Writing Verdicts: French And Francophone Narratives Of Race And Racism Abstract Inspired by Didier Eribon's La société comme verdict, this dissertation examines how the novelistic representation of racism and racialization in French-language texts can push back against a collective social verdict in France that stigmatizes non-white peoples as lesser and as other. Though discussing the existence of race is still taboo in France, I show that this stigmatization is in fact a racial verdict, or one that operates through racialization, as opposed to a verdict predicated on sexuality, gender, or class. To do so, I analyze the representation of racial hierarchies and the experience of racism in six novels written in French: Daniel Biyaoula's L'Impasse, Gisèle Pineau's L'Exil selon Julia, Leïla Sebbar's Le Chinois vert d'Afrique, Zahia Rahmani's "Musulman" roman, Cyril Bedel's Sale nègre, and Bessora's 53 cm. As I argue, these authors resist racial verdicts by writing about and examining the place of the ethnic minority individual in French society. In so doing they also issue counter verdicts that condemn society, individuals, and the state for their complicity in maintaining an unjust status quo. I first demonstrate that the racial hierarchies introduced during the colonial era to justify the exploitation and domination of non-white peoples continue to mark French society, operating as a collective societal verdict that marks those perceived as "colored" according to the sign of stigma. This judgment is first and foremost tied to phenotype–the inescapable physical body–but also includes fluid markers like religion, speech, dress and culture. Second, I examine this racial verdict through three lenses–"blackness," "arabness," and "whiteness"–interrogating both how the authors present its impact on society and individuals–, thus proving its very existence–and how they refute it. Once exposed, verdict is countered through the rehabilitation of stigmatized identities such as blackness, the indictment of the impulse to categorize individuals based on race, the condemnation of the French state for its exclusion of its own citizens, and the revelation that whiteness–the source of the racial hierarchy–is both colored and founded on emptiness. First of all, it shows that the presence of Arabic men and women in France long predates contemporary struggles over immigration, Islam, and French and European cultural identity. Coller uncovers the history of a largely forgotten Arab-speaking population in France. He follows the lives of a socially and geographically diverse set of immigrants, most of whom set sail from Egypt with the remnants of Napoleon’s Grande Armée in 1801; his story ends with the July Monarchy and the conquest of Algeria in the early 1830s. But Arab France makes contributions beyond calling attention to the history of this population. One is to consider the relevance of an unusual group for thinking about the dynamics of community formation. A second, and perhaps more important, contribution is to challenge simplistic understandings of Orientalism and imperialism. In this optic, he pays particular attention to the trajectories--literal and figurative-of individual Arab intellectuals in France. A third significant goal is to chart not only the “making” but also the “unmaking” of an Arab-French community and to explain its disappearance.

The plot unfolds as the three lawyers and defendant grapple with the evidence of the case and their own feelings about race. Mamet has said that the "theme is race and the lies we tell each other on the subject." History RACE premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on November 16, 2009 in previews, officially on December 6, 2009, closing on August 21, 2010 after 297 performances and 23 previews. Directed by Mamet, the cast included James Spader, David Alan Grier, Kerry Washington, and Richard Thomas. Scenic design was by Is the law Santo Loquasto, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt and Black costume design by Tom Broecker. David Alan Grier was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a & Featured Actor in a Play. White? The producers announced on April 21, 2010 that the play had recouped its investment, making it the first new play to recoup on Broadway in the 2009-2010 season. Performance Dates Friday, October 3 @ 8 p.m. The play has been produced in US regional theatres, such Saturday, October 4 @ 8 p.m. as at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 2012 and Next Act in Milwaukee in 2014. Though a number of different political parties submitted proposals, then-Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s centre-right coalition led this initiative and pushed for measures that would have the effect of generally restricting eligibility for French citizenship. In particular, the government proposed to modify the process by which children born in France to immigrant parents could gain French citizenship. These reforms had come in the wake of a massive influx of immigrants in the second half of the twentieth century, many of whom came from North Africa but also elsewhere. As a new generation of young French men and women of immigrant heritage was coming of age, many in France began to raise questions about their inherent “Frenchness” and therefore place in French society and entitlement to nationality. According to proponents of the proposed amendments, by replacing the automatic right to citizenship through birth on French soil with an active process of application, these measures would ensure that only those expressing a desire to become French would receive citizenship.

Coller has written a superb study of a group of people unduly forgotten by historians and pretty much everybody else, too. This is the history of several hundred Middle Eastern exiles who followed the last members of Napoleon’s Grande Armée from Egypt to France in 1801, and who--joined by some additional emigrants arriving later--established themselves in Marseille, Melun and Paris. Coller collectively dubs this amorphous community “Arab France.” The choice of title signals the centrality of identity and geography to his project. Chronologically, the book’s narrative is sandwiched between Napoleon’s failed 1798 invasion of Egypt, which launched France’s modern interest in the Arab world, and the more successful French colonization of Algeria in 1830, which solidified France’s geopolitical interest in North Africa. The study ends in 1831 because Coller argues that the conquest of Algeria signaled the death-knell of Arab France, in the sense of any true accommodation between those two identities (and spaces). A discussion of Coller’s work ought to begin by noting some of its connections with the present. Indeed, Coller opens his preface with a remembrance of two French teenagers with distinctly Arab names who were killed in a Paris suburb during a 2005 police chase.

Media, Identities, and Immigrants: Arab Satellite Television in Italy Zala Volčič* SAŽETAK The field of global media has recently seen the publication of several books on the relationship between the media, belonging, and migrants. This research focuses on the complex cultural positioning of communities, who, for a variety of reasons, move to a new country and inhabit the new culture. This article first maps some theoretical and empirical investigations on the issues of immi- grants, and their use of the media. Furthermore, the specific context of the Arab media revolution within and outside Arab countries is presented, and I particularly focus on Al-Jazeera satellite television and an imaginary it offers. I explore, through ethnographic research and in-depth interviews, the use and consumption of Al-Jazeera satellite television by young Arab Muslim immi- grants who meet at the Islamic Cultural Institute of Milan, Italy. I argue that Al-Jazeera represents an original media project which tries to break free from direct control of Arab governments to the media - despite the financial support it continues to receive from the Emir of Qatar. However, the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding the experience of watching independent news chan- nels should not always be seen in the light of a common desire to identify and unite within the notion of umma.
