President’s report 2014-15 It is with great pleasure that I recognise the Terrigal Matcham Club Junior Annual Report.

What a great season!

After overcoming the usual pre-season challenges of getting on the park in October we have finished the season with 5 semi- finalists, one minor premiership, 3 grand finalists and two premierships.

At the end of the day, over 180 kids have had the chance to play the wonderful sport of cricket from Milo through to the under 17s an increase on last year’s numbers which is the greatest measure of how successful we are as a club.

Congratulations to Jamie Alpen U13B and Myron Chatman U17B and their teams and supporters for taking out premierships in their respective age divisions. The fact that no one player in either team featured heavily in the Player of the Year Awards goes to show what an amazing team effort both results are.

The other team I would like congratulate is the U11A Maroon side who took on the challenge of playing up a division when the association forced our hand at late notice into registering two A sides. I know Jason, Troy and Gamal did a great job with this side and their attitude in confronting the challenge will hold the kids in good stead in the future.

The club cannot run without a dedicated team of volunteers. First of all I’d like to thank the committee who have enabled the club to function smoothly. A special thanks to Kaye Kelly in her final year as Secretary. I’m not sure how we will function without her in the role and her ability to get things done coupled with her cheerful demeanour. Veteran treasurer Len Bombas continues to amaze, Dave Giltinan has been heavily involved in ensuring our gear and the man cave at Duffy’s is organised and attending delegates meetings, Katrina Porter for recording and registering all players and battling with the mycricket system and Misha Charrett, Greg Hollins, Paul Peters, Sue Toohey and Jason Ashton for all your numerous efforts. A big thanks to John Toohey for putting together this professional looking year book.

I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Paul Mills for his coaching assistance to the majority of our sides and the newsletters which were so well received.

Congratulations and thanks must go to our coaches who dedicate their summer Saturdays to making sure the kids have the best possible opportunity, to our managers who keep things ticking along, scorers, score recorders and everyone who helps the team-a big thank you! But most of all to our young players, all of whom have represented Terrigal Matcham with pride and professionalism- thank you for participating, I hope you have enjoyed your season and that you will return next year.

I attended the seniors presentation recently and it was great to see a generation of young players not long out of the junior ranks doing so well. We will continue to play our part in producing players who love the game and wish to continue on into Terrigal Matcham seniors regardless of ability. I know our small part in the framework of cricket in this country is recognised and this why our national teams are so successful. Michael Clarke and Meg Lanning both started in junior clubs like ours.

I would also like to add my thanks to our sponsors Peter Steele at Mitre10 Kincumber and Ken Pearson and the staff at Breakers - for their continued and valued support. Please continue to support them.

I hope all the players have an enjoyable off season with their winter sports and activities. We look forward to seeing you all again next season.

Yours in cricket Steve Dignam

Grand Final Reports U13A’s Semi Final After the completion of the competition rounds we were placed third on the ladder. In second spot and our opponents for the first semi final is Northern Power. We played each other twice throughout the season with one win each so this final was going to be a good match. The match was reduced to 40 overs a side as a result of some wet weather.

We won the toss and elected to bat first, Darcy (13) and Lochie (20) getting us off to a pretty good start with a 38 run stand before Lochie was dismissed. Jack Heuston (17) and Ethan (7) put on a good partnership and Sam chipped in with 12 including a huge six but it was very tough going with Northern Power bowling well and a slow outfield not helping us. We managed to get our score to 100 after the 40 overs, not a big score but we were just hoping it would be enough. One thing we did know was that we had a very good bowling attack and that all our boys are great fielders.

Northern Power seemed very happy chasing 100 but not for long. Wickets to Mitch (2/8) and Cam (1/6) in their first over and a second to Mitch in his third over has them 3/8 off 6 overs. All of a sudden 100 seems a long way away for Northern Power. The wickets continue to tumble with Jack Dudney picking up 1/5, Harry 3/17, Ethan 1/3 and Hayden 2/4. Lochie bagged two catches and a stumping in what was the best bowling and performance from our guys all year. The catching was outstanding as was the field placements from Jack and Jamal. A brilliant team effort in the field and Northern Power all out for 73.

Final We knew this was going to be a tough assignment as The Entrance are a strong team who only had the one loss all year. They had some very good players but so did we and we also felt that on our day we were the better bowling team. The toss was won by The Entrance and they elected to bat first. Our bowlers started very well. Early wickets saw The Entrance 1/3 then 2/3 then 3/38. We were looking good until a couple of pretty good players put on an 84 run partnership which really got their score ticking over. To their credit our bowlers kept charging in and at the end of the 50 overs The Entrance had scored a very healthy score for a final 5/162.

After the break the boys were upbeat and looking forward to the challenge. Darcy and Lochie opened but unfortunately in the second over Darcy retired hurt. As hard as all the boys tried we just couldn’t build any substantial partnerships and we lost wickets a bit too regularly. Our boys tried hard right down to our last batsman Darcy who returned to the crease to continue his innings, a brave effort from Darcy who showed us all what it means to be in a team. Unfortunately we could only manage 117 runs. Credit to The Entrance, they deserved their premiership but our boys can certainly hold their heads high after an excellent season with many highlights and some outstanding personal performances. The team was very well captained by Jack with support from vice- Jamal and lots of help and support from all the parents, well done to all.

U13B’s Gold - Premiers

Semi Final We finally shrugged off the Narara Wyoming White hoodoo, (they were the only team to defeat us – twice in fact), by winning our semi-final without losing a . We restricted NWW to just 32 runs with some tremendous bowling and fielding and with our openers, Bailey Hilton (23no) and Nathan Ella (6no), chasing down the runs in only seven overs. Bailey and Nathan also performed very well with the ball picking up two wickets each for just one and two runs respectively. In the field the team was exceptional with stand- out efforts from Chet Robinson who took a couple of KFC highlight reel catches and Nathan, who on top of his batting and bowling brilliance, produced a Maxwell style .

Final The lads came into the final with some solid recent performances. Kincumber Red finished third on the ladder but they overcame Terrigal Maroon in the semi’s, a very strong side full of cricketing talent so we knew we needed to be right on our game. In winning the toss we fielded first against KR and after a sluggish start we began to take wickets at regular intervals with the help of some tight bowling and great catching to have KR at 7 for 70 after their 25 overs. Rory Gallagher-Smith and Chet Robinson took a couple of screamers in the field and Hayden Hansen bowled beautifully finishing with 2 for 2. Bailey and Nathan opened the batting again and put together an opening partnership of 32 runs to lay a very solid foundation. Bailey batted in his typically assertive way to compile a quick fire 26 in a great finals knock. Chet Robinson (20no) and Alex Heazlewood (13no) combined magnificently to produce an unbeaten partnership of 35 runs to get the team home with eight wickets still in the shed and more than five overs remaining. The boys are without doubt deserved premiers having been the best team during the regular season and in the finals. Well done fellas! Gold might have a lot of individual talent but what makes them so strong is that they combine very well to create an awesome team.

U17B’s – Premiers Another season’s over and what an extraordinary one it’s been! At the beginning of the season it was like two separate teams had come together with a relatively new coach, always believing we were good enough to beat anyone, even though in the season we made it extremely hard for ourselves to beat anyone. Our ability to hold belief in ourselves and play to our potential at the right times, we were able to pull off two amazing wins in the semi-final and of course the final, to give ourselves the prize we all deserved.

Credit to all the boys for hanging in there when half of us couldn’t get a run to save ourselves, or deliver a ball on the pitch at least once in an over, we managed to work hard through this period and come out as better cricketers through dedication to reaching our personal best. It was a fantastic year and always looking forward to the next.

