C. A. MACARTNEY STUDIES ON THE EARLIEST HUNGARIAN HISTORICAL SOURCES. 1. The Lives ol St. Gerard. I. The Lives of St. Gerard contain some of the most interesting material extant in any form, not only on the history of Hungary in the 11th century, but on the missionary work and organisation of the Church during the same period. We can, however, only make use of this information to the extent to which we are satisfied of its authenticity and antiquity; and on that point, unfortunately, distinguished scholars have expressed grave doubts. The present essay constitutes an attempt to re-examine these disputed ques tions in the light of certain new considerations. It also suggests what effect the conclusions to which it arrives may have on the answers to be given to certain enigmas in Hungarian history. The Life of St. Gerard has come down to us in two versions: a Vita Minor1 and a Vita Major.2 Of these, the Vita Minor is a comparatively straightforward piece of work. It mentions briefly Gerard's origin (c. 1); his arrival in Hungary and his detention there by St. Stephen, followed by his retirement for 7 years to the hermitage of Bél (c. 2) ; his appointment as bishop to Marosvár and foundation there of the Church of St. George (c. 3) ; the endowment of and ceremonials in that church (c. 4) ; details of the Saint's holy life (cc. 5— 7) ; his sermon against Samuel Aba (cc. 8—9) ; his pro phecies of coming trouble (c. 10); his martyrdom (c. 11); his sub sequent reburial in Marosvár (c. -

This Paper Discusses a Special Aspect of the Papal-Hungarian Relations
This paper discusses a special aspect of the Papal-Hungarian relations, the emergence of the canonical regulations in the archbishop and bishop elections in the Hungarian church from the late twelfth century. The study focuses on the actions of the popes regarding those elections. Furthermore, it examines how the regulations of the canon law influenced the situation in Hungary, and in which cases and under what circumstances the members of the cathedral-chapters, or the suffragan-bishops turned to the Apostolic See in cases of disputed elections. The paper also inquires into the role the Hungarian rulers played in the elections of the thirteenth century and looks at how they managed to help their candidates to receive the offices they sought. A further focus is on the question of whether there were significant clashes between ecclesiastical and lay power, sacerdotium and regnum in thir- teenth century-Hungary and whether the elections really were a source of conflict between the popes and the Hungarian kings. Lastly, the paper identifies and analyzes which tenden- cies existed until the outset of the fourteenth century regarding the above-mentioned ques- tions, and, because a comparative approach is also necessary, evaluates these tendencies in light of the situation in other regions of Western Christendom. Ein besonderer Aspekt der päpstlich-ungarischen Beziehungen war die Rolle, die die Päpste und die ungarischen Herrscher bei der Besetzung von (Erz-) Bistümern im 13. Jahrhundert spielten. MISCELÁNEA De Medio Aevo ISSN-e: 2255-5889 The Mongol domination and the detachment of the Romanians of Walachia from the domination of the Hungarian Kingdom1 Alexandru Madgearu2 Recibido: 13/07/2018 / Aceptado: 02/08/2018 / Publicado: 15/08/2018 Abstract: The expansion of Hungary outside the Carpathians, a process which involved colonization and military presence, was stopped at the middle of the 13th century by the Golden Horde domination over this area. The Mongol domination allowed the development of small Romanian political organizations ruled by voievodes or cnezi, in the region east of Olt, while west of Olt the Hungarian domination survived in certain forms until 1291, when a new offensive extended along the Danube, up to Serbia, the domination of the Isaccea emirate ruled by Nogai. In northern Oltenia, the voievode Litovoi tried in 1278 to liberate his land from the Hungarian vassalage, and to extend it east of Olt. The Golden Horde hegemony provided stability, being a condition for the establishment of the first Romanian state in northern Walachia. The legendary founder Negru Vodă came from the Transylvanian (Făgăraş area) with his military suite in 1290, after the confiscation of their properties. 1 THE GESTA HUNGARORUM OF ANONYMUS, THE ANONYMOUS NOTARY OF KING BÉLA A TRANSLATION by Martyn Rady Introduction The Gesta Hungarorum of the Anonymous Notary of King Béla is the oldest extant chronicle of the history of the Hungarians. It remains ‘the most famous, the most obscure, the most exasperating and most misleading of all the early Hungarian texts.’1 Purporting to be an account of the background, circumstances and immediate aftermath of the Hungarian conquest of Pannonia in the late ninth century, it was most probably composed in the early years of the thirteenth century by a chancellery clerk who had formerly been in the service of King Béla III of Hungary (1172-1196). The extant version, which survives in a late thirteenth century copy, is apparently incomplete.2 The sole MS, consisting of 24 folios, was first noted in the library of Schloss Ambras, outside Innsbruck, in the seventeenth century, from where it was moved to Vienna in 1665, and much later, in 1928, to Budapest.3 Although details of the MS were included in two printed seventeenth-century catalogues of the imperial library, its text was not published until 1746.4 Between then and the end of the nineteenth century, the MS was re-published more than a dozen times.5 A scholarly edition, with critical annotation, was first published by Gyula Pauler and László Fejérpataky in 1900,6 and a revised edition by Emil Jakubovich and Dezső Pais in the first volume of Imre Szentpétery’s Scriptores Rerum Hungaricarum (2 vols, 2 Budapest, 1937; hereafter, SRH).7 The Latin text has been translated several times into Hungarian, most notably by Pais,8 as well as into Romanian and German.9 What follows is the first rendering of the Latin text into English.
