TURF TWENTY20 The batting was a bit of a non-event with all players looking forward to wielding the willow - Lampy, BJ and Stu wiped out the total with about 8 overs TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL VICTORY remaining - Lampy the Schofferhoffer recipient with 50 odd including a six for his first scoring shot. A successful tournament for the Mortgage Force veterans with plenty of laughs, sledging and bevies - a good time was had by all.

The victorious Mortgage Force Twenty20 Veterans After having a false start a few weeks earlier when the game was postponed thanks to some bright spark leaving sprinklers on at Gepps Cross we finally got the 20/20 grand final under way. A couple of unfortunate withdrawals saw the inclusion of CJ and the Ox, who flew in from Perth to be part of the day. In Brooksy with the Twenty20 trophy sensational conditions the skipper again lost the toss and we were sent into the field on a postage stamp size WALKERVILLE NEWS ground. We opened the bowling with the pacy duo, MG and Matho, and the opposition took to them in the first couple of overs and we looked like we could be chasing AROUND THE GROUNDS an enormous total. Thankfully a and some good The A grade were just not up to the task of chasing bowling, in tandem with serviceable , saw us Pooraka’s total of 231 falling 50 runs short. Shaun restrict the Unley Old Fellas to 126. The fielding was a Mathieson had a welcome return to form with a 3 sight to behold with players memories writing cheques haul and handy runs in the lower order. that the bodies couldn’t cash. It is hard to believe opportunities only to miss 3 stumping chances and BJ but this time its not the Oldman Frick who has appearing to run without actually moving. As much as performed but the forgotten son Joe (I think the boys it hurts to say, the big red machine, Ox, was the pick of were starting to call him brother of Sam). Joe had a the bowlers with 4 for 19 off his 4 overs. This double with runs and a 5 wicket haul. He still has the performance after he couldn’t hit the pitch for his first 3 ball in his pocket! deliveries. In the C grade Ian ‘Judas’ Mazzure-Johnstone set the game a light with his highest personal score of 72. The ever green Neil Powell scored 60 not out in a lone hand with Johnny Wilson claiming 3 scalps in the D grade’s loss to Marion. The LOC’s had an eventful day after putting up a competitive score were passed 9 down against Pooraka with one of the opposition making a 100 after being dropped on 3. Congratulations to Georgie Vass and his wife on the birth of their son William, mother, baby and Georgie are doing just fine. Ladies Day was a smashing success with many of the wives and girlfriends enjoying in the clubs hospitality.

Host Paul ‘Wooley’ Reid did a fantastic job running the Ox showing the form that claimed him four victims event. Special thanks to Paul and Shaun for the work in the Twenty20 Grand Final against Unley they put into getting the event off the ground. Thanks also to Georgie and Lampy for donating gifts for the girls This Friday the Cricket Club takes on the Soft Ball club in the first inter-club challenge. There is a trophy up for grabs but more importantly bragging rights! The first event is lawn bowls at the Walkerville bowls club. There are only a few spots left so if you are keen on a fun Friday night then see Shaun or Leo to register. Meals are served from 6 and the event is looking to kick off at 6.45. The weather will be fine for this outdoor event. During the week a number of club members had the opportunity to go to the 75th Dinner Anniversary of the Adelaide Turf. This was a great night with ex-test player and now ex Redback player Matt Elliott as the guest speaker. It doesn’t matter how many fielders you put there The night went extremely well with many past players BJ will still find a way to play his square drives and officials catching up and reliving old times. Walkerville oval will be hosting two games for the Country Carnival. On Wednesday the 20th and Friday THE MASTER AND THE APPRENTICE the 22nd of February. After the Friday match presentations will be held up in the Walkerville club rooms which the cricket club will be hosting. If your free and willing to lend a hand to serve some food then it would be greatly appreciated.

The veterans 20/20 side won their Grand final against Unley. The side dominated the competition and gratefully accepted the broken trophy that Rick Darling presented to Craig Brooks. The teams sponsor Corey ‘Ox’ Drew even managed to fly in from Perth and find himself a spot in the team!! Lucky his left arm darts were a deadly asset for the team or there may have been questions asked. One of the rarest photo’s taken this season was one But it was good a see so many fantastic old blokes of the great man “Kym Reid” in deep discussions waddling and limping around on the field together. ROUND 9