Huge thanks to Myron for putting up with us throughout the year and giving us those sensational speeches that majority of the time made us laugh, to Andy and his ability to send fear through the boys with his awesome feedback from sideline and at training, to Anne with all her perfect scoring every week, to Graham for all your help with everything especially umpiring, to Kaye and all the parents for topping off a premiership winning season. #Bellbirds #YTB #Birt

UNDER 9’S It was our first year together as a team, with all the players new to the game. We had three 6 year olds ,two 7 year olds and one 8 year old playing under 9 cricket which is a huge achievement in itself. The boys and girl had a steep learning curve at first, learning how to bowl without throwing it, where to field and how to run between wickets (which still is a work in progress for such a young side!).

The boys and girl learnt quickly and from week to week and improvement in all disciplines of the game was evident. Our bowling and fielding was a highlight throughout the year as these two disciplines kept us in most matches as we went along with less and less shots given away each week.

Batting technique and running between wickets was a bit more challenging for the team throughout the season .We tended to not make enough runs (ie forgetting to run!)which was quite funny at times as you can imagine for such a young team, but like all things by the last game we were running and calling which was great.

We had quite a few good matches through the year ,winning a couple of games throughout which were all played with great sportsmanship and a whole lot of fun. Whether winning or losing all the team tried their best each and every match and if they can combine their experience gained from this year and their enthusiasm for the game each player should develop into a handy cricketer.

A big thanks for the parents for bringing the players to games each week and for helping me out when required.A special thankyou to Gavin Rudrum for his assistance with scoring and umpiring each week.

Mitchell King: Was the only 8 year old in the team. So understood the game a little better than his teammates which was a big help.He was probably the most technical and fastest bowler in our team. He was also a strong fielder and an improving batter each time he padded up. Our leading wicket taker.

Flynn Rudrum: Started out being a very keen batsman who developed a love for bowling the longer the season went. He was a good fielder who enjoyed being a part of the team and always listened to advice. A student of the game.

Will Conroy: Had a great attitude for the game. He approved steadily throughout the year especially as a batter. He always tried his best at all disciplines. He will be a much better player for the experience of this year.

Zac Meier: Was the youngest member in our team and played the game with a great maturity for his age. He was equally adept at batting and bowling doing both very well. Occasionally Zac had lapses in the field as the birds flying overhead were far more interesting. Our highest run scorer.

Charlie Martin: Along with Zac Charlie was the character of our team. He would be our usual opening batsman who always laid a solid platform for us. Charlie also turned out to be a strong and improving bowler who also had great hands in the field.

Emily Humphreys: Was a very polite and cooperative young girl, who played wherever required without complaint. Easily our most consistent player who excelled in all areas of batting, bowling and fielding. She has a great future in the game.

In conclusion we had a great year as a team together, learning and enjoying the great game of cricket. Hope to see all players again next season.

Shane King

UNDER 11’S U11 A’s Gold

Aiden Page: Very good bowler who used the large plastic seam better than anyone. Bowled multiple kids due to the ball jagging off the pitch. Aiden broke his leg towards the end of the season and was sorely missed come finals time.

Angus Porter: Golden gloves behind the stumps! Took several great catches and saved us many byes when he was keeping. On the odd occasion he missed gloved it he threw the stumps down more times than I can remember. A very handy middle order batsmen when some fast runs were required.

Austin Haba: "Little Sachin" I call him. Best batsmen I saw in the competition this year. Great competitor and always gives 100% can't ask for any more than that as a coach ! Keep an eye on this kids future.

Darcy Harris: Great left arm bowler and only batter in our team to hit a 6 this year ! Took a couple of awesome reflex catches this year. And always with a smile.

Flynn Peters: Opened the batting for us at the business end of the season and did a great job. Very sound defensive technique and don't bowl at his pads because he's one of the best hookers I've seen. Flynn also bowls some great out swingers so make sure you've got a slip in place!

Joel Evans: Started the season bowling off the wrong foot and couldn't hit a cross bat shot. Finished the year with a Brett lee run up with serious pace and hit some amazing 4's on either side of the park. One of our most improved for sure.

Josh Lyons: Great competitor in all facets of the game. Equal leading wicket taker for the season and became one of our most reliable batsmen. I would also give him shot of the season, hitting a cover drive for 4 to win us the game with 2 balls to spare!

Lucy Peters: Usually always managed to get us a wicket every time she bowled with her loopy in swinging Yorkers. Super fast runner and put the boys to shame with her running between wickets.

Talon Stolz: Think he was foxing for most improved award right from the start of the season. Started off slow and come home like a steam train. Ended up one of the highest wicket takers in our team and most accurate. Most "cruisey" kid I've ever met and a pleasure to coach.

U11 A’s Maroon A great year for our under 11a maroon boys this year, the year started off with our core 7 from last years 9's team, due to large numbers in our age group our team was nominated to play in the A's, was always going to be a tough task but with the addition of Nick Toohey and Jack Kelly the boys were very competitive in the top grade and after a slow start ended the season with a very creditable 7 wins and some very narrow losses, finishing about 8th on the ladder. A big thankyou to Troy, Gamal and Jason who all trained the boys during the year, as well as umpiring every week.

Player summaries. Nick TOOHEY: an amazing player and great kid to boot, he came into the side not knowing anyone and looking set for a long year of losses, to nick's credit he made friends very easy and all the boys loved playing with him, he is a gifted cricketer and was our sole rep player from our team. Nick is a great allrounder and is going to be a cricketer of the future, an outstanding talent, he is currently leading the run scoring in the 11A's with one game to go with 321 at an average of over 40, his is also outstanding taking 7 wickets during the year at an average of 16.

Campbell CROSSFIELD: Campbell is the youngest in the team and a very talented fast bowler, our equal leading wicket taker with a game remaining with 8 wickets at an average of 14, had a great knock with the bat in our last game smashing 10 runs off 4 balls and nearly winning us the game. Will be very dangerous in 11A's next year.

Darcy PEARSON: Our quickest fielder, got round the ground like Usain Bolt cutting off numerous boundaries, he also excelled with the ball, slower deliveries but tricky for opposing batsmen, equal leading wicket taker with 8 at an average of 24. Tough year with the bat for Darcy but he always loved padding up, highlight was a great 9 early in the season.

Casey PEARCE: A very chirpy all-rounder who led our sledges against opposing teams, Casey never lacks confidence and was always grabbing the new ball off our coaches to bowl first, he is a good opening bowler and he too took 8 wickets this season at an average of 18, casey was also very handy with the bat and scored 138 runs at an average of nearly 14, Casey also completed a couple of great run outs this year and he was very dangerous with his outstanding fielding, well done caso.

Jordan MCDONALD: A talented all round cricketer, great leg spin bowler who bowled without much luck this season, 4 wickets in total, Jordy was our second top run scorer and he is a great batter, highlighted by a superb 25 in his last game this season, Jordy scored 146 runs this season. Jordy was also a very good keeper, taking numerous catches behind the stumps as well as stumpings. Another to watch in 11A's next year.

Mitch ELLA: A real fighter Mitch who is an absolute cricket tragic, all Mitch's extra hours he puts in with his dad and brother at Paul Oval definitely improved his cricket, again, a very good all-rounder who was comfortable with both bat and ball in his hand. Mitch took 6 wickets this year at an average of around 20, he also scored 97 runs and was a fourth highest run scorer, Mitch is a bit younger and he will be a star next year in the 11A's.

Jack KELLY: Jack is older and his experience was invaluable, a lethal fast bowler and a very aggressive batsman. Jack would wind up with the bat and give opposing bowlers a huge fright with his power hitting. Jack took 5 wickets this year and has scored 87 runs with the bat with one game to go.

