Substantive Consultant Anaesthetist- 2 posts Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital sites 10 programmed activities (full time) We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Consultant Anaesthetists to join the team of Consultants in the Anaesthetic Departments at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. Anaesthetics is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. Both ICU units have received the rating of Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. These are posts in general anaesthesia based at Wexham Park Hospital and the Heatherwood Hospital with the opportunity to subspecialise in Obstetrics, Regional, Trauma and colorectal anaesthesia dependent on individual interest and training. The posts have arisen due to retirements and service expansion. We are looking to recruit for 2 posts, however there may be scope for more if we get suitable high quality candidates. We are keen to foster individual interests within Anaesthesia, including research and quality improvement ambitions and will encourage continued development within a job planning review and appraisal. Introduction The Trust’s Anaesthetic Services achieved the highest possible rating of ‘outstanding’ in the CQC inspection carried out in November 2018. Teams were praised for focusing on the individual needs of patients under exceptional circumstances and for their commitment to multi-disciplinary working. This CQC inspection rated Wexham Park Hospital as good overall. Safe, effective, caring and responsive were rated as good at Wexham Park, while well led was rated as outstanding. https://www.cqc.org.uk/provider/RDU The Trust Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT) is one of the largest Acute Trusts in the South East, formed from the merger of Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey with Heatherwood and Wexham Park in East Berkshire in 2014. The Trust provides inpatient services on three sites: Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot, Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and Frimley Park in Surrey. In addition, the Trust provides outpatient and diagnostic facilities at St Mark’s Hospital in Maidenhead, King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor, Upton Hospital in Slough and within Bracknell Forest and the Chalfont’s. Our Trust is a progressive trust with futuristic views. We are in the process of digitalising patient records and actively rolling out EPIC software for electronic patient records. Wexham Park Hospital (WPH) WPH, Slough, has 400 beds with a full range of services including a sub-regional plastic surgery unit. In the theatre complex there are 9 theatres and two obstetric theatres. The recently opened state-of-the-art Emergency Assessment Centre brings the emergency department, ambulatory care and surgical and medical assessment centres together under one roof. Heatherwood Hospital Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot is our elective surgery site with 62 beds for orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, vascular, breast, plastic surgery and gynaecology. There are 6 theatres including the day unit. There is a diagnostic imaging unit MRI and a CT scanner. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation are also on site. The construction work is nearing completion on a new £98m hospital in Heatherwood. It will be used for planned procedures and features six operating theatres, 48 inpatient beds and 22 day cubicles. The site is due for completion in 2021 and is expected to treat 168,000 patients a year. The Anaesthetic Department at Wexham Park Hospital The Anaesthetic Department (Wexham Park and Heatherwood sites) is staffed with 29 WTE consultants and 35 Specialty doctors and trainees. Our directorate has recently been awarded the ACSA accreditation by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. A new theatre complex at Wexham Park has six new and three upgraded theatres, including two obstetric theatres; this suite has a video-link to the John Lister Postgraduate Centre and has a seminar room and on call rooms within the complex. There is also an operating theatre located in the delivery suite, which has itself just been modernised. Obstetrics (Wexham Park Hospital) Wexham Park labour ward caters to a large, multicultural and multinational population. The unit attends to just under 5000 deliveries per year. The consultant- led labour ward has 10 delivery rooms plus a pool room. The Birthing Centre is a midwife-led birthing suite for low risk pregnancies. There are 2 dedicated emergency obstetric theatres and a special baby unit for those neonates requiring additional support. The obstetric anaesthetic department has 10 obstetric anaesthetists and provides 10 day-time Consultant led sessions, as well as an on-call service. The unit is staffed by senior trainees and staff doctors, often supervising more junior trainees. There is a weekly consultant led high risk antenatal anaesthetic clinic and a 24hr epidural service and provision of anaesthesia for any case occurring in labour ward theatre. There is provision for care of sick mothers on the labour ward, with support from the anaesthetic and outreach team. There is a consultant-led elective caesarean section lists on each weekday. We run a SimMOA (simulation for midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists) course throughout the year, which is a RCoA approved multi-disciplinary teaching session. The department has been approved for higher and advanced training in Obstetric Anaesthesia and is active in clinical research and audit. Trauma (Wexham Park Hospital) Wexham Park Hospital is a busy DGH trauma and orthopaedics centre and is part of the regional TARN (Trauma & Research Network). Wexham Park Hospital is a centre of excellence for outcomes in Fractured NOF patients. It is amongst the top 10 trusts in the country in outcomes and BPT (Best Practice Tariff) measures. Our adjusted mortality rate is well below national average. The service is covered by 8 Anaesthetic consultants along with trainees and SAS grade doctors. There are two dedicated trauma theatres including dedicated weekend theatre capacity supported with HDU/ICU and extended recovery facilities. The service is also complimented by 2 trauma nurse practitioners, a trauma co- Coordinator and a Ortho-geriatric consultant. There is a dedicated consultant led multidisciplinary Fractured NOF Network. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work along with the present consultant anaesthetists covering Trauma anaesthesia. There will be ample opportunities to participate in Quality improvement projects such as FIB (Fascia Iliaca Block) service setup. There will be opportunity for taking part and teaching in the WPH Regional Ultrasound course and teaching/training of trainees. Regional (Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals) There is a major focus to further the regional anaesthesia services in HWPH. Regional anaesthesia including nerve blocks is delivered to shoulder lists and plastic trauma cases. We have recently introduced the rectus sheath catheter service. Development of block room is in progress in line with the other sites. There is also an opportunity to get involved in the Wexham Regional anaesthesia course. Intensive Care (Wexham Park Hospital) There is a state of the art, purpose built 12 bedded intensive care unit; level 3 and level 2 beds can be used flexibly depending on demand. The unit admits over 750 patients per year of which 75-80% receive level 3 care. The mean APACHE score is 17. Full invasive facilities are available. The Unit is ICNARC registered and supports a part time audit nurse. There is a fully integrated Clinical Information system for Critical Care (Metavision). The Critical Care structure has recently been reviewed and modified to reflect cross- site (Wexham-Frimley) working to include a cross site Consultant ICU lead and Head of Nursing for Critical Care. The cross-site clinical governance meetings and MDT half-days are held regularly. The Posts The successful applicants will be expected to take part in developing services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department. Participation in clinical audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in both Departments. Clinical research projects are encouraged. These are full time 10 PA posts which include 1.5 PAs of SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003). In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director. Representative timetable/Job plan The proposed timetable and PA allocation are indicative of the work required but is not rigid and will be flexible depending on service needs and the base specialty of the applicant. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and Chief of Service on behalf of the Medical Director within three months of appointment. The job plan will then be reviewed annually and covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
