be held in beautiful Montreal from June 10 to 13. Suicide has a terrible toll on most, if not all, societies around the world. Although we have made significant progress over the last decades in our understanding of risk factors for suicide, as well as in intervention and prevention strategies, much has yet to be learned and remains to be done. The 2013 IASR World Congress is the first of its kind. It is the first meeting of the International Academy for Suicide Research (IASR), organized by the Quebec Suicide Research Network (RQRS), in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and in collaboration with the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) and the Fédération Trauma Suicide Liaison Urgence (TSLU). This meeting will provide an inspiring forum for high level discussions on suicide research, suicide prevention and intervention. The theme of the congress is Suicide: From research to practice. We are planning a number of timely and stimulating plenary sessions to discuss

Methods: An observational (cross-sectional) study was conducted among 166 sentinel GPs within France (a non- gatekeeping country) between 2013 and 2017 for all GP’s patients who attempted suicide. Measurements: frequency of patients 1) managed by the GP at the time of the SA, 2) addressed to an emergency department (ED), 3) without care at the time of the SA, and 4) managed by the GP after the SA and factors associated with GP management at the time of and after the SA. Results: Three hundred twenty-one SAs were reported, of which N = 95 (29.6%) were managed by the GP at the time of the SA, N = (70.5%) were referred to an ED, and N = (27.4%) remained at home. Forty-eight (14.9%) patients did not receive any care at the time of the SA and 178 (55.4%) were managed directly by an ED. GPs were more likely to be involved in management of the patient at the time of the SA if they were younger (39.2% for patients < 34 years old; 22.9% for those 35 to 54 years old, and 30.3% for those more than 55 years old p = 0.02) or the SA involved a firearm or self-cutting (51.9%) versus those involving drugs (23.7%); p = 0.006).

Review by Clare Crowston, University of Illinois From the spectacular collective suicide of the six “martyrs of Prairial” to a nineteen-year-old Breton villager who hanged himself after his father’s death, the act of suicide tells us as much about the society and culture in which it takes place as about the unique circumstances of the individual who undertakes it. This is the central argument of Dominique Godineau’s fascinating book, S’abréger les jours: Le suicide en France au XVIIIe siècle. Godineau will be extremely familiar to readers of H-France from her pioneering work on the history of women and gender and in particular for her 1988 Citoyennes tricoteuses. Les Femmes du peuple à Paris. In Citoyennes tricoteuses, Godineau displayed her passionate interest in the history of ordinary women and men and her gift for evoking the mental and material world of working people with its monotonous toil and exuberant moments of leisure, its fears and hopes, hatreds and love, and its sometimes shocking violence in word and action. Publication of the book in English in 1998, as The Women of Paris and their French Revolution, was a godsend to students and instructors of the revolutionary period.[1] Many of the thematic, methodological and, epistemological concerns at the heart of Citoyennes tricoteuses reappear in this volume.

Jones Copyright by Lisa Shugert Bevevino 2012 Abstract This dissertation traces the literary and cultural implications of the representation of suicide and despair in courtly literature from medieval France. The study begins with an introduction to the scholarly work already done on literary texts and is followed by a historical introduction to the problem of suicide and despair in medieval society. Scenes of suicide and despair fall into five main categories: the martyr trope, the desire for union outside the constraints of mortal life, the erotic, the way to truly express the value of life, and the apprehension of death, and they function together to show pieces of the individual personality of each character as well as to highlight societal and cultural problems that would lead a character to despair. Despair and suicide were both grave sins according to the Church in the Middle Ages, yet authors make no obvious commentary or explicit judgment against their despairing or suicidal characters. They do judge them for other sins and transgressions, so this dissertation seeks to examine how the authors do view their characters and what that implies about societal reactions to their problems.

Writing Verdicts: French And Francophone Narratives Of Race And Racism Abstract Inspired by Didier Eribon's La société comme verdict, this dissertation examines how the novelistic representation of racism and racialization in French-language texts can push back against a collective social verdict in France that stigmatizes non-white peoples as lesser and as other. Though discussing the existence of race is still taboo in France, I show that this stigmatization is in fact a racial verdict, or one that operates through racialization, as opposed to a verdict predicated on sexuality, gender, or class. To do so, I analyze the representation of racial hierarchies and the experience of racism in six novels written in French: Daniel Biyaoula's L'Impasse, Gisèle Pineau's L'Exil selon Julia, Leïla Sebbar's Le Chinois vert d'Afrique, Zahia Rahmani's "Musulman" roman, Cyril Bedel's Sale nègre, and Bessora's 53 cm. As I argue, these authors resist racial verdicts by writing about and examining the place of the ethnic minority individual in French society. In so doing they also issue counter verdicts that condemn society, individuals, and the state for their complicity in maintaining an unjust status quo.