Zayd STRIK: Another who is eligible for the 11's next year and he acquitted himself well in the top grade this year, a very deceiving slower bowler who towards the end of the year bowled consistent well and was a threat to every batsman, Zayd has 7 wickets at an average of 22, with the bat Zayd had great defence and for opposing teams he was always hard to remove, Zayd has scored 37 runs this year.

Reece RUDD: A pleasure to deal with young Reece, a quiet kid who lets his cricket do the talking, again another who went really well playing in the top grade, Reece scored 50 runs this Page 11

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season year, Reece was also very hard to remove and he shared in some quality partnerships this year holding up one end whilst we chased down scores with wickets tumbling around him, a real rock with the bat, Reece was also a handy bowler who took 4 wickets this year, Reece’s dad is also becoming famous for his end of season cricket bbq's and all dad's and kids love playing in teams associated with troy and Reece, Troy is a true gentleman and I see this is where Reece gets his generous traits from.

All in all a great year, thanks to all the parents who were always their week in week out supporting the boys and of course to all the boys who put in both at training and on the weekends in the matches, looking forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Yours in cricket Geoff, Troy, Jason and Gamal.

U11 Gold (Central) It was such a pleasure to be a part of this team for the 2014/15 cricket season and I cannot speak highly enough of the commitment this team showed both at training and on the field. Despite our results not always going in our favour throughout the season each and every member of the 11 gold proudly took the field with the idea of having fun and participating equally no matter what the result.

We started the year with 9 players however by January we had been reduced to 7 due to a number of players leaving the area. Despite this we had a good mixture of boys and girls with various experience in our team. As the season progressed it was obvious that each of the players had improved and had become more involved in the game with bat and ball.

One of the greatest aspects of this team was the wonderful support from each of parents. 11 gold parents were simply brilliant. They not only supported their child but the team as a whole and this made coaching so enjoyable.

Special thanks must go to Ross Hansen as the manager of the team. Ross kept the players and parents updated with information from the club and games each week and taking charge when not available for training or games.

Now to our team: Owen Allen: Owen really showed great improvement with the bat scoring his highest score for the Bellbirds against Southern Spirit. With some further training and practice Owen’s keeping skills will improve, and it was great to see his bowling dramatically improve near the end of the season.

Jade Day: Jade was one of our strike bowlers regularly taking the new ball and more often than not would take a wicket in her first over. Jade always had a smile on her face and would listen to instructions. Now batting is not Jade’s strong point, but that will come with a little bit more technique and confidence.

Annika Hansen: Annika has it all. Annika will succeed in most sports that she does but without doubt cricket comes naturally to her. Athletic in the field and fearless with the bat and always willing to take on role as a leader when the team needs it makes her an asset to any team.

Stephanie Hansen: Steph had her first year in cricket and wonderful addition she was to the team. She was always full of life and always laughing with a smile bigger than Luna Park. A bit timid at first, Steph soon become more confident with bowling and took some crucial wickets during the year, and also did her part in hanging around with the bat as long as she could.

Mitchell Nix: Mitchell is full on with almost anything he does and shows great confidence with the bat and ball and has a great throwing arm. Mitchell regularly put his hand up to open the batting and on his day could score plenty of runs for the team.

Kane Woods: Kane was the great improver this year especially when we look at this first game to his last. I’m proud to say that Kane was one of our best bowlers especially during the second half of the year, and it was good to see his batting getting better. Smell the chicken Kane.

Nicholas Vane-Tempest: Nicholas loves his cricket and had showed great promise with the ball especially. Another kid that just loves his cricket so much and will no doubt be playing for a number of years.

Ethan and Kai Badger: Unfortunately both boys were unable to continue with the team due to relocation from the Central Coast. The boys started their first season in our team and soon showed a lot of promise. I hope I get this right (they are twins)

Page 14

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season but Kai became a great batter and Ethan developed into a great bowler and it was obvious that they worked hard at training and home to become better. They were for a short time one of the great success stories of the team.

It has been an absolute pleasure to coach this team and the club and their parents should be proud of their achievements. See you all next year.

U11 Black

Harrison Booker (Captain) - Batsman of the year Coaches highlight: Consecutive 20 not outs scored in quick time, best team batting of the year. Also when captain you led by example and were thinking about the field and game situation – out team captain for the year.

Tips for next year: Be careful for the first few balls of your innings and protect your stumps. Bowling there is still a little bit of a throw in your action but much better than at the start of the year. Fielding is good – you catch well – just take care to watch the game and back up behind the stumps when throws come in.

Thx Haz – been a pleasure to watch you play.

Cooper Lord - Catch of the year Coaches highlight: Took the first wicket of the year, first batsman to retire after ten overs, batted whole innings once after retiring and everyone else got out, great catch in the second last game.

Tips for next year: Stand up nice and straight on when bowling. Batting – nice loud and early calls and back up – don’t be afraid to take runs. When you start playing with LBW law you will need to know where your stumps are and make sure you hit the ball in defense. You have been very hard to get out Cooper so keep that up.

Thx Coops – it was really great to see you take that catch in the last game and a joy to have your happy, smiling face in the team.

Angus Hunter - Biggest shot of the year. Coaches highlights: SIX --- Shot of the year!! Also close to a hat-trick with two wickets in a row and a memorable innings of 17 to save the team one innings. But most of all the joy of celebrating team success – watching you run around like a crazy chicken when a wicket fell always made me smile.

Tips for next year: Choose a run-up when bowling and stick to it – you are naturally a good accurate bowler and if more consistent in your run-up – that will get better. Batting – remember where your stumps are and keep in the same spot each ball – you can drift around where you stand and don’t know where the wicket is. Fielding – Green Knees !! get down to the ball when it comes to you – and while you are alert and keen to back up try to stay behind the stumps to stop overthrows – not run up to them.

Angus – it has been great to watch you play and I hope you carry on in the future because you could be a pretty good bowler – and an explosive batsman – the James Faulkner of the 11 Blacks !!!

Harry Harper - Most reliable batsmen Coaches highlight: Batting – you batted every innings Harry which I was amazed to see. Always reliable to keep the innings going in a collapse and you played a lot of critical innings during the year – you bat well under pressure. Bowling – 2-10 – it was always exciting to watch you bowl as your accuracy is good and something was always going to happen – while there were a lot of runs – that’s what happens when you bowl straight so I think you did pretty well.

Tips for next year: Bowling – try to pick out a run-up and stick to it – not

Page 17

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season sure you need the really long run-up? Keep your arm nice and high so you don’t bowl round arm and don’t be too worried by getting hit for runs – if you are on the pitch you will get wickets and this year you got as many as everyone else – well done. Batting – I think you bat pretty well so keep working on the strokes. I know I have been into you about running between wickets – run hard, back up, call loud and early and please Harry - slide your bat – I had to give you out a few times when you would have been safe if you had slid the bat! Fielding – great keeping – though you will have to get closer to the stumps next year. In the field – and when batting – keep watching the game – a lot of the time you switch off mentally before the play is over – stay alert for overthrows and misfields.

Thx for playing Harry and good luck next year – I reckon with time and practice you will become a very valuable batsman.

Jay Wylie Cull - The X factor Coaches highlight: Hitting big straight drives down the ground and consistently scoring runs. Always unpredictable whether bowling, batting, fielding or training – some great stuff mixed up with some not so great – which is why you win the X factor – keeping us on our toes!

Tips for next year: Bowling – don’t try to bowl too fast – when you do you start bowling round arm and lots of wides – just try to hit the batsman on the foot every ball! Batting – you have a great eye and will score lots of runs – just remember you are in a partnership when batting and need to call loud and clear and take your runs. Fielding – Stay alert – you can drift off and not watch the game so remember to come in with the bowler and back up.

Jay – I hope you keep on playing - good luck next year

Matthew Crawley - Sportsman of the year For always treating your teammates, coaches and opposition with respect, listening and learning and playing to the rules.

