Potentate’s Message My Noble Brothers,

The Cyprus Shrine Temple is coming along nicely. We are putting the finishing touches on the Kitchen. We are in the process of filling for a Club License for our Bar. This has all been possible through the hard work and determination of the Building Committee, the Divan members and many Noble Brothers .

Please come out and support your Divan and Cyprus Shrine as often as your time permits. Remember, Family first, Work second , Cyprus Shrine and Brotherhood Third!

When the Temple is complete, we will have a new home. Debt Free! A special Thanks to our Building Manager Rick Van Vorst for the outstanding job of constructing the Past Potentate’s Honor Role Plaques, with the name plates and year served, from 1877 to present . The finished product is a work of art! It is a Must See on your next trip to the Temple!

Another special Thanks to Assistant Rabban Robert Baker for taking on the arduous task of the Cyprus News, from layout to planning and publication. Bob stepped up with out hesitation to help out Cyprus. Still another special Thanks to Chief Rabban Dave Unser, High Priest and Prophet John Donato, Oriental Guide Chris Wessell, Treasurer Jim Pulver, and Recorder Ill. Karl Koch for their attention to detail of the big and small jobs, and their dedication to me and Cyprus Shrine. The heart felt support and brotherly love I have received from each and every Divan member on the everyday business has been tremendous. I am truly humbled!

The transition from the old temple to the new has been a monumental task. We are very happy to report our successes are far greater than we expected. We look forward to serving you with dedication, determination and humility. Thank you for all that you do.

With Love and Respect, Yours In The Faith, Illustrious Sir Tony Prizzia

Did You Know? King Kalakaua was the seventh ruler of the kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands and the only King to have also been Shriner . Because Honolulu’s Aloha Temple did not yet exist, King Kalakaua became a Noble Shriner of ’s Islam Temple in 1891. Aloha Temple, in Hawaii was established in 1901. PAGE 4 CYPRUS NEWS

As I've stated many times I believe the Clubs and Units are the heart and soul of Cyprus. As Chief Rabban I want to meet with the Presidents or their representatives in November to discuss our plans for 2018, needs, wants and expectations from the Club and Unit level as well as the Temple perspective. There will be information on this elsewhere in the newsletter. There are many events coming up for the remainder of this year including Potentate’s visits to Clubs, Ceremonial, Monster Raf- fle, Election of Officers and the Temple Christmas Party will be back this year. Check the back page for upcoming events and mark your calendars and plan on getting out to some of these events. Upcoming events are also listed on the calendar on The Cyprus App and website. As Chief Rabban, myself and the rest of the elected Divan are furiously planning for 2018. Illustrious Tony has been a pleasure to work with over the past few years and the elected Divan is in great shape to keep Cyprus moving forward for the next several years. I hope to see you at an event soon. Yours In The Faith, David M. Unser, Sr., Chief Rabban

Our Cyprus Temple Banner is now proudly displayed on the wall of the Dining Room. The banner is from the Arab Patrol and is dated 1890 on the back. Special thanks to Lady Pranit Prizzia for the expert stitching needed to restore our prized possession. Thank you Lady Pranit! CYPRUS NEWS PAGE 5

Schenectady Shrine Club News

Greetings from the club that promises fellowship and good times. Good times are what we had on June 28 with our annual Presidents’ Night when we honored the past Club presidents. We had a total of 12 past presidents attend the dinner. President Frank Karwowski presented each past president with a carnation for his lapel, and they assembled together for a group photo. The Club made a contribution to Shriners Hospi- tal in Springfield in honor of these dedicated nobles.

The winning ticket for the 50/50 raffle was drawn, and the winner of $60.00 was Ill.James Vooys, Poten- tate of Oriental and past Club president. As a new twist, we also held a drawing for a free dinner at our next meeting, and Lady Juli Vooys was the winner.

