Delicate patterns and intricate details reveal themselves if you look beyond the mesmerizing striations of the facade, created using carefully- laid bricks in two tones. Elaborate patterns trim the roof like the finest lace by Bernt Rostad and sculpted ornaments hide in niches, while the window tracery charms with its symmetric grace. Inside, elegant columns draw the eyes upward and to the front where stained glass windows cast colorful shadows across the floor and vivid paintings in pleasing hues illustrate excerpts from the Bible. Built in the late-19th Century and named after King Oscar II, the Oscar Fredrik Church still attracts many an admiring glance and awed gaze. Because of its height and location, Masthuggskyrkan offers some of the best views of Gothenburg city, and the two massive bells it houses weigh a mammoth by Arild Vågen three and two tons respectively. The interiors combine Viking-style ornamental facades with Christian symbolism. The acoustics in the church are wonderful; if you whisper down by the door you can be heard all the way to the altar. The study can be discerned with two moments. The first part unfolds Vallgravsstråket’s obscure historical legibility by looking into the subject’s conditional processes of creating/producing heritage with focus on Vallgravsstråket’s local identity and place-based memory. The second part of the thesis focuses on the area’s opera- tive practicality by studying the consequences of constructing a footbridge over Vall- gravsstråket with the help of a morphological analysis. A recurring question involves understanding what makes up Vallgravsstråket and why it is important to preserve it and, for whom. Along these lines, it has been interesting to identi- fy an inconsistent gap between how the area is currently represented, what is commonly stated in legally binding documents and, how the local users evaluate the area.

    Gothenburg and Canterbury The Church of England, the English Congregation in Gothenburg, & the Church of Sweden. A talk for St Andrew’s Week 2007 What is the Church of England doing in Sweden? Originally, the answer was: providing a place of worship, in the English language and in the established tradition, for British subjects living in and around Stockholm and Gothenburg. And though never primarily a mission to seamen (unlike the Danish and Norwegian churches here), that has also been part of our function from time to time. Today, the focus has shifted, and church membership, once limited to those who were British by birth, descent or marriage, is now truly international. But we are part of the Church of England, not only of the wider Anglican Communion, as members of the Church of England Diocese in Europe. On my installation as Priest-in-Charge of St Andrew‟s, I was required to swear to “pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe and his successors in all things lawful and honest” – though, unlike the priest- in-charge of an English parish I was not, on that occasion, required to swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II. I shall look at the history of this chaplaincy, and of its connections with the churches of England and Sweden, and then discuss some of the challenges for the future. The Right to Worship1 In Sweden as in England, the course of the Reformation fluctuated under successive monarchs. The result in Sweden was a state church clearly identified with the Lutheran tradition, while the Church of England continued to work its way to what would eventually be called “Anglican”, influenced by followers of both Luther and Calvin but declaring allegiance to neither.

    Göran Grottling – A Swedish Cousin on the Larsson Side of My Family by Burks Oakley II 10 August 2018 Introduction My younger daughter, Amy Oakley, has always had an interest in science, and more generally, in biology. She zealously reads every issue of National Geographic from cover to cover, and she has a collection of National Geographic magazines going back over 60 years. When the National Geographic Society started its Genographic DNA project1 in 2005, Amy said that we both should participate. That was my introduction to DNA testing. Sometime after 23andme.com began doing DNA testing in 2006, Amy submitted her DNA sample to them, and then kept hounding me to do so as well – which I eventually did. I’m really glad that I listened to her, since I now am hooked on genetic genealogy. My mother’s four grandparents all were Swedes who immigrated to America in the 1880’s. So ethnically she was 100% Swedish, which means that I am 50% Swedish. In the past few years, I have become very interested in my Swedish ancestry, and I have found a number of Swedish relatives with whom I have a DNA match. I’m very fortunate that I’ve been able to visit many of these people on my recent trips to Sweden. This narrative goes back to the very first Swedish cousin that I made contact with through our DNA match on 23andme.com – Göran Grottling. His first name is pronounced “Yore-on”, with the emphasis on the first syllable. 1 The Genographic Project, launched on April 13, 2005 by the National Geographic Society, is an ongoing genetic anthropological study that aims to map historical human migration patterns by collecting and analyzing DNA samples.

Having checked that it was just possible to travel there and back between a church committee meeting and the following Sunday’s service, I agreed to go, and looked forward to my first visit to the is- land of Gotland. The link with Visby comes about because that diocese is responsible for the Church of Sweden’s overseas chaplaincies, and there is an interim link between our dioceses.