Coaches highlight: Running between wickets – especially with Tom it was always exciting to watch you guys running and calling with brave and fearless pursuit of runs. Straight drives – a couple of drives after we discussed keeping a straight bat made me very proud. Walking when given not out – mark of a true sportsman.

Tips for next year: Bowling – keep it up – you have become a good bowler – keep a nice high arm action and a consistent runup and you’ll get better Batting – keep listening and learning – you’ve got a good eye and will keep getting better as a batsman. Think about calling louder – sometimes you can be timid and not want to call – it’s your job to call the runs so just yell it out. Also have confidence with your shot – often you were caught popping balls in the air when you were unsure or half-hearted playing your shot. Fielding – Keep it up ..

Matt – just keep doing what you are doing – listening, learning and improving and you will become a really good player

Riley Steanes - Ball of the year Coaches highlight: One wicket for the year but was it a cracker? Yes it was – pretty much like Shane Warne’s ball of the century – it drifted out and spun back sharply to clip the top of leg stump. The batsman had not been out that year and was shell shocked. Add to that some great innings – best of which was a 20 not out with Haz with lots of ours and a couple of fine off-side shots.

Tips for next year: Bowling – don’t bowl – I’m kidding – as Paul Mills said you have a natural gift for leg spin – but it simply is the hardest skill to master in cricket so to get any good at it you simply have to practice and bowl lots and lots of balls. Batting – keep it up – you are a natural batsman with all the shots and will score a lot of runs – maybe have a think about how you were getting out – a lot of big swings to good balls early in your innings. The run outs – just run hard and call Page 18

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season early – remember you have to run to get runs so don’t rely on fours. Fielding – a good effort, especially behind the stumps where I think you were a reliable keeper – keep backing up in the field and throwing yourself around – well done.

Riley - it’s a real pleasure to coach you – thx for playing and good luck next year.

Peter Scholes: Bowler of the year Coaches highlight: As the season progressed you became our strike bowler and had some great days in the field – well done. Also a couple of good innings – and a highlight was when you got close to 20 with one over to go and I told you could either keep batting the way you were and remain not out – or go for the 20 – and the next ball you were out trying to smash a six – good decision for mine and fine end to a cracking innings.

Tips for next year: Bowling – keep it up – try not to overthink the process and just try to hit the top of offstump with every ball and your natural pace and swing will make you a really good bowler. Save the offspin and slower balls for beach cricket! Batting – keep at it – I’d suggest you think about choosing the right balls to defend and to hit – often you were out trying to smash good balls on the stumps. Fielding – Ever alert and enthusiastic. But … I was surprised to see only two catches to your name – you often fielded in a hot spot but a lot of dropped catches from memory – so maybe more work on catching.

Peter – I enjoyed meeting you and coaching you - you certainly are an ideas man and a thinker so always challenging – you are a talented bowler and I hope you keep up cricket in amongst all your other activities.

Tommy Ward: Best running between wickets Coaches highlights: Running between wickets. Tom you were the best in the team running between wickets – always a good judge of a run, ran hard and fast and fearless, plus clear loud calls when it was your job to – well done.

Tips for next year: Bowling – try to get a consistent run-up and stick to it – you can bowl fast and often didn’t. Your bowling figures don’t reflect how I thought you bowled but figures don’t lie – you will have to be more consistent to get the results. Batting – remember where your stumps are – you drifted around a bit when facing and were bowled a few times because of this. Fielding – stay alert in the field and remember to back up.

Tommy – love you mate – see you at home.

U11 Maroon (South) We had a good mix of new and existing players this year and it was fantastic the way they all immediately gelled. They had a great season and it was pleasing to see the improvement in all throughout the year. They played the game in the right spirit at all times. While the first few weeks were a bit daunting for the boys, especially when batting, they soon got the hang of things.

Big thanks to the parents for all their support throughout the year. Special thanks to Graham, Pat and Frank for their help at training and to Jerry and Graham for helping out with the umpiring. Lastly thanks to our scorers who are often the forgotten ones - Lenise, Moyna and Pat.

Ethan Cohen: First time cricketer who improved throughout the season. Really got the hang of bowling towards the end which made him a much more consistent bowler. Highlight of the season was scoring 2 runs on the final ball of the game to win the game by 1 run. A pleasure to coach.

Matt Stirgess: Played with a lovely straight bat and was always difficult to get out. At one stage had arguably the longest run up in u11's on the Central Coast!! However when he shortened it his rhythm and accuracy improved and was successful in getting a number of good wickets.

Tom Conroy: Another first time cricketer. Courageous batter who was hit a number times by some of the quicker bowlers. However he refused to back away and continued to get in behind each ball. Was very difficult to get out and once he develops a few more scoring shots will be a more complete batter. His bowling really improved throughout the season and was always full of encouragement for his team mates. A great team player.

Malachi Smith: Great first season and was one of the most improved players. Was always a consistent bowler but really gained confidence with his batting towards the end of the season that saw him retire a number of times. Very enthusiastic in the field

Blaine McIntosh: One of our best bowlers. Bowled quickly and with great accuracy and was unlucky not to end up with more wickets. Lost a bit of form mid-season with his batting but got that back in the last game when well on the way to retiring before being run out by his batting partner (thanks Matt T!). Was strong in the field and got a number of run outs with direct hits.

Max Hodgson: Continues to improve each season. Had a great year with the bat and was an excellent runner between wickets. Bowled really well at times, especially towards the end of the season. Loved his wicket keeping and rarely let anything through which allowed us to do away with the back stop.

Joel Attard: Very courageous with the bat. A left hand batter with a good technique who will continue to improve. Has smoothed out his bowling run up which saw him improve his consistency and increase his pace. An excellent wicket keeper.

Joel Hickey: Huge improvements in his bowling throughout the season as well as other key areas such as his fielding, backing up and running between wickets. Was a strong batsman who could really club a ball when he got set. Unfortunately his season was brought to a halt when he broke his arm with a few games to go.

Page 21

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

Oliver Martin: Loved batting later on in the order when quick runs were needed. Really got the knack of backing up at the non-strikers end which helped him steal a number of quick singles. As the season progressed he really improved his bowling accuracy and by the end was generating some good pace.

Matt Toohey: A big improver this season. After a few inaccurate weeks to start out with he really found his rhythm and was a fast and accurate bowler. Played with a nice straight bat and got a good roll on in the second half of the season. Very strong arm in the field.

Coaches Award: Matt Stirgess Very tough decision to make as I could have easily given this award to any of the boys in the team. Matt always had a smile on his face, was happy to take on board everything suggested to him by his coaches. Was always encouraging his team mates in the field and really played the game in the right spirit. What clinched it for me was straight after being smashed for 6, he went over to the batsman and congratulated him on a good shot.

U11 White

This season saw the Under 9 Maroon team from last year (JJ, Jack, Gilbert, Haydon, Dominic, and Mitch) step up to the Under 11s, combining with three new faces (Angus, Cameron, and Parker). It was a first year introduction for all involved to real scoring and actual pitches. The boys relished the challenge, even though in the spirit of cricket not everything went as planned. Overall we won as many matches as we lost, with all but a few games reasonably competitive.

Most of the year was spent trying to master the basics of cricket in a competitive arena. During the year the boys gradually learnt the art of defending and attacking, with an obvious preference for the latter. Bowling proved a challenge at first, particularly with a few narrower pitches, but by the end of the season the number of wides and no-balls had been reduced by well over 50%. The boys' running between wickets showed possibly the most improvement over the season, with not too many / moments. Plenty of catches were taken over the season, and the wicket keeping improved so much that there was even the odd catch and stumping behind the wicket.

