1 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The past season has again been difficult for the board of the ATCA and allour member clubs. Problems with the program and some late nominations for some teams and grounds made thestart extremely difficult for Rick Darling, Andrew Sinclair and David Heyzer to present the gradings and draw on time. Needless to say Rick has worked very hard to eliminate the problems for the coming season.

As always the contentious hot and wet weather conditions are always a worry to the Board and Iam afraid they are in such an unenviable position that what ever decision they make theyare going to be unpopular at times. Nevertheless all their decisions are made with the best interest of the ATCA in view.

The board has been well led by the chairman Andrew Sinclair who has indicated that he will not be seeking re- election. Andrew was elected chairman at the most difficult time in the history of the Association and has conducted himself like the gentleman he is, and he will be sorely missed for the grasp of any situation.

Our treasurer Aaron Read has indicated he will be unable to continue and his excellent accounting will be hard to replace. My personal thanks to both and I'm sure all the ATCA members will besorry to lose their fine contribution.

It appears that the problems encountered over the past three years has stimulated interest in members who are prepared to stand for election to the Board and it is to be hoped that we will again havea number of candidates for positions.

The continued growth of the junior competition is a boost for the Association and most clubsnow realise the importance of their junior section and all are endeavoring to grow even larger. Both the ATCA and the SACA are eager to help establish junior teams in many ways, and I urge clubs to contact the Associations for help.

This year saw the first two issues of the "Long Leg" a magazine developed by Peter Argent specifically for the ATCA We trust it will be well received by the clubs to enable it to become a regular print.

Congratulations to all the countless volunteers throughout the association, as we all know our clubs and the ATCA wouldn't function without them. Well done to all Premiership teams (cherish the moment) and congratulations to all individual trophy winners.

Thanks to Rick Darling who has had a difficult baptism but I know he has come to grips with the position and will be a big asset to the ATCA in the coming years.

This season is the 751 year for the ATCA and lets hope it is something special.

My position as President does not involve me heavily in the running of the ATCA but I appreciate the Board giving me the opportunity to put in my six penny worth at the Board meetings.

GOOD CRICKET TO ALL

BARRY FRY PRESIDENT

2 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

This season obviously commenced' with considerable disruption arising from fixtures problems. In endeavouring to allow for teams to be inserted or removed very late, the ATCA General Manager and Board confronted numerous ground clashes which lead to enormous disruption at the commencement of the season. I'm sorry it occurred. It is a problem that has been rectified.

Throughout the season the lack of water for turf was of concern. This is an issue that will need to continue to be monitored to see what steps can be done to ensure that grounds have the best possible turf wicket and oval facilities, given ongoing water restrictions.

The dryness also involved very hot weather and the application of the heat policy also became an issue. The balance of ensuring reasonable protection for players, umpires and other officials whilst endeavouring to play an outdoor sport during Australian summers at all times needs to be thoughtfully considered. As I have previously said, the facilities at our grounds are vastly different in catering for hot weather, and the standard of our competition varies enormously. These factors must be taken into account.

In relation to the umpiring, the ATCA returned to an arrangement involving the Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires Association. I hope that can successfully move forward, particularly to ensure we maximise the number of umpires and quality.

Financially the 2006/2007 year achieve about budget performance. However, there are some exciting times ahead. Ultimately in my view we need to keep the costs paid by our clubs to a minimum whilst obviously providing maximum benefits to the clubs. There is no surprise in this statement. The difficultly however is in achieving such a result. Some exciting sponsorship' opportunities seem to be unfolding which I hope will assist the ATCA financial performance into the future.

I would like to thank the Board members for the time that they have been prepared to put into the administration of the ATCA. Further, I want to thank all other ATCA community volunteers, which include representatives of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires Association, all the persons who hear player reports, tribunal matters and those persons involved in the review of our by -laws. Prior to the commencement of season 2006 /07 there was considerable effort made by numerous people to update the by -laws and I thank those for their efforts.

Finally, I do want to encourage any persons who are considering volunteering for the ATCA Board that they should embark on that exercise. Whilst it can be a considerable time input it is also very rewarding. As with any volunteer organisation, it needs continuous input from a broad sector of people who understand its community and have the time available.

