  • Story of the Alfa Romeo Factory and Plants : Part 1 the Early Portello
Story of the Alfa Romeo factory and plants: Part 1 The early Portello Factory Patrick Italiano Special thanks go to Karl Schnelle, Indianapolis, USA, for his patient proofreading and editing of the English version of this text Over the last few years, we have had to deal with large changes in Alfa Romeo-related places and buildings, as we witnessed the destruction of the old Portello factory, step by step in the late 80s, and also the de-commissioning of the much more modern Arese plant. Sad tales and silly pictures of places and people once full of pride in manufacturing the most spirited cars in the world. As reported by historians, it has long been – and still is for few – a source of pride to belong to this “workers aristocracy” at A.L.F.A.. Places recently destroyed to make place for concrete buildings now containing commercial centres or anonymous offices, places where our beloved cars were once designed, developed and built. It’s often a mix of curiosity and thrill to have the chance to look behind the scenes and see into the sanctuary. Back in 1987, when the first part of Portello was being torn down, Ben Hendricks took us on a visit to the Portello plant in Het Klaverblaadje #40. That was, as Jos Hugense coined the title 15 years later, the “beginning of the end”. Today, one can see Alfas running on the Fiat assembly lines along with Fiat Stilos and at best Lancia Thesis. These Fiat plants are no longer the places where distinguished and passionate brains try to anticipate technical trends five years into the future, thus ensuring that the new generation of Alfas keep such high company standards, as Ing.

CHAPTER 5 suggested citation: Medrano-Bigas, Pau. The Forgotten Years of Bibendum. Michelin’s American Period in Milltown: Design, Illustration and Advertising by Pioneer Tire Companies (1900-1930). Doctoral dissertation. University of Barcelona, 2015 [English translation, 2018]. THE TROJAN HORSE: IMPORTED AUTOMOBILES In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the furor for bicycles as a personal and economical means of transport led to the invasion of the French market by English and American firms—leading to fierce commercial competition with the country’s own industries—resulting in the collapse of 1898. In the early stages of the new century the full development of the European automobile industry and in particular the French sector—with the inseparable development of the tire—produced a similar effect. However, this time it was the American market that was invaded by imported European vehicles, pre- dominantly from France. 1. Transatlantic travel on wheels Between 1890 and 1891 the first French vehicles marketed by Peugeot—one of the major bicycle manu- facturers—and Panhard et Levassor, appeared on the scene and incorporated the internal combustion engine developed by the German Gottlieb Daimler. French and German investments in technology, which would be imposed on the rest, was based on gasoline-powered engines and collided with the English and North American options, diversified between vapor, electric and gas-powered automobiles. Production data from the United States in 1899 show that there were 2,500 vehicles—about 80% of which used electric or steam engines—manufactured by around 30 companies. Between 1900 and 1901, France was by far the world’s largest automobile producer.

  • TECNICHE E TECNOLOGIE INNOVATIVE NELLE VETTURE ITALA Conferenza Di Carlo Otto Brambilla Milano, 8 Ottobre 1994 Museo Nazionale Della Scienza E Della Tecnologia
Grazie a tutti.

Patents, exhibitions and markets for innovation in the early twentieth century: Evidence from Turin 1911 International Exhibition Giacomo Domini* Abstract. This work contributes to the recent literature on international exhibitions, and on the use of data from these events as a proxy for innovation in economic history. In particular, it investigates the nature of international exhibitions, the role they played in the early twentieth century, the reasons why economic agents attended them, the relationship between exhibition data and patent data, and their suitability for measuring innovation. To do so, it makes an in-depth analysis of the International Exhibition held in Turin in 1911, and it matches a new database, built from the catalogue of this event, with data about patents granted in Italy. It is found that exhibiting and patenting did mostly occur separately, as exhibitions mainly worked as markets for products, which attracted firms, while patents were primarily taken out by individuals, most of whom might not be interested in that function.

Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.

  • Body Vehicle Design Process
Appendix A Body Vehicle Design Process The purpose of this appendix is to provide the reader with an overview of product development technology and, in particular, of the role that computers play in it. To keep the size of this appendix within reasonable limits, our attention is concen- trated on the car body only. The reason for this choice is that the car body has some peculiar aspects and features that make it different from that of the other car subsystems, since the body is designed keeping in mind not only its technical characteristics and production technologies, but also the aesthetic characteristics of its ‘style’, which plays a fun- damental role in determining the commercial success of a car. From a technical standpoint, a conventional steel body includes the body shell and trimming which are primarily made by thin-wall elements, whose external surface performs usually aesthetic functions; this fact alone justifies peculiar engineering techniques. These thin sheet elements of complex shape required the development of particular representation rules, that are different from those used for mechanical components (engine, transmission, suspensions, etc.), and that are limited to a few views and sections, aimed to keep the representation as simple as possible. A further specific characteristic is related to the high capital investments needed to mass produce the vehicle body, with respect to its relatively short production life, usually limited to a few years. The body shell and trimming are totally revised at each new model launch, i.e. every 5 ÷ 7 years on average, and this contrasts with what happens with many other components, invisible to the customer, that may be reused with only incremental improvements on next generation models.

It was won by Prince Scipione Borghese driving a 40 hp Itala, taking 62 days including a catalogue detour to St Petersburg to attend a ball! 99 years later, the Mercedes-Benz E-class Experience retraced the route in reverse, running 30 new generation E320 CDI series production turbo diesel models and three E320 BLUETEC models. The route crossed nine countries and six time zones, with climatic changes along the way. Starting in Paris, the main stops were at St Petersburg in Russia; Yekaterinburg in Siberia and Almaty in Kazakhstan, before picking up the legendary Silk Road across China to Beijing. The vehicles each covered 13,600 km (that’s a total of more than 450,000 km) in just 26 days. A total of 330 drivers took part, comprising Mercedes-Benz customers, journalists, taxi drivers and celebrities. The objective was to demonstrate the comfort, reliability and fuel efficiency of the E-class and to celebrate the start of local production in Beijing. Mercedes-Benz claims that the E320 BLUETEC has the cleanest diesel engine in the world and consumes 20 to 40% less fuel than comparable petrol-engined vehicles. It has been launched in the USA and should reach European showrooms in 2008. The BTN Turbo catalogue has continually been an industry leader with its easy to use, wide- ranging information that enables users to It’s official - driving makes us miserable recognise the turbocharger they need, quickly and accurately.