A big thanks to the parents for bringing the kids to training and the games each week, and particularly several of the dads helping with "throw downs" and fielding warm-ups on match days. Some extra special thank yous to Joe who helped out with some stints umpiring, Peta who scored nearly 90% of our matches, and co-coach Darren for his efforts all round during the year. We hope that everyone, players and parents, are back with the club for another season next year for more cricket.

Angus: I believe this was his first season playing cricket. Shows a lot of promise as a batsman, particularly when playing with a straight bat. His bowling perhaps lacks a bit of confidence but improved during the year, so much that he was our leading wicket-taker.

JJ: Once again showed tremendous enthusiasm out on the field. Surprised even himself at times when batting, managing to find the boundary on several occasions during the season. His bowling was of the slow and accurate variety, picking up a few wickets along the way.

Page 24

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

Jack: One of the big improvers over the year. Perhaps his batting may have improved even more had he taken the offer to bat in the nets more often. His bowling accuracy was his strength, culminating in bowling his brother when filling in for the opposition in the penultimate match.

Cameron: Another I believe to be in his first season playing cricket. At times a forceful batsman, showing very good technique for someone in his first season. Very much a confidence bowler, as he proved with some good performances through the season.

Gilbert: Once again was the action man of the team, always sliding and diving in the field. He was THE most entertaining runner between wickets since Rick Darling. Gilbert was exceedingly unlucky this season to not pick up more wickets with his accurate left-armers.

Parker: A baseball "import" in his first season, taking to cricket like a duck to water. Immensely powerful with the bat, scoring more than 300 runs, a solid bowler with real pace, and an arm that suggests, well, a baseball background. Could prove to be an exceptional player in the coming years with more seasons under his belt.

Haydon: An accurate bowler, he was rewarded for his consistency with quite a few wickets this season. Unfortunately was spooked batting early in the season by one of his own teammates in the nets, and struggled to regain his confidence during the season.

Mitch: An accurate bowler and a fielder with an even more accurate throw. Found the going a bit tough at times with the bat. However, another year or two of cricket should see his confidence and technique improve to cope, particularly if he keeps his cheery demeanour.

Dominic: Bowled with a variety of techniques this season: medium, off-spin, and leg-spin with turn that would make Shane Warne proud. Not always the best listener at the start of the season, his batting improved throughout the year to show a solid technique by the end of the season.

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

UNDER 13’s U13A’s Coaches Report What a fantastic season the under 13 A’s have had for 2014/15. This year saw a new team combination, half the boys from the previous 13s and half from the 11s. With a young team it was going to be a tough season. It didn’t take long for the boys to blend together into a very strong all round team.

The great leadership and good sporting ability of our senior players was evident from the outset and it didn’t take long to funnel down through to all the boys creating a very competitive team. By seasons end, the Terrigal 13A’s were one of the teams to look out for.

I would like to applaud all the boys in their ability to stick to our team plans and keep a cool and level head on game day. This was proven on many occasions, with our team ending up in the grand final in a very strong competition. There was a great team bond between all the boys. As always, the friendly chatter on the field would assist all the great work that the players, be it from our team or the opposition would achieve. With their natural sporting ability, it has been a pleasure to coach this fantastic team this season.

I’d like to thank the boys and their parents for continuously showing up for training and game days. I’d also like to thank the parents that would constantly help with all game day duties, such as scoring, umpiring, imputing of scores and team photography. This all made for a very enjoyable and smooth running season.

James Paterson

Managers Report Lochie Allison: Lochie had a great year of cricket. His main job for us was wicket keeper and he was just brilliant. Very fast hands keeping opposition batsmen on their toes. Lochie took seven catches behind the stumps with three stumpings and a run out. He is an excellent batsman scoring 212 runs at an average of 21. He also provided a lot of the talk when on the field. Lochie has a lot of characteristics which would see him make a great captain. He loves a laugh and is a lot of fun around a cricket team. Well done Lochie on a great season.

Sam Cross: Sam is a very enthusiastic cricketer who loves training and being with his mates just as much as playing on game day. Sam continued on from his brilliant season last year scoring 92 runs and taking nine wickets. Sam was difficult to dismiss when batting and his 2/6 against The Entrance was a great spell of bowling against quality opposition. Always up for a chat at any time, always offering to help out Sam was a pleasure to have in the team. Well played Sam.

Jack Dudney: Jack just keeps improving with each year. He is a very consistent player who had another fantastic season. Handy with the bat scoring 76 runs and his left arm bowling just keeps taking wickets. 26 wickets at an average of 7 with best figures of 3/5. Jack was also excellent in the field taking 11 catches. Jack has picked up our bowling award for this season. Well done on another great year Jack.

Mitchell Giltinan: Mitchell had a great year with the ball in hand. Often asked to open the bowling, he did a really good job in tying down opposition batsmen and creating pressure. Eight wickets for an average of 17 and his economy rate of 1.9 runs per over was fantastic. He bowled beautifully in the semi final with figures of 2/8 off four overs and in the Grand Final 1/8 off seven overs. Mitchell is also an excellent fielder taking some very sharp catches to get his tally to nine for the year. Congratulations Mitchell on a great season.

Hayden Harris: ‘Haydos’ is the quiet achiever of our team. Doesn’t say too much but he means business when gets onto the park. He is an excellent bowler with good swing who bagged 17 wickets at an average of 7.2 which are fantastic figures. Hayden is also a handy batsman to have, especially if we needed to get on with the hitting. Hayden is a good allround cricketer who is popular with his team mates and was a pleasure to have in the team. Well done Hayden.

Jack Heuston: Jack was named captain of the side this year. A talented all-rounder he has scored 247 runs at 30, taken 11 wickets at 10.6 with an economy rate of 1.7 and secured our teams fielding award with 16 catches, some of which were just brilliant. Jack also showed a great ability in understanding a match situation and then putting a plan in place to make things happen. He put a lot of thought into field placements and also kept the boys minds on the job during games. He did a great job as skipper and led the team well. Congratulations Jack.

Harrison Martin: Harry played really well for us this year, a very good player who is capable in all aspects of the game. Harry was great for us with the ball picking up 11 wickets at an average of 12.3. He took three very important wickets for the team in the semi final against Northern Power helping us secure a grand final berth. In the field he took 5 catches with his very safe hands and has a good throwing arm. Always wanting to improve his cricket, Harry is a very good trainer who puts in 100% and is a pleasure to coach. Well done Harry on a great year.

Cameron Paterson: Cam had a fantastic year of cricket. Handy with the bat when called upon including a best of 22 not out against Kincumber but bowling at the top of the order was where he did most of his work. Cameron took 19 wickets at an average of 11 with best figures of 3/8 but the day to remember for Cam was his birthday when he took 2/9 in the first innings and 3/13 in the second plus 2 catches. Another one who has great hands taking 7 catches in total and is very sharp in the field. Well played Cameron.

James Richter: James was another of our bowlers who performed really well for us. James steamed in all year with a lot of pace and bounce making plenty of batsmen nervous. Best figures of 2/19 in round two against Northern Power. James also bowled very well in the finals series against the best in the competition and he also had a very good year in the field with some fantastic fielding saving plenty of runs for his team. James likes talking about areas in his game where he can improve which is really good to see. Great effort James.

Darcy Schram: Darcy did a great job for us this year. It’s sometimes a bit hard trying to find opening batsmen but Darcy was happy to do this for us and he did a really good job. Darcy scored 147 runs this season but more importantly he did what every team needs from an opener and that’s to stay in which makes life easier for the batsmen who follow. It’s a tough place to bat and Darcy was the ‘rock at the top’ for us. Darcy also did a good job with the keeping gloves when filling in for Lochie. Congratulations Darcy, a tough job done very well.

