It shows on the one side that agricultural research and higher education institutions have played a key role in the development and institutionalization of genetics in France, whereas university biologists remained reluctant to accept this approach on heredity.

Cependant, une étude plus précise de sa biographie fait apparaître une personnalité originale qui se démarque de la communauté scientifique française de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Deux points en particulier de sa biographie peuvent être avancés pour soutenir ce point de vue. Le premier repose sur l’attitude de Louis Blaringhem par rapport aux débats sur l’hérédité ranimés après la redécouverte des lois de Mendel en 1900. D’abord distant par rapport aux partisans de la génétique naissante, Blaringhem infléchit sa position et sera l’un des premiers à enseigner la génétique mendélienne en France.