ANDREW SINCLAIR CHAIRMAN

3 GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT

Needless to say the lead up to last season, in particular the fixtures/programming disaster, was far from satisfactory and caused a lot of headaches not only for myself and the Board butmore importantly the clubs. I suppose this was bought about by my own inexperience and the general lack of standard operation procedures that were in place. The virtual non existent handover from the outgoing General Manager inmy opinion had an over -riding effect for my mistakes particularly the fixtures. Also the advice I received from all quarters, some of it good, some of it bad, added to this difficult time. On the positive side I have learnt who to seek advice from, and whom to avoid. I apologise for the mistakes I have made but can assure you that they won't happen again thisseason as things will be done my way.

Starting in February last year I was confronted with six player reports inmy first week and this was followed with a fluffier seven up until the end of the season. All this was a daunting prospect if thiswas a trend for things to come. With the tightening of the player /club penalties and the further streamlining of theprocess, this season however has been a different story. Congratulations must go to all the players and clubs for their conduct this season, as only a total of four player reports have been heard by the Compliance Enquiry Panel, or the Commissioner. This is an acceptable amount considering there have been over 1300 games played throughout the season, including juniors. Well done.

On a negative matter but still on compliance, I am astounded at some of the inter club bickering,or long standing feuds that were brought to my attention last season. During my time asa District player and coach I cannot recall any such incidents. Some ATCA clubs and officials have lost sight of the fact that at the end of the day they are here to play cricket. I am also astounded with some clubs' lack of acceptance and continual complainingon decisions that the Board has handed down. Clubs have agreed to a process that is in place for issuesor complaints to be heard, but when that process has been exhausted it should be time to accept the "'s" decision.

Congratulations to all Grand Final winners albeit some by default due to the wet conditions. Iwas fortunate to be at the A3 Grand final between Unley and Kilburn at Wallcerville. Itwas a super finish with no one knowing who had won the game even after the stumps were drawn. The umpires of the day stood by the bylaws and the winners trophy was awarded to both teams. A fitting end to the two best teams all season.

Special thanks to Sarah Fry who helps me out on average about six to eight hoursa week. Her expertise in navigating her way around contentious computer issues as well as dealing with most of the invoicing and banking is more than appreciated. Sarah also has full time employment elsewhere,so her commitment to Adelaide Turf should not go unnoticed.

Thanks once again to all our sponsors. National Australia Bank was our major sponsor with other valuable contributions coming from Kookaburra, Sports Centre, Foxtel and Health Partners. Since last season I have been actively pursuing more sponsors. I have instigated an introduction plan to be followed up with a prospectus which explains the GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE levels of sponsorship. This approach has so far worked exceedingly well and I expect ATCAs sponsorship income to be 100% if not 200% greater than last year. All clubs will reap the benefits from the sponsorship dollars, whether that will be reduced affiliation fees, coaching clinics, improved facilities etc. is yet to be decided but we all should be committed to supporting and give something back to our sponsors in return.

RICK DARLING GENERAL MANAGER

4 UMPIRES DIRECTORS REPORT

A season of change greeted umpires as the change in direction was back to an ATCUA / SACUA approach. Umpires were directed to align with Adelaide Tuff Cricket Umpires Association along with the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association. This initially made it hard to organise the umpiring functions, but as the season progressed, programs fell into place and overall ran smoothly.

Most umpires attended the winter school held by SACA at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday evenings in July and August and completed the examination set by Cricket Australia. The school was run over six weeks and covered the 42 Laws of Cricket. A full Saturday practical day was held in August at the Adelaide Oval mainly for new umpires, covering the main laws such as LBW, signaling, positioning and a familiarising session for the new umpires, outlining their requirements for umpiring. I conducted two sessions in September / October covering the ATCA By -Laws, and these were attended by umpires who registered to umpire in the ATCA competition.

During the season, I conducted a special clinic at Goodwood Oval for 10 of their players who participate in lower grades (non- umpired) and covered the basic laws and answered many queries relating to aspects which arise during matches.

During the season, we had the use of - 41 umpires in total. These umpires comprised of 32 regularly available for Saturday matches, 4 college umpires who were available on non - school playing days and 10 regularly available for Under 17 matches. We lost 6 umpires from the previous year, but were able to offset this by picking up 8 new umpires, 2 of which rejoined aftera years break.