Another great event was our annual Mac Hadyn Theatre trip on July 8. About 20 Nobles and ladies saw “Saturday Night Fever,” and then enjoyed a nice meal afterward. Thanks as always to Noble and past Club president David C. Gonyea for making the arrangements as he has for every year of this summer event.

Plans are underway for the Potentates Night on October 4, 2017 at Canali’s Restaurant. This is the night when we honor the potentates of both Cyprus and Oriental Shrines. Mark your calendars now. Be sure to attend— it will be a good time as always.

Are you a member of the Schenectady Shrine Club? If not, you should be. All are welcome to join. Be a part of the fun. Contact the Secretary for an application today!

We had beautiful weather for our Temple Picnic again this year! Approximately 65 Nobles, Ladies and their families attended. There was plenty of food to be sure! Nobles Wayne Holt and Chris Wessell were manning the grill cooking hotdogs and hamburgers. Ribs, chicken and salads came later via our Greene County connection Noble Ray Brooks and Lady Rose. We can't forget the delicious dessert trays and of course no Shrine event would be complete without M&M’s both plain and peanut! It was great that our Potentate Illustrious Sir Tony and Lady Pranit drove up in their ’66 Lincoln Convertible complete with opera doors. The Divan had to pile in and take it for a ride and get some ice cream after the picnic. Our ladies certainly are patient! We had a few Past Poten- tates in attendance! Illus- trious Sirs Doc Deveneau, Ben Garry, Mike Derry, Paul Rosenblatt, Tom Leary and John Scott. It was great to see you and your ladies. Thank you for your support and dedica- tion to Cyprus Shrine. Thanks go out to our Di- van and Nobles who put the picnic together! A good time was had by all who attended. Thank you for all you do.

IMPERIAL POTENTATE'S MEMBERSHIP REFERRAL PROGRAM INTRODUCED

The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment – the successful creation of new members; retention – providing a program that keeps your current members active, engaged and involved; and restoration – restoring to active membership those members who have lost connection with the frater- nity. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations. As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Collaboration is essential, and we must all work together to promote successful and efficient membership processes. Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development, changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functional- ity, current nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners. Similar to beashrinernow.com, this new referral program is administered through WebFez (https://webfez.shrinenet.org/referral) and links the prospect with his referring noble, promoting natural mentorship based on a pre- existing friendship or acquaintance. The new process can be tracked and reported, and each referral triggers automatic communications to the referrer and the prospect. Once a noble makes a referral, he then receives tools and resources to mentor his prospect to creation or restoration. The program en- courages constant collaboration, so that everyone can share their Shrine with the good men around them.

Thirty nine Hillbillies and six- teen Flatlanders enjoyed Hamburgers and Hot Dogs from Noon to 2PM, at which time Cousins Jack Norray and Grover Lafountain held an auction of T & T (Treasurers and Trash) to raise money for the Shrine Hospitals and Cyprus Transportation Fund. At 3 PM we went up the holler and initiated 16 Flatlander in the ways of being a Hillbilly. The Clan then enjoyed a Chicken Barbeque prepared by the Tim Norray branch of the Clan. The Imperial session was held at Daytona Beach, Fla. It was a sight to be- hold, thousands of brothers with their red Fezzes all over the city. We had very busy schedules of meeting and voting on many issues of importance. Our very own Imperial Sir Kevin Costello moved up to Imperial Captain of the Guard for the following year.

Many of the hotels were right on the beach and on the sand. It was only a skip and a jump and you were in the ocean.

The following elected Divan members of Cyprus Shrine were in attendance, myself and Lady Pranit, Karl Koch and his Lady Betty, Dave Unser, Bob Baker, and John Donato. In addition 2 Past Potentates, Bob Zentner, and his Lady Pat, Ray Lucas and his Lady Alonka. Noble Cyprus Shriners Nick Furnari , and Antho- ny Prizzia Jr. , were also in attendance.

We made many memories and shared fellowship and brotherly love and a good time was had by all.
