Box 189, Bourg, Lou,,fana 70343 Abstract. - The diverse life history stages, abundance, and wide distributio> over a variety of habitats are attributes that expose blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) to nuinerous predators. An extensive literature search was undertaken on food habits of marine and estuarin,· invertebrate, and vertebrate species to identify predators of blue crab zoea, megalopae, and juveni k/adults. Ninety three species, which included invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals, were documented to prey upon blue crabs. An additional l l 9 sp~cies had other crab species or brachyur:m remains in their stomach contents. More fish species were identified as blue crab predators than any other taxonomic group (67), and 60 fish species were documented to prey upon unidentified crabs and/or brachyurans. -

Zoological Studies 33(1): 44-64. A total of 42 species belonging to 9 genera and 2 subfamilies of the family Muraenidae are indigenous to Taiwan. The 12 species: Enchelycore bikiniensis, Gymnothorax brunneus, G. javanicus, G_ margaritophorus, G. melatremus, G. nudivomer, G. reevesii, G. zonipectis, Strophidon sathete, Uropterygius macrocephalus, U. micropterus, and U. tigrinus are first reported in this paper. The 7 species: Enchelycore lichenosa, E. schismatorhynchus, Gymnothorax buroensis, G. hepaticus, G. meleagris, G. richardsoni and Siderea thyrsoidea whose Taiwan existence was doubted or lacked specimens in the past are also recorded. Additionly, many species misidentifications or improper use of junior synonyms in previously literature stand corrected in this paper. Two previously recorded species Gymnothorax monostigmus and G. polyuranodon are, lacking Taiwan specimens, excluded. Color photographs, dentition patterns, synopsis, key, diagnosis, and remarks for all 42 species are provided in this paper. Key words: Moray eels, Fish taxonomy, Fish fauna, Anguilliformes. Anterior nostril tubular, near tip of snout; posterior nostril above or before eye, a simple pore or in a tube. Mouth large, gape usually extending behind poste- rior margin of eye, lips without flanges. Teeth numerous and strong, with smooth or serrate margins, ranging from blunt rounded molars to long, slender, sharply pointed, and sometimes depressible canines;jaws short to elongate, usually about equal. On upper jaw, intermaxillary (anterior) teeth in 1 or 2 peripheral rows and usu- ally a median row of 1 to 3 teeth which are the longest in the mouth (sometimes missing in large specimens); maxillary (lateral) teeth in 1 or 2 rows on side of jaws;vomerine teeth (on roof of mouth) usually short and small, in 1 or 2 rows or in a patch, or sometimes absent. Dentary (lower jaw) teeth in 1 or more rows; in many species in the subfamily Muraeninae the first 4 teeth are larger, sometimes forming a short inner row. Gill opening a small round hole or slit at midside. Dorsal and anal fins variously developed, from long fins with dorsal fin usually beginning on head and anal fin immediately behind anus (subfamily Muraeninae), to both fins re- stricted to tail tip (subfamily Uropterygiinae); dorsal and anal fins continuous with caudal fin around tail tip; pectoral and pelvic fins absent. -

Green Moray Eel Gymnothorax funebris Size This species is one of the largest morays, with a maximum recorded size of 8 feet (2.4 m) and 65 pounds (29 kg). Habitat The green moray eel is a solitary animal who frequently hides in cracks and crevices. In cooler waters, north of the Caribbean, green moray eels and are commonly found around seawalls and rock pilings. In warmer tropical waters, they can be found in coral reefs, mangroves, and tidal creeks. Distribution The green moray is found in the western Atlantic Ocean from New Jersey to Bermuda and the north- ern Gulf of Mexico southward to Brazil. Diet/Feeding The green moray eel feeds mostly at night on fish, crab, shrimp, octopus, and squid. His strong sense of smell is helpful in detecting his prey. In order to hide from predators and to stalk prey, the eel will hide in holes in the rocks. The eel has a slimy mucus layer which helps it to slip into these holes while protecting his skin. Conservation The green moray is common throughout much of its range. As with all marine life, their future survival is de- pendent on the health of the oceans. #DidYouKnow: When you see the eel opening and closing its mouth, you may think he is threatening you, but he’s actually just breathing by opening and clos- ing his mouth to force water over the gills. Cleaner shrimp and gobies help the moray eel by eating parasites, bacteria, and dead skin off the eel’s body. They might even going inside the eel’s mouth to clean!