A1 PREMIER – ROUND 9 VS POORAKA AT WALKERVILLE

An overcast, warm day greeted the boys for their contest against Pooraka at home. Due to the conditions and a bit of an up and down pitch after winning yet another toss (casino here I come) we sent the Pooraka’s boys in. Will and Iggy started well in particular Maxy who was proving difficult to handle. A rare catch at silly point and a classic stumping by Chopper (as if he’d never Tony “Pepperino” poses for yet another picture for taken the gloves of) got the boys away to a solid start. the Messenger Newspaper. The Pooraka boys in testing conditions started to hit over the top with good success and broke the shackles aided by some missed chances in the field. (Robbo almost pulled of catch of year at deep cover – it was such a good effort we decided not to fine him, lets not talk about Tony’s). Pooraka were going along nicely at 4/157 after tea until Panz brought of a classic one hander at gully (rumour is his feet actually got of the ground). This started a mini collapse to have Pooraka at 7/170. Matho was bowling well until his long run up finally took its toll and had to be replaced for the final part of the day. All bowlers and Panz gets down low to avoid a Yorker!!!!! fielders (great work by Robbo and Stewie for fielding in positions that had the word Deep in front of it) battled A3– ROUND 9 VS POORAKA AT POORAKA hard but to Pooraka’s credit they fought out the day to be all out 231. A shuffle of the 25 overs at them and looked the goods with batting order appeared to provide more balance to the Pooraka finishing on 5/50. Joe Frick was the pick of the top order as Duncs and Stewie opened the innings. With bowlers with 4/21. most boys up the top getting a start however we quickly slumped to 6/60 during a testing period. Both Panz and Day two saw a normal Pooraka belter and we got them Matho steadied the ship and took us to tea 6/90. out for 142. B2– ROUND 9 VS WOODVILLE SOUTH AT Overall, it was obviously disappointing to lose from the LEDGER RESERVE position we were in, but it was fantastic to see Ian step Woodville South won the toss and not surprisingly up and do well as an opener. You may recall he batted elected to bat on what looked to be a good pitch for number 11 in the first B2 game of the season, and in batting. Newcomer to the club, Rory O'Sullivan, was fact has batted at 11 in a few A3 games also! Clearly a very impressive in his opening spell of 10 overs before wasted talent at 11! It was also great to see Rory the drinks break. He bowled with great pace and really bowling so well and unsettling the batsmen in the first tested the opening batsmen who could barely get the innings. Hopefully he will have a bit more luck in the ball away, however, like the other bowlers, he did not next game. have much luck at all. C2– ROUND 9 VS MARION AT WAITE Suddenly we were back in the game as they went to tea at 2/100 off 41 overs. Unfortunately we were not able to The first day of this encounter was abandoned, because take the early wickets we needed after the break and the pitch had not been prepared. Some water had they ended up with a very competitive score, with one returned the pitch to its usual greenness for the second of their openers making 100 (or was that 99 plus a day. We weren't able to accelerate as we would have liked to We believed that if we could bat the 80 overs we would in the later overs and we were probably 20-30 runs pass their score. "Judas" was promoted to opening short of a decent target. Nonetheless, our attack stuck to batsman for the first time in senior cricket. The result their task very well and at 5/99 we were a chance, but was a very well compiled 72, including several cracking we couldn't get another break through and they passed drives, as he batted through to tea and then a few overs us in the 35th over. John Wilson bowled well taking thereafter. A fantastic effort given the challenge. Earlier 3/39 with good support from Jack McCarron, Mike in the day we lost "Magnum" in an eventful first over Joughin and David Chapman. that included a dropped catch first ball (by the 'keeper) and an edge past second slip for four. "Sprunga" played a solid innings of 20 odd giving LOC – "Judas" great support, "Orby" played some nice shots, ROUND 14 VS GEPPS CROSS AT CHARLES but it was "Cartman" who was able to stay in for a CAMPBELL longer period of time with Ian (and beyond) as we went to tea at 4/157. We looked in very good shape at that Scores: Walkerville 140 (D Hamalainen 62*, W point and had a reasonably good chance of winning, Dabinett 43) lost to Gepps Cross 9/158 (H Shields needing 115 from 40 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Ian 3/38, T Walker 3/32) fell soon after the break, then "Cartman" continued on and played another solid innings including several ROUND 15 VS POORAKA AT CHARLES cracking shots (much better than his indoor cricket CAMPBELL form!) Unfortunately we were bowled out shortly after he got out, 43 runs short of our target, which was Scores: Walkerville 9/181 (D Fry 50, D Hamalainen disappointing as the game was clearly there for the 44) lost to Pooraka 9/182 taking. THE OTHER, OTHER, OTHER THE CHANGEROOMS GREAT DEBATE –

Just thought I’d drop you parkland cricketers a line and let you know that being the quickest bowler in the world and the most marketable I still take notice of the little guys in the game and their concerns. I really do feel your pain when it comes to the burning issues that cause debate amongst the lesser cricketers of this world.

If it wasn’t for my whites I wouldn’t be able to have a $450,000 ACB contract and play for Australia. However if it wasn’t for my creams I couldn’t play in the UK and earn $400,000 playing County Cricket. Stewie brings in inspirational slogans to every game If it wasn’t for my Baggy Green cap I couldn’t do my to fire him up before he faces the quicks. Wee-Bix commercials which earn me $200,000 a year. However if it wasn’t for my floppy hat, Channel 7 wouldn’t sponsor me so that’s worth about $200,000. The company Skins sponsor me too so I wear their products which is worth about $150,000. However with Gatorade I’m not allowed to wear Skins in their adds because they reckon their products are good enough and that’s worth about $150,000 a year. And so If it wasn’t for all of these things put together I wouldn’t be a superstar in India with my singing and acting career about to take off, and that could be worth millions!!!!!!!

So my part time friends debate is a good thing when Tony and Robbo relaxing in the changerooms after you have nothing however when you reach my status in they have tidied up their gear!!! the game its all money to me.
