WHO ARE the REBELS? ‘The Rebels’ Is an Independent Co‐Ed Cheerleading Team Based in Cheras, KL The REBELS WHO ARE THE REBELS? ‘The Rebels’ is an independent co‐ed cheerleading team based in Cheras, KL. The founders of the team were members from Extreme Malaysia All Stars (Team EMAS – formerly known as Team All Stars of Malaysia). Having trained with Team EMAS for a year, several members decided to branch off to form a new team. A mutual understanding was reached between Team EMAS and the founders of ‘The Rebels’, which led to the formation of the new team. We still continue to work with Team EMAS on occasion, maintaining friendly relations. The Rebels have engaged in performances for various events and we have also participated in several cheerleading competitions. The team’s debut was made at the Charm Cheerleading Championships 2007, which was held at Cineleisure Damansara and the team’s latest accomplishment had just recently occurred in the Charm Cheerleading Championships 2009 in March. ‘The Rebels’ walked away with first, second and third places in the local group stunts category, and second place in the local cheer dance category. Our team currently comprises of 20 energetic members between 14 and 25 years of age. WHAT ARE OUR HOPES? As a cheerleading team, we aspire to encourage the growth of the sport in Malaysia and hopefully, to promote healthy competition among teams outside of secondary school as well. We also hope to provide the option of a healthy pastime for young adults where not only are they able to maintain physical fitness but also to help build character and promote sportsmanship. Our ultimate goal, however, is to see Malaysian cheerleaders prove themselves to be formidable contenders in the sport at the international level and we, The Rebels, hope to be the catalyst in producing these world‐class cheerleaders. WHERE IS OUR TRAINING GROUND? Our training sessions are held in StarJump Gymnastics Centre, a privately owned gymnastics centre in Cheras, and we have access to proper equipment as well as the assurance of shelter from unpredicted weather conditions. WHO COACHES THE REBELS? Coach: Leng Kim Swee Personal Background: Mr. Leng Kim Swee has actively participated in the sports of artistic gymnastics, professional rope skipping and sports aerobics since his secondary school years. Nichols Professor of Mass Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This study examines how socio-political blogs contribute to the development of democracy in Malaysia. It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.

  • Bishop's Place in Najib's Team to Vatican Unseemly Malaysiakini.Com July 11, 2011
Bishop's place in Najib's team to Vatican unseemly Malaysiakini.com July 11, 2011 COMMENT In the wake of grave developments on the political front, the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Murphy Pakiam must give serious thought to the propriety of his being part of the delegation that will be led by Prime Minister Najib Razak for a visit to Pope Benedict XVI on July 18. Political developments in the country, especially in connection with the controversial Bersih march, affect the credibility of the Najib administration in ways the Catholic community cannot be indifferent to. Hence the titular head of Catholics in the archdiocese of KL, the biggest in the country, cannot remain unconcerned about these developments, not only because of their weightiness but also for their connection to matters of deep concern to practitioners of the faith. The PM's call on Pope Benedict at the latter's summer residence outside Rome has been reported as foreshadowing the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Malaysia. But sources say the visit has more to do with Pope Benedict's desire to promote Christian-Muslim dialogue than with the setting up of diplomatic ties. It appears the PM's Department would like to put the most favourable spin on the visit - as presaging the establishment of ties. With a general election on the cards, it is said that news of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Vatican would draw good vibes from the nation's 850,000 Catholics, a community whose political awareness makes it highly sensitive to the delicacy of its position in a Muslim-dominant nation.

  • Najib Launches Warisan Merdeka Project
Najib launches Warisan Merdeka project BY TASHNY SUKUMARAN Wednesday, 16 March 2016 | MYT 9:09 PM Najib (second from right) looks at a scale model of the Warisan Merdeka project. PETALING JAYA: An iconic new Malaysian landmark is on the horizon with the launch of Warisan Merdeka by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. The mega-tower mixed development project will be undertaken by Permodalan Nasional Berhad on a 19-acre piece of land and is expected to be completed by 2024. An 118-storey tower and a shopping mall, with a gross development value of RM5bil promises to be a "new landmark" in Kuala Lumpur and the tallest tower in Malaysia at 630m, over 100m taller than the Petronas Twin Towers which stands at 451.9m. It will also be the second tallest tower in Asia and fifth in the list of "mega-tall" buildings globally. In his speech, Najib said that iconic buildings "helped to define a city" as they "make a compelling statement about its history". He also said that Warisan Merdeka would complement and enhance the historically important sites of Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara, both of which are also owned by PNB. Najib said that it would also generate both primary and secondary economic spin-off, and "add to KL's attractiveness as an investment and tourism destination." Najib also renamed the tower as "Merdeka PNB118". Present at the launch was PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid and PNB president and group chief executive Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman Hamad. The building will hold a 6-star luxury hotel with 236 rooms, a sky lobby, and 82 floors of offices.
