Under Stage 3 of the HK2030 Study, Development Scenario and Development Options are formulated. The Development Options are then subject to transport, economic, financial as well as environmental assessments. Under the integrated approach adopted for the Study, the transport requirements identified for the Development Options are also assessed in terms of the environmental, economic and financial implications in order that a meaningful comparison of the Development Options could be made. 3. Under the Reference Scenario, various development choices have been considered to satisfy the land requirements. They can broadly be categorised into two different options of development patterns, namely Decentralisation and Consolidation. The details are presented in the paper on Development Options under the Reference Scenario. Assessments have been carried out to identify the transport requirements of the two Development Options in 2010, 2020 and 2030. The findings are summarised in the following sections. Development Options 4. Under the Reference Scenario, the population in 2030 could be in the region of 9.2 million which is only marginally more than the population of 8.9 million for 2016 adopted in the previous strategic planning.

    Task Force on Water-land Interface For discussion TFWL/01/2018 on 12 July 2018 An Update on the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme PURPOSE This paper provides an update of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) and the improvement it brings to the water quality of Victoria Harbour. BACKGROUND 2. The HATS, formerly known as the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS), is the largest sewerage infrastructure project in Hong Kong. Aimed at improving the water quality of Victoria Harbour, the Scheme comprises 16 preliminary treatment works (PTWs) across the districts around Victoria Harbour, a total of 44 km length of deep sewage conveyance tunnels, the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW) and a submarine outfall for the discharge of treated effluent (Figure 1). The system serves over 5.7 million population, and can handle 2.45 million cubic metres of sewage per day, equivalent to the volume of 1,000 Olympic- sized swimming pools. 3. The project was implemented in two Stages. Stage 1, which serves the Kowloon, Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Chai Wan and Shau Kei Wan areas, was commissioned in December 2001. Stage 2A of the project was subsequently commissioned in December 2015, extending the areas served to cover northern and western Hong Kong Island. In between these, the disinfection system in the SCISTW was put into operation in March 2010. 4. Further details about the implementation of HATS are detailed in the paper ref. Y. Leung 4,5,7 , Yik-Hei Sung 6, David Dudgeon 4 & Jian-Wen Qiu 1,2 Bottom trawling, which is highly detrimental to seabed habitats, has been banned in some jurisdictions to mitigate the problems of habitat destruction and overfishing. However, most reports of ecosystem responses to trawling impacts originate from temperate latitudes, focusing on commercial species, and recovery of invertebrate macrobenthos from trawl ban has hardly ever been studied in the tropics. In Hong Kong (lat. 22.4°N), a history of intensive 1234567890():,; trawling with various types of gears has long degraded coastal ecosystems. To facilitate the recovery of fisheries resources and associated benthic ecosystems, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region implemented a territory-wide trawl ban on December 31, 2012. Comparison of surveys conducted in June 2012 (before the trawl ban) and June 2015 (2.5 years after the ban) revealed higher organic contents in sediment and lower suspended-solid loads in water column, as well as a significant increase in site-based abundance, species richness, functional diversity and among-site similarity of macrobenthos after the trawl ban.     - 170 - 10. HONG KONG’S STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE UNDER CHINESE SOVEREIGNTY Tai Ming Cheung Hong Kong has come a long way since it was dismissed as a barren rock a century and a half ago. This bastion of freewheeling capitalism today is a leading international financial, trading and communications center serving one of the world’s fastest growing economic regions. But Hong Kong is also entering a period of considerable change and uncertainty following its reversion to Chinese sovereignty that is likely to have a far- reaching impact on its strategic importance and role over the coming years. As a British colony, Hong Kong was an important outpost for the West to keep an eye on China and safeguard busy sea-lanes. Under Chinese rule, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) will play a crucial role in boosting China’s economic growth and promoting Beijing’s long-term goal of reunification with Taiwan. How China handles Hong Kong’s return will have major consequences for the territory as well as for China’s relations with the international community. The world will be watching very carefully whether Beijing will adhere to its international commitments of allowing the SAR to retain a high degree of autonomy. The U.S. has said that the transition will be a key issue in determining its future relations with China. This paper will examine the strategic implications of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule.     PR080/20 6 December 2020 Vending Machines Set Up at 10 MTR Stations for Public to Collect COVID-19 Specimen Collection Packs with Convenience The MTR Corporation has been closely monitoring the pandemic and fighting the virus with the community. To facilitate the Government’s Enhanced Laboratory Surveillance Programme for the public to access COVID-19 testing service with convenience, vending machines will be set up at ten MTR stations for the public to collect COVID-19 specimen collection packs starting tomorrow (7 December 2020). Following communication with relevant government departments, ten stations across the MTR network have been identified for the purpose, namely Ngau Tau Kok, Kwai Fong, North Point, Tiu Keng Leng, Wong Chuk Hang, Tai Wai, Tai Po Market, Siu Hong, Kowloon and Tsing Yi stations. About 10,000 specimen collection packs supplied by a government contractor per day will be, in general, evenly distributed to the vending machines located in the unpaid area of these stations. Each station will have a fixed supply each day and each person can collect one pack while stocks last. Members of the public can collect the packs with their Octopus, free of charge, at the stations during operating hours. “Traffic News” of the MTR Mobile will provide information about the supply of specimen collection packs including whether stations are out of stock or packs are still available for the public’s reference. Under the premise of fighting the pandemic, the Corporation will communicate with relevant government departments and suitably adjust the arrangements for distribution points based on actual demands to facilitate the Government’s measures.

    An Artistic Journey Begins at MTR Tsing Yi Station September 4, 2006 Passengers using MTR or Airport Express services at the MTR Tsing Yi station can enjoy a breath of tranquility with the launch today (4 September 2006) of the artwork - “Beginning of Journey” – a three-dimensional wind driven kinetic sculpture made of metal and fabric that is suspended from the ceiling of the Tung Chung Line Concourse. Inspired by ships stirred by a gentle breeze setting sail on a voyage, the artwork moves with the flow of air in the atrium. This latest “art in mtr - art in station architecture” creation is by award-winning Japanese kinetic sculptor, Mr Yoichi Takada. It is the third of three artworks under the Airport Express Artwork series commissioned by the MTR Corporation and jointly sponsored by Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, Hutchison Whampoa Limited and CITIC Pacific Limited. The initiative was launched in 1997 with HK$11 million of funding. “We are very happy to see the third artwork of the series now unveiled. We believe that this meaningful initiative not only enhances the environment, but also heightens cultural awareness, as well as brings inspiration to the people of Hong Kong,” said Ms Grace Woo, Executive Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited. “City life is often hectic, and it’s a luxury to enjoy a little tranquility. We hope MTR passengers will find the silent and gentle motions of the artwork soothing,” said Mr Andrew McCusker, Operations Director of MTR Corporation.