Jamal Shoaib: Our vice captain Jamal has had another great year of cricket. He has secured the teams batting award this year by scoring 395 runs at an average of 56, just outstanding. He also bowled very well collecting 14 wickets at 10.6. Jamal fields brilliantly with a strong arm. One memorable highlight for Jamal was his batting from rounds 4 to 10 where he scored 239 runs without being dismissed, he was unstoppable! He was also a great help to our captain Jack. Well done Jamal and very well played.

Ethan Williams: Ethan is the player everyone wants in their team. He is the no fuss player with a cool head, stays calm and thinks about the situation of the match and doesn’t panic. He has loads of ability whether it’s batting, bowling or fielding. With the bat Ethan scored 104 runs but he really impressed with his bowling taking 11 wickets at an average of 7.7. His economy was also excellent. In the field he was superb taking 11 catches. He spent a lot of time fielding at point and he made this spot his own with some great catches and saving many runs. Ethan is another who puts the effort in at training and is a pleasure for any coach and manager. Well done E.C.W. David Giltinan Page 28

U13B’s Maroon

What another great year. 13 Maroon definitely played in the true spirit of the game. I would like to congratulate all the players this year for not only improving throughout the year but playing in a manner that you all should be proud of. We came a close second for the season only to lose a very close semi-final. Yes I’m biased but I think we played the semi in a much better spirit and I didn’t need a broom to help me .

My main aim for the kids is that they enjoy playing and for the most part I think they all did, yes you’re always going to disappointed in not making many runs or not getting a wicket but that’s all a part of cricket.

I have had the pleasure of seeing a lot of these kids for a few years now and watch them develop it’s great to see them all working as a team and having fun.

Liam Anderson: He was always trying his best and very determined especially when it came to bowling.

Tex Arthur: He was the organiser of the team, getting people in the right fielding spots. Also good for morale to help lift the team. He was able to let the bat do the talking as well.

Lachlan Bryer: A very deceptive bowler and he had the ability to take a wicket whenever the team needed a wicket also handy with the bat

Thomas Bunce: Those spinners most batsmen did not have a clue how to hit them their eyes lit up and they either missed them or hit a catch

Grace Dignam: I say this every time I have the pleasure of coaching Grace what a correct and technical player, Can I have a ticket to watch you play for Australia one day.

Simon Collis: the claw beware don’t hit anything near Simon in the air or he would catch the batsmen out.

Millar Elwin: another standout year for Miller, He came one wicket away for the best for the age group. He was just as good with the bat too scoring runs with ease.

Noah Farrelly: A good all round cricketer, A quick fielder and has a great arm.

Kye Fearnley: A great left handed batter, His timing was excellent it was pleasure to see his shots go to the boundary.

Robbie Hodgson: what a great bowler 5/4 his best and the best for the whole under 13’s. He loved taking wickets and a very good batter who got better every time he played

Kyle Mc Lean: he can hit a ball the destroyer with the bat four sixes in the season well done. Can bowl a good .

Special mention to the super subs Robert Bacon, Maximus Preston and Cooper Shaw who were able to fill in for us in the season

Thanks to Sally, Michael, Brett and Steve for their help throughout the season. I definitely couldn’t have done it without them.

U13B’s Gold Alex Heazlewood: our Captain Fantastic who wears his heart on his sleeve. One of the main reasons behind team success as he is a tour de force with his batting, bowling and wicket keeping. A great captain, team player and wonderful cricketer. Somehow wins around 90% of coin tosses.

Bailey Hilton: superb batsman – dynamic, aggressive and damaging. Great with the ball, strong arm in the field and a pleasure to coach. Very relaxed, confident and certainly a team player. Could represent at the highest levels.

Callum McIntosh: bowling star of the future. Gets movement in the air and off the wicket. Great action, deceptively quick and a batsman’s nightmare when bowling line and length. Very good fine / square leg fielder and catches well.

Caolan O’Dwyer: certainly one of the teams most improved cricketers and has developed into a young Irish Warnie with virtually unplayable leg spin when on a good length. Took some great wickets this season, batted and fielded well with more confidence and now seems much happier with his game.

Chet Robinson: our awesome VC who often fielded at Steve Smith standards taking some simply scintillating catches at times when we really needed wickets. Ground fielding is also top grade and is a very accomplished, smart and talented batsman whose running between wickets intimidates the opposition.

Corey Alpen: on his day bowls nasty in swingers on a difficult length to right handed batsman. Tag teams wicket keeping duties with Alex and does a great job behind the stumps. Aggressive batsman who can score runs quickly. Good strong throwing arm especially from the boundary.

Elliot Foy: seriously good bowler and will get even better. Tall quick who gets big movement off the wicket and causes a lot of discomfort to batsmen. Very accurate with most deliveries straight at the pegs. Aggressive batsman who can score quick runs and when he keeps his head down plays nice and straight.

Hayden Hansen: match winner cricketer. Can take quick wickets with his consistent line and length. Possesses an incredibly accurate throwing arm and can catch like a venus flytrap. Has a record of forming game changing batting partnerships when the team is under pressure. A very accomplished all-rounder and team player.

Josh Massie-Brahams: one of the newcomers to the team and got better and better throughout the season. Is now a very exciting bowling prospect and when focussed has the technique take a bag of wickets and become a serious strike bowler. Is a very useful batsman who can forge run accumulating partnerships and can take a great catch.

Nathan Ella: first competitive cricket season and what a beauty it was. The complete all-rounder who is comfortable opening or batting down the order, bowls a beautiful wicket taking out swinger to right handers, catches like he has a ball magnet and resembles AB de Villiers with his uncanny ability to run out batsmen.

Rory Gallagher-Smith: sensational right arm swing bowler who can get movement off the wicket and has real zip. Leading wicket taker and destructive opening bowler. Not our tallest player but perhaps the one with the biggest heart. Can take the occasional screamer of a catch and throw from the outfield better than most. Has the ability to blast quick runs with his head down.

Sam Cordery: another very much improved cricketer who proved he has what it takes to be a very accomplished batsman by compiling some big scores this season and valuing his wicket. Can bowl really well when focussed and possesses a good throwing arm.

Page 33

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

Awards Batting Award – Bailey Hilton. Our champion willow wielder scored 191 runs before the finals at an average of 47.75. A couple of our baggy green batsmen would be more than happy with that average.

Bowling Award – Rory Gallagher-Smith. Maybe not yet as tall as Starc but he can swing that ball just as much. Rory took 17 wickets before the finals at an average of 4.8.

Fielding Award – Chet Robinson. The teams number one all-rounder. Chet can do it all - bat, bowl and field but as they say “catches win matches” and Chet took some crackers.

Coaches Award – Alex Heazlewood. Successful teams are usually led by great Captains and in this case that certainly holds true. Well done Captain Fantastic.

Support Team Pete Smith was again exceptional in the Manager role keeping everyone up to date with regular email, providing refuge from the heat with his camping gazebo at games, scoring and also BBQ’s. A huge effort Pete and big thanks from all.

Adrian Heazlewood focussed on passing on his invaluable cricketing expertise to the lads at training and during games. His efforts are certainly reflected in the quantum improvement seen in each player and the success of the team overall. Adrian also had to cope with some pressure cooker umpiring decisions and sledging from his co-coach. Well done mate.

I would also like to thank all the parents for their help and support during the season. We were once again very fortunate to have such a supportive group who were always willing to help score, train, time keep and generally run around for the team.

U13C’s Coaches Report Congratulations to all the boys for such a great result this season in making it to the semi-finals!

I’m very proud of the way all the boys performed as a team and always showed great sportsmanship. We had some standout efforts from different players with batting, bowling and fielding, but it was all the boys playing so well together and supporting each other as a team, that ultimately led to our many wins and overall success this season.

There were a few boys playing their 1st or 2nd year of cricket this year. Their improvement in confidence and ability has been rewarding to see.

