.9.61 PREVIOUS LITERATURE The rock engravings in the main gallery, and the paintings in the" Big Cave", have been described briefly, and some of the main carvings and paintings illustrated, by Pulleine (1926), Riddell (1928), Barrett (1929 and 1943), Davidson (1936), Black (1943 and 1949), and McCarthy (1957 and 1958). Pulleine's claim (op. cit. 80) that he recorded all of the motifs at Mootwingee is far from being the case. These papers indicated that Mootwingee was an important comparative site on the eastern extremity of the full intaglio pecking technique, and a complete recording was therefore decided upon.
