I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the development of this somewhat out of control idea. In particular I want to thank Brandon and Jason for being involved from the beginning and providing historical accuracy (Brandon) and guidance on tooling and approach (Jason), we would not be releasing this somewhat crazy think without you. I also want to say a special thanks to the three editors whose work was vital to this product, we were in your debt from the beginning and in particular the work of Stephanie in undertaking a sensitivity read through was vital. I want to express that this is purely a community thing, although I did get some vital and insightful feedback from Martin T at Free League, who reached out to offer some fantastic guidance. I also want to thank all of the play testers who got involved in the testing of the game, without you it would not exist as a supplement. In addition, we will examine the ways in which social practice, spiritual beliefs, and political strategies have been linked to folklore in Japan. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to: Identify key figures from folklore, and their characteristic features and behaviors, and explain why nearly all supernatural creatures have complex natures; Explain the roles played by certain animals in Japanese culture, and the changing attributes people have ascribed to them; Interpret the folk motifs in visual media, such as Japanese prints and anime; Interpret folktales from the perspectives of religious beliefs, social practice, and political ideology; Recognize similarities and differences between Japanese and European folktales with similar themes; Explain the symbolic meaning of social practices related to the relationship between the dead and the living; Understand the ways in which folklore has been strategically adapted to new contexts such as environmentalism and tourism promotion in the process of folklorism and town revitalization.

These books are supernatural bestiaries, collections of ghosts, spirits, spooks and monsters, many of which Toriyama based on literature, folklore, and other artwork. These works have had a profound influence on subsequent yōkai imagery in Japan. Konjaku Hyakki Shūi is preceded in the series by Gazu Hyakki Yagyō and Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki, and succeeded by Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro." (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konjaku Hyakki Shūi) Monster Recovery Effort is the result of a collaborative project completed on RPGGeek. Based on the images from the book, users of the RPGGeek forum created the descriptions collected here. Despite the influence of the source material in Japanese culture, Toriyama's prints are little known among RPG players from North America and Europe. His creatures haven't had the chance to bend, spindle, or mutilate player characters for too many years.