A big “Thank You” to all the parents and grandparents who supported the team each week and volunteered their time to score and help with the overall support of the team throughout the season. You have all helped to make this season enjoyable for everyone and a great success for all the boys.

I hope to see you all back again next season.

Managers Report They started the season as a contrasting group of boys. A few had played under 11s together, one had played for another club and some had never played cricket before! They finished the season as a real team and all friends.

Despite the varying backgrounds they finished third in the table and made it to the semis, a truly fantastic effort.

The season kicked off to a good start with a win.

But the early part of the season produced mixed results with two wins and two losses (and a bye) after the first five rounds. After that the team hit its straps and strung together four straight wins, including a victory over the eventual premiers, Lisarow Ourimbah.

Page 36

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

The second half of the round was kicked off with a victory over the other grand finalists, CC Grammar Blue. In the run down to the semis, the boys strung together five straight wins, losing only the last game to the premiers, Lisarow Ourimbah.

Disappointingly, the boys were knocked out in the first semi but put up a great display in a closely fought match.

Several of the boys turned in outstanding individual performances during the season featuring well up in the overall district rankings. Robert Bacon was the top wicket taker from the rounds in Under 13Cs with 17 wickets, followed closely by Eisse Van Hoving with 16. Josh Medaglia was in the top ten fielders as well as being in the top 20 batsmen, along with Max Preston.

Thanks to Peter Shaw for his efforts in coaching the boys to the semis in their first year together and to all the parents who supported the team every week.

UNDER 15’s U15A’s This season was always going to be a battle for our 15A’s with only three U15 players and the balance playing their first year in what is arguably the strongest division in the junior competition. With this in mind however the boys really bonded well and took on the challenges in true Terrigal Matcham spirit.

During the early part of the season we just couldn’t seem to put a complete performance together. We either batted well and then couldn’t take ten wickets or bowled well but couldn’t back it up with the bat. After Christmas we managed to put some games together winning three in row, including beating the teams coming second and third, and we slipped into the semi’s in fourth spot. Unfortunately we lost to a very good Wyong side who went on to deservedly win the competition.

Hopefully the young guys in the side have experienced a level of cricket that will hold them in good stead for next year and the guys moving up will be ready for u17’s or senior cricket depending on their choice.

To Paul Peters who managed the side with aplomb, a big thanks. No job was too hard although I think he had some inside help. Thank you to the parents (John and Jo, Michelle and Trevor, Mark, Sue) who helped out during the year coaching, umpiring, scoring and setting up.

Thanks, Steve Dignam

PLAYER PROFILES Cooper Fullerton: Was our captain and grew into this role beautifully as the season drew on. It is a difficult task in juniors to keep on top of field placing in relation to the game situation as well as dealing with the restriction on bowlers. I rested a lot of these decisions with Coop and I hope he draws confidence from his ability to deal with this. Showed glimpses of his immense batting talent but managed to find a way to get himself out each week. His 60 odd against Brisbane Water was a highlight and proves he has what it takes to be a fine senior cricketer if he so chooses.

Kobe Allison: Another senior player who had the confidence to meet the challenge against strong opposition attacks. A fine game winning half century in the first round against Southern Spirit showed his attacking skills with the bat. Not his best season with the ball however I know he is a very good swing bowler however he needs to keep working on his skills if he wants to uphold the high standard he has set in previous years – great effort to achieve 100 junior games milestone this year.

Johannes Heese: First year with the club and showed he has the making of a solid opening batsman and handy legspinner. His greatest skill was his ability to somehow bowl with penetration and variety with the Paul Oval soap. His bowling strike rate was the best in the team from limited opportunities through injury and holidays. Was always positive in the field and cheerful off it.

Page 39

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

Ben Dignam: Would love to have 11 of him in the field with his infectious attitude and boundless energy that resulted in a well-deserved team fielding award. A lack of effective parenting meant he played one game with a broken thumb and wrist and managed to take a remarkable high catch that deflected off a team mate and his injured wrist. A handy and skilful wicket keeper Ben picked up a couple of sharp chances behind the stumps. Not his best year with the bat but his dogged 19no against The Entrance showed he has the ability to be a top order batsman next year.

Harry Meyn: Harry’s positive attitude and enthusiasm resulted in a successful year and the teams bowling award. He also made some handy contributions with the bat and his 30 odd opening against the competitions strongest attack was a great reward for the conscious effort he put into his batting this season. Harry is a popular teammate and a pleasure to coach as he was always trying to improve his game and contribute in a positive manner to the team’s performance.

Jack Day: Jack struggled early in the season and was low on confidence however by training smarter he was able to turn this around and show what a talented cricketer he is with the bat and ball. His 23 not out to win the game chasing against Southern Spirit to put us into 4th spot coupled with his 3/6 against Brisbane Waters in difficult conditions proves he has the ability to be successful at this level. I expect a big year for Jack next season.

Josh Toohey: Josh contributed in all parts of the game. He is a stylish and technically correct batsman, a skilful swing bowler and a strong fielder. His 50 no against Northern Power was a highlight of his strike power and his innings of 22 no against them in the second round showed he has a mature temperament when the game requires. Had the best figures for the team of 4/11 with the old ball against Southern Spirit proving the quality of his medium pace. A worthy winner of the Coaches award for contributions on the field and his efforts to improve his game off it.

Morgan McWhirter: Morgan is developing into a fine fast bowler producing some great opening spells and then returning later with accuracy to grab a vital wicket and restrict scoring. Was able to get wickets in most games however the next step in his development will be to improve his length in order to provide more opportunities to take wickets and go through sides. Looking forward to a potent season next year. Works hard on his batting and has the makings of a very good all-rounder.

Jack Fullerton: Jack often batted at the top of the order and as an U14 player acquitted himself admirably on the back of a solid technique and good old fashion ticker. Unfortunately that deserved half century eluded him on a couple of occasions but his contribution with the bat and behind the stumps were valuable to the team’s performance.

Alex Porter: Alex improved all parts of his game this year and worked hard at training. I’m sure he will tell you that his 3 not outs robbed him of the 3 centuries he deserved from the hard work he put in at training. He was always in the game in the field becoming a super fielder square of the wicket and his constant chatter supporting his team mates and annoying the opposition showed what a valuable team member he is.

Zachery Peters: Based on his statistics one would say Zach had a reasonable year however he would be the first to realise that shot selection let him down on occasions where he was clearly in control and due to his natural talent should be converting average scores into big ones. Made some great in-roads into his running between wickets and his accurate leg spinners makes him the complete cricketer. His economy rate was by far the best in the team which is remarkable considering not only does he bowl leggies but most weeks he had to battle with a wet ball. Page 40

U15B’s The boys began the year winning their first 4 games decisively. It was at this point that the team were asked to balance up the competition in B grade where we played our next 4 games against top sides and despite no wins, we were competitive. Upon returning to C grade our results were mixed and a couple of losses and against low placed teams on the ladder meant our semi- finals hopes were dashed. It was rewarding for the team though to win their final game of the season in devastating fashion, demonstrating that anything could have been possible. Our fielding in particular improved and we witnessed some great bowling displays by individuals with all players contributing with the ball. Unfortunately, our batting proved to be inconsistent with cheap wickets falling at crucial times and this led to us losing some games that we should have won comfortably. There was healthy attendance at training sessions each Wednesday at Paul Oval. The boys were very supportive of each other at all times and they really gelled as a playing group as the season went on.

Charlie O’Malley-elected as captain for the season and our No 1 wicketkeeper. Charlie led the team admirably and took full control towards the end of the season with bowling and batting line-ups. He filled in as opener but was most comfortable in the middle order and demonstrated a reliable turn of medium pace.