I met each month at Adelaide Oval with the ATCA Umpires Sub - Committee chaired by Peter Smith to discuss relevant umpiring matters in the competition. These meetings brought the ATCA together with the ATCUA and myself. Together, we sought answers to umpire related matters with successful results. An example was the successful use of three umpires officiating during the over 40 degree heat affected matches.

The selectors for the season were Doug French, Ken Greenwood and myself. We met on Monday evenings before every match, putting in many hours to try and get the balance required to obtain suitability of umpires for all matches throughout the whole season including the finals. Thanks to both of them for their hard work, commitment, involvement and excellent approach.

Umpires were supplied to all Association matches played by the ATCA representative teams. These included C.U.S.A. Under 17 Matches (including the Grand Final) and C.U.S.A. Senior and Under 21 matches. Umpires were also supplied to mid -week intercollegiate matches held throughout the season.

During the season. umpires had the opportunity to attend the monthly S.A.C.U.A. meetings held at Adelaide Oval. Additionally, they attended monthly A.T.C.U.A. meetings which discussed matters arising from Captains Match Reports and brushed up on general Laws and By -Laws.

The A.T.C.A. / A.T.C.U.A. end of season break up dinner evening was again held at the West Adelaide Football Club and was very successful. Cameron & Jason Borgas were the guest speakers and presented some of the awards. All trophies were given to the respective winners, and the Grand Final umpires were announced. Greg Gade and Peter Smith were congratulated on being given the honour of umpiring the Al Grand Final, a reward for their excellent performances during the season. Geoff Gordon & Klaus Plumeier were given the A2 final due to Woodville Rechabites playing in the Al Final. The Most Improved Umpires award was awarded to Wayne Kelly, a second year umpire who had the pleasure of umpiring the second half of the season in Al Premier Grade with distinction.

The electronic match reporting system was not able to give any significant individual umpires statistics for the season. It is hoped that by next season, this will be corrected so we can analyse individual umpires reports generated from the Captains Match Reports after each match. I was fortunate to be able to use Lindsay Jenkinson (an ex Al Grade umpire) as an umpires observer for the season. Lindsay spent many hours each Saturday observing different umpires and sent in individual reports on each umpire. These reports were invaluable for selection and umpire analysis. Many thanks to Lindsay for a thankless task well done.

My thanks to Rick Darling for his support during the season. His tireless efforts to ensure things ran smoothly was appreciated by myself and with help from Sarah, accomplished the tasks set before him.I believe the overall quality and standard of umpires improved as the season progressed and at the season's end, consistency was good and complaints were few.

42 ADELAIDE TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC

TREASURERS REPORT

FOR THE TWELVE MONTHS ENDED 31 MAY 2007

Please find accompanying this report the financial statements for the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association Inc (ATCA) for the twelve months ended 31 May 2007.

At 31 May 2006 the Association had achieved a level of financial reserves that provided appropriate security as well as allowing for the development of the Association and its members.

The Board took a number of decisions late in the 2006 year and early in the 2007 year that looked to further develop and promote the Association. These decisions included the employment of Rick Darling as General Manager, increased media exposure and the Long Leg Magazine. In addition, decisions were taken for the ATCA to pay for the cost of a 31 Umpire at Premier Grade matches when the heat policy was in operation, and for the ATCA to resume contributing to the management cost of the ATCUA.

Naturally, such activities do involve a cost, and the Board made the decision to fund these for the 2007 year predominantly from the accumulated fmancial reserves, rather than passing the cost directly onto its membersIf successful, it was hoped that such decisions would become self funding in future years.

This resulted in the Board setting a budget for the 2007 year for a net deficit of $9,500. The accompanying fmancial statements report a net deficit of $5,000, a position better than that budgeted.

The following points are noted in addition to the above:

The growth in affiliation fees is predominantly reflective of the increased number of teams participating in the Association, Minimal specific advertising, predominantly website and handbook, was sold this year in addition to that provided under sponsorship arrangements, Significantly greater fines were incurred by clubs this year, New By Laws books were provided this year, The Presentation Evening was operated at closer to cost this year, although additional cost was incurred for shields and trophies, Note that General Manager costs in 2006 were lower predominantly due to the period between A Ramsay departing and the commencement of R Darling,

The Board considers that the Association's Funds are adequate in order to allow the Association to:

operate during the off - season, operate with an appropriate level of financial security, and take advantage of any opportunities that may arise.
