oxford world’s classics THE FIRST EMPEROR Sima Qian’s Historical Records (Shiji), from which this selection is taken, is the most famous Chinese historical work, which not only established a pattern for later Chinese historical writing, but was also much admired for its literary qualities, not only in China, but also in Japan, where it became available as early as the eighth cen- tury ad. The work is vast and complex, and to appreciate its nature it is necessary to make a selection of passages concerning a particu- lar period. To this end the short-lived Qin Dynasty, which unified China in the late third century bc, has been chosen for this transla- tion as a key historical period which well illustrates Sima’s method. Sima himself lived from 145 bc to about 86 bc. He inherited the post of Grand Historiographer from his father, and was so deter- mined to complete his work that he suffered the penalty of castra- tion rather than the more honourable alternative of death when he fell foul of the Emperor. Raymond Dawson was an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. He was Editor of The Legacy of China (1964) and his other publications include The Chinese Chameleon: An Analysis of European Conceptions of Chinese Civilization (1967), Imperial China (1972), The Chinese Experience (1978), Confucius (1982), A New Introduction to Classical Chinese (1984), and the Analects (Oxford World’s Classics, 1993). Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University, 2 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Title: 論邵雍之觀物法 Abstract: Shao Yong’s “Inner Chapters on Observing Things” develops a method for understanding the unity of heaven and man, tracing the decline of civilization from antiquity, and determining how the present can return to the ideal socio-political order of antiquity. Shao’s method is based on dividing any topic into fours aspects (for example, four Classics, four seasons, four kinds of rulers, etc.) and generating the systematic relations between these four member sets. List of translations into English of the Shiji of Sima Qian (Ssu-ma Ch’ien) and the “Letter to Ren An” The numbered list below includes the translations into English known to me of the 130 chapters of the Shiji by Sima Qian (or, Ssu-ma Ch’ien; 145-c. 90 BCE) and of Sima Qian’s “Letter to Ren An,” which is chapter 62 of the Han Shu written by Ban Gu (32-92 CE). Please send additions and corrections to this list to me at [email protected] In the numbered list, for each of the 130 chapters of the Shiji and then the “Letter” (listed last), the translations known to me are listed in order of the date of publication. The abbreviations of the publications cited are given below, preceding the numbered list. The series of volumes edited by William Nienhauser (see the titles listed under WN in the abbreviations below) aims to translate the entire Shiji into English with scholarly annotation. Nienhauser gives a brief history of the translation of the Shiji in volume 1 of 1994 (see below, WN 1, pp. xv-xvii). The first translation into a Western language of the Shiji with scholarly annotation was into French by Édouard Chavannes, who published the first forty-seven chapters in five volumes, Les Mémoires historiques de Se-ma Ts’ien (Paris: Ernest Leroux, 1895- 1905, reprint edition, Paris: Adrien Maisonneuve, 1969). The reprint edition also included a supplementary sixth volume with translations of chapters 48-52 by Paul Demiéville and a bibliography by Timoteus Pokora of translations of chapters 48-130 of the Shiji into “English, Russian, French, German, and occasionally other European languages.” Abbreviations of Publications Cited, in Order of Date of Publication These abbreviations are used to indicate the translations of Sima Qian, Shiji into English that appear in the numbered list below. -
The Old Master
INTRODUCTION Four main characteristics distinguish this book from other translations of Laozi. First, the base of my translation is the oldest existing edition of Laozi. It was excavated in 1973 from a tomb located in Mawangdui, the city of Changsha, Hunan Province of China, and is usually referred to as Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi because it is the older of the two texts of Laozi unearthed from it.1 Two facts prove that the text was written before 202 bce, when the first emperor of the Han dynasty began to rule over the entire China: it does not follow the naming taboo of the Han dynasty;2 its handwriting style is close to the seal script that was prevalent in the Qin dynasty (221–206 bce). Second, I have incorporated the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents, disentombed in 1993 in Jishan District’s tomb complex in the village of Guodian, near the city of Jingmen, Hubei Province of China. These documents include three bundles of bamboo slips written in the Chu script and contain passages related to the extant Laozi.3 Third, I have made extensive use of old commentaries on Laozi to provide the most comprehensive interpretations possible of each passage. Finally, I have examined myriad Chinese classic texts that are closely associated with the formation of Laozi, such as Zhuangzi, Lüshi Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lü), Han Feizi, and Huainanzi, to understand the intellectual and historical context of Laozi’s ideas. In addition to these characteristics, this book introduces several new interpretations of Laozi. -

In the Han Dynasty, the subject of birds and the Han Fu achieved a perfect combination, forming a unique style of the Han Fu. This unique style is manifested in profound cultural accumulation, profound ideological connotation and distinctive artistic achievements. Bird Fu can be greatly developed in the Han Dynasty. On the one hand, it is related to the prosperity of Fu style literature. On the other hand, the unified and stable social environment of the Han Dynasty, the preference of the rulers for Fu, the frequent banquet activities and the interaction between writers Influence has a very important driving effect. The bird poetry of the Han Dynasty showed rich ideological connotation through the ways of embedding Taoism into things, borrowing things to chanting virtue, and entrusting things to express their will. 1. Introduction As early as the “Book of Songs” in the pre-Qin Dynasty, “birds” have entered literary works as a literary image. By the time of the Han Dynasty, the subject of birds had already entered the vision of fu masters, for example, when Jia Yi lived in Changsha, Wang Taifu wrote “Fu on the Birds.
