The series is intended to target an academic audience interested in the following areas: – Traditional fields of humanities whose research paths are focused on issues of current concern; – New fields of humanities emerged to meet the demands of societal changes; – Multi/Inter/Cross/Transdisciplinary dialogues between humanities and social and/or natural sciences; – Humanities “in disguise”, that is, those fields (currently belonging to other spheres), that remain rooted in a humanistic vision of the world; – Forms of investigations and reflections, in which the humanities monitor and critically assess their scientific status and social condition; – Forms of research animated by creative and innovative humanities-based

Michigan Winter Tournament "The Holy Roman Empire of Tournaments" Edited by: Harris Bunker, Emmett Laurie, Evan Lynch, Matt Mitchell, Eric Mukherjee, Jacob O'Rourke, Rudra Ranganathan, Conor Thompson, Jeremy Tsai, and Chandler West Written by: The editors, Mollie Bakal, Austin Foos, Beverly Fu, Colton Graham, James Hadley, Sean Higgins, Tyler McMaken, Ameya Phadnis, Aleija Rodriguez, James Stevenson, and Allan VanZandt Packet 13 Tossups: 1. The narrator of one of this author's stories ponders a word he compares to "gnomon in the Euclid" or "simony in the Catechism" upon hearing of another character's death. Father Purdon's sermon comparing sins to verifying accounts ends that story by this author, in which Mr. Kernan is taken to a retreat upon tripping down the stairs drunk. The death of a character created by this author who frequents, the vaguely-named store Drapery, causes the narrator to contemplate the word (*) "paralysis." The Morkan sisters invite Bartell D'Arcy to perform at the central event of another story by this author. In that story by this author, the song "The Lass of Aughrim" was sung by Michael Furey when courting the wife of Gabriel Conroy. For 10 points, name this author, who included "Grace," "The Sisters," and "The Dead" in Dubliners. ANSWER: James Joyce <Laurie, British Literature> 2. One essay cited movie criticism as the greatest popularizer of this concept, and claims there is no character development in Il Trovatore. Andrew Bolton showed works of Jeremy Scott and Thierry Mulger in one exhibition for this concept, with sections dedicated to Ernest Boulton and Oscar Wilde.

Mus. Fort Stockton, Texas lay, 1952 'Wr " PREFACE The purpose of this study is to give some insight into the solo songs of John Alden Carpenter and show their position in the history of song composition in general. Although Carpenter has won wide acclaim,, little has been written about either the man or his music. His vocal music in particular has lacked the attention it merits, and it is hoped that this study will partially fill the lacuna. Of some eighty-one songs that Carpenter is known to have written, about seventy were published (see Appendix). Of these, forty-one are still in publication and have been available for this study. No attempt has been made to analyze each song.. Rather, have the general features of the songs been treated and supported by examples, char- acteristic as well as exceptional. The study of the songs themselves is preceded by two chapters on the history of solo song, and another containing a brief account of Carpenter's career. At the close are three appendixes, the first, a list of songs in order of composition; the second, a list of songs in order by author; and in the third, a list of instrumental works in order of composition. A bibliography of the available literature in books and periodicals will be found at the end.
