Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon MEDIA GUIDE 2019 Uppdated 2019-05-13 Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon MEDIA GUIDE 2019 A world-class racing event promoting a healthy lifestyle and offering a great atmosphere 40 years! It’s been 40 years since the start of the Göteborgsvarvet! There have been an unbelievable number of people involved in different ways with the Göteborgsvarvet through the years and over a million runners have crossed the finish line in Slottsskogsvallen since 1980. So that means we are celebrating a little extra this year! Göteborgsvarvet’s alumni, those that have ran 30 or more races, are going to be celebrated with a special start group this year and in this group are the 60 runners that have participated in every race since the start 40 years ago. The course will have musicians all along the way and we want everyone to pay special attention at the beginning of the race because there is going to be a surprise for both the runners and spectators. As the race turns 40 years old this year, we are still continuing to develop and improve in many aspects. This past winter was the premiere of Running Talks, an inspirational day where the Göteborgsvarvet, along with experts and well-known names in running talked about the secret and meaning of running and its future. In collabora- tion with local associations throughout Sweden, we’ve arranged Varvetmilen which is a 10k race to improve your seeding for the Göteborgsvarvet. These races had a record number this year with over 8,000 people participating. Participants have now seeded to a start group that is more appropriate for their pace. Our plan is to continue making the week of the Göteborgsvar- vet a week of festivities for the entire family. New for this year is the Thule Stroller Jog where even the youngest family member can join their parents in this particular race. We’ve also made Yoga Run its very own race and event with the start at the same time as the Cityvarvet. The fact that physical activity helps improve the learning process is scientifically proven, so we are happy to an- nounce that the digital math teacher Albert is covering the entry fee for all participants in the Mini-Varvet, Lilla Varvet and Cityvarvet. This offer applies to all runners under the age of 18. Also everyone that runs with Albert receives a free monthly trial with unlimited math help. Sustainability is a top priority for us and you may already know the Göteborgsvarvet has been certified according to the standard ISO 20121 since 2015, which includes environmental, economic and social sustainability. A sus- tainable activity that we are putting extra focus on this year to keep the city clean is “plogging”, which is running and picking up trash. This will take place directly after the race. During the race there will be specific trash zones before the runners go over both bridges. Furthermore, we are working with 8 charity organizations this year, twice as many as last year. We also have several new sponsors making their debut this year. We are happy to present Boozt.com and New Balance as new members in our quartet of main partners. Our existing partners are Göteborgs Energi and ÅF. Gö- teborgsvarvet is a big spring event and it is the spectators, music and activities along the course that contribute to a successful event. Furthermore, there will be an exciting elite race, with international elite runners and the Swedish runners competing for the Swedish Championship medals. If you are not able to follow the race in person then you can follow it live on gp.se between 12:30-7:30 pm. Mix Megapol (local radio station) is going to be sending live throughout the whole day. On the following pages you’ll find facts about the Göteborgsvarvet that we hope will assist you in your work. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Contact information to our press service can be found on page 4 in this Media Guide. FINALLY IT’S TIME FOR THE 40TH EDITION OF THIS YEAR’S LARGEST RUNNING EVENT. April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.