Tyler Wade-Vice Captain who was very supportive of his team mates in the field leading the cry for ‘energy and enthusiasm. He fielded at slip keeping his captain company. A shoulder injury hampered his leg spin but he did manage to find form towards the end of the season.

Kade Ashton-had a great year with both bat and ball. Opening bowler who bowled some devastating spells none better than his 5 wickets for 7 runs early in the season. A tremendous runner between wickets.

Nick Dobrohotoff- Kade’s opening bat partner for most of the season. He scored his career best of 42 and was sizzling in the field in square leg positions. His bowling ranged from fast pace to loopy off-spin. A real character on and off the field.

Owen Stefani – our stylish top bat who generally came in at first or second drop. Owen also bowled menacing fast pace and will become even more dangerous when his consistency with the ball improves. Owen also filled in as our second wicket-keeper doing a fine job.

Matt Polmear - our tall lanky pinch hitter who was always keen to go after the bowlers. Matt pulled off some miraculous catches during the season but it was his accurate bowling and knack to get wickets that proved most effective.

Mason Hunter - our opening bowler with the stylish headband. Mason really worked on his line and length and was desperate to starve batsman of runs. He hopes to develop into an all-rounder in future seasons.

Jack Ferguson - a real character in the team who proved invaluable in the middle order, especially in the second half of the season. Loves to play pull shots and scored many a boundary.

Darcy Hollins - greatly improved in the field making extra cover and mid-off his position. Has an unorthodox bowling action but was reliable in keeping run rates down and snagging regular wickets.

Eden Homan-Corless - a real improver in the team in his first ever season. After a few games he settled into fine leg but it was his tremendous improvement with leg-spin bowling that lead to him becoming our go-to man at the end of innings. Page 42

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

Alex Shaw - another player in his first ever season. He did a great job as ‘towel man’ and became a rock at the top of the when the team needed to stabilise an innings.

Mitchell Graham - had his first ever season and made it his goal to develop a consistent line and length, which he achieved. Also very effective with accurate ‘return to wickets’ throws.

Tom Humphries - impressed all in his first season with his consistent display of sportsmanship throughout the season. A credit to his team and a shining display of what the spirit of the game is all about.

Helpers: Jo Hollins - manager in her first year keeping parents informed with practice and social arrangements.

Jason Ashton - coaching deputy and reserve umpire who gave invaluable advice to players and the coach throughout the season

John Dobrohotoff - our faithful scorer who took on the task willingly and reliably.

Andrew O’Malley – for assistance with umpiring, a great support on hot days.

And again thanks to the parents who made each game an enjoyable social experience for all.

UNDER 17’s U17B’s This team started off very strong, but were brought back to reality with a run of losses, before finally showing what they could really achieve with the game before the finals. Then, building on their ability and belief, went on to win the Grand Final! Yay!!!

Round 1 I was not even there but according to reports they gave it to Wyong who finished with 130 runs while we chased that down, only losing one wicket with Nick McSwann not out for 52.

Round 2 At home against Kincumber, batting first and scoring a modest 103 with Nick McSwann top scoring 22, but then wiping Kincumber out for 76 with one batsman scoring 56 runs and 10 extras so do the maths on the rest!! With our weapon taking a season best of 5-5 off 5 overs they had plenty of time so batted again scoring 4/186 off 29 overs with Brendan Witt scoring a season best 83 runs and Stephen Coates 50. Good fun!

Round 3 Back to reality … at home again against Southern Spirit Grammar who batted first scoring 7/143, in reply they had a collapse with Dom Sirio at #11 scoring 24 to almost win us the game. We were eventually all out for 139 with top scorer Brendan Witt at 42.

Round 4 Against Warnervale who batted first scoring 125, we lost early wickets with Tarran Cooper steadying on 30, however we ended up all out for 89 off 36 overs with the team slashing at their short bowling too much.

Round 5 At home against Southern Spirit CC, we batted first losing 3 cheap wickets, before Brendan Witt at 26 and Dom Sirio at 23 gave something, however, we ended up all out for 91 off 32 overs – the opposition chasing scored 9/157 batting on. There has been many discussions about valuing your wicket, playing with a straight bat and respecting good bowling, however, many in the team still wanted to slash!

Round 6 Against Wyong and batting first scoring 9/191, finally batting out the overs, with Nick McSwann opening and remaining not out for 77, Jay Lee 26 and Brendan Witt 34, we bowled out Wyong for 134 off 38 overs. Some promising signs but still not against one of the better teams!

Round 7 Some fun to be had against Kincumber again! Kincumber winning the toss and bowling. This game was the turning point of the season with the top 4 making only 20 runs, however, Jack Fitzgerald (41) and Tarran Cooper (58) showed a long, responsible and mature partnership – I was even telling them to go harder! Finishing at 5/161 then bowling Kincumber out for

Page 45

Juniors Yearbook 2014-2015 Season

27 with 3 wickets to Tarran Cooper, Kincumber reversed the order and batted again, this time 8/49 off 18 overs with only a major ‘dawdling’ tactic saving them from an outright defeat!

Round 8 Back to reality again! Against Southern Spirit Grammar who batted first scoring 124 with Dom Sirio taking 3 wickets. In reply 4 scores between 10-20 ending all out for 106 - work to do!

Round 9 At home against Warnervale who batted first with their weapon opener scoring 102, yet all out for 153 in 40 overs. Some good bowling from us! Batting: Cameron Caffell top score at 21 but we were all out for 100 – they are still getting shown up against good bowling.

Round 10 Against the top team, Southern Spirit CC, batting first Jay Lee scored 20, then again Tarran Cooper at 31 and Jack Fitzgerald at 35 with a team inspiring partnership. At one stage Andy Caffell, umpiring, was telling the whole team to take note of how this pair were batting/running. Ending on 7/140 then after a good start from Southern Spirit they took 8 wickets for 13 runs, all out for 97 runs, Terrigal-Matcham winning by 43. This now places Grammar at #1, Southern Spirit 2nd, Warnervale 3rd and Terrigal-Matcham 4th.

The Semi-Final against Top Team Grammar Terrigal batting first with a good start from Nick McSwann 18, followed by a flurry of cheap wickets only to have possibly the best, and most timely, innings of the year, 57 to Stephen Coates including 7 x 4s and 1 x 6 with Lorcan Gallagher-Smith hanging in there to post 151 off 47 overs. The bowling and fielding were good with some awesome catches, eventually bowling Grammar out for 110 off 42 overs.

They have now beaten the best and made it to the GRAND FINAL!! Against Warnervale who won the toss and batted, which concerned our team as, in their opinions, they can’t chase a score! The team looked really sharp in the morning and started well with Warnervale losing their 3rd wicket at 22, out came our biggest worry but the much underrated Tom Kelly took his wicket on 32 (top score) ending all out for really chasable 120, with the ever reliable Nick McSwann 3 wickets, Tom Kelly with 2 and Jack Fitzgerald with 2. Losing Nick, our opener, for 8, Jay Lee hit 22 including 1 x 6, then again Tarran Cooper and Jack Fitzgerald showed another mature and disciplined innings, scoring 19 and 22 respectively, before Stephen Coates and Brendan Witt came out to hit the winning runs. Everyone ran onto the field to pummel the batsmen! Wow! What a season – going from a team who couldn’t hold their wicket against good bowling to a team who could dominate and control the game. Well done boys!

Overall, we had a great ‘team behind the team’ … Graham McSwann – umpiring and on-field direction Andy Caffell (Drill Sargent Andy) – umpiring & fielding training drills (very helpful at 7.30am!) Anne Fitzgerald – scoring every single game (what patience and staying power!) Kaye Kelly (Manager) – always reliable to send texts/emails and kept us all in line with a smile (best at the coffee run too!!) And a special thanks to Paul Mills and Geoff Patterson for the extra coaching tips! Page 46
