COLLEGE SONG, "BEN FRANKLIN, ESQ.. THE UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS ON NINTH STREET-1802-1872 Our Alma Mater

Historical research has shown that the foundation of the University of Pennsylvania is to be referred to the year 174o, thus making it the fourth, in point of age, among the educational institutions of the country. It should be remembered that the title Chas. J. Stille, LL. D. EX-PROVOST of " University " was first used in America in 1779, in connection with this institution.

When the Class of 75 entered the University, in the year 1871, the buildings were situated on the side of Ninth Street, between Chestnut and Market Streets. The value of the lands, buildings and endowment, at that time, may be estimated at less than $1,000,000. The members of the teaching force numbered 41, and the students in all departments 718.

Dr. William Pepper

EX-PROVOST A rapid growth and development of this time-honored institution commenced at about that time, when it obtained from the city a large tract of land at Thirty-fourth and Walnut Streets. The erection of buildings was commenced on this site, and the University re removed to its new home moved in 1872. It now owns fifty-two acres of land in a continuous tract, and the value of lands, buildings and endow endowments may be safely ments es timated at over $5,000,000. Reference to the Catalogue of the University for 1894-5 shows that the officers of instruction number 273, while the students have reached a total of 2398, thus ranking Pennsylvania the third largeststitution educational in stitution in the country. Mr. C. C. Harrison ACTING PROVOST As members of the Class of 75, after twenty years of busy life since graduation, let us, tonight, turn our thoughts to old "Pennsylvania" and offer our sincere congratulations THE LIBRARY BUILDING and good wishes to our Alma Mater. Farewell Song of 75 by Sidney Castle, Class poet Comrades, at length the day O voices of the past, Has faded most away, Though years may gather fast, When we are met together Ye never shall be drowned Unitedly to weather While echoing the sound A common course. Farewell, the bells are ringing! Of celebrations in the days of yore. No longer shall we dare Yea, though those times are over, A common fate, nor share And 75 a rover, The music in the chorus Yet still, ah still, above her, That rang before time tore us Will light of memory hover : Apart : new duties, new adventures bringing, A spirit band, on earth we part no more.

ode to 75 by Sterling Morrison 0 thou sweet muse, divine, Oh, let thy honored name Inspire my heart: Ever endure! Here, at thy classic shrine, Crowned with immortal fame, Breath of thy soul in mine Alien to thought of shame, Thy power impart. Stainless and pure !

List, brothers, while I sing Fresh as the flowers of Spring My class the song. Memories throng, Loud let thy praises ring, Joyous of thee I sing Brilliant in everything Proudly my homage bring, life to they lone_ Fervent and strong. Oh, let the thought of the Cheer me at heart Sharp tho lifes trials be, Soon as all else may flee, Never depart In Memoriam In Memorian
