Meals and snacks will be served on the plane. Day 2**Nov 7 Fukuoka Upon our arrival at Fukuoka International Airport, we will meet with an Air and Sea Travel representative who will escort us to our hotel. Fukuoka is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the southern end of Kyushu Island. Fukuoka was ranked as the 12th most livable city in May 2012 for its green spaces in a metro- politan setting. Day 3**Nov 8 Fukuoka – Beppu (B, L, D) After enjoying breakfast, we will transfer to Yufuin, the most popular Onsen Town for Japanese females. We can feel the small old town atmosphere as we walk along the streets to buy local snacks and souvenirs. After lunch, we will visit the Hells of Beppu, the nationally designated "Place of Scenic Beauty" in the onsen town of Beppu. The "hells" are for viewing rather than bathing. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion, which might not appeal to everybody. After enjoying our stroll in Beppu, we will trans- fer to our onsen hotel for tonight. Beppu Hot Spring is a hot spring with acidic sulfur and is highly known to have heath benefits as an Eastern medicine and treatment method. Also equipped with a popular mud bath, the white water hot spring is said to be good for neuralgia, rheumatism, and skin disorders. Day 4**Nov 9 Beppu – Miyazaki – Kirishima (B, L, D) Today, we will drive to Miyazaki Prefecture, located on the eastern coast of Kyushu, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. After lunch, we will visit Aoshima-jinja Shrine. Aoshima is a small island, spanning a mere 1.5km in circumference, and is surrounded by a bedrock that has been worn away by the waves into abstract shapes that look like giant washboards, known as the Devil’s Washboard. The Aoshima Shrine is a popular venue for couples as it supposedly offers a divine blessing, particularly to those who plan to marry. After that, we will transfer to Kirishima, an active volcanic mountain range that lies on the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures. It is made up of mountains, highlands, volcanic lakes and hot springs and offers good hiking through beautiful mountainous surroundings. Tonight, enjoy a Kaiseki dinner in the hot spring hotel. The water minerals of Kirishima Hot Spring are absorbed through the skin, carried throughout the body, and act on the muscles, cells, and nervous system. They warm up the body, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain and enhancing metabolism. Day 5**Nov 10 Day trip to Kagoshima (B, L, D) Today, we will have a day trip to Kagoshima, voted Japan's friendliest city nationwide. It is proud of its past as capital of the feudal Satsuma province, which holds an important place in Japanese history. First, we will tour Kakuida Kurozu Factory. Kurozu is black vinegar produced from unpolished rice and uses the tsubo-dzukuri (jar-making) method in Fukuyama Town. Sakurajima is the most active composite volcano, formerly an island and now a peninsula, in Kagoshima Prefecture. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption con- nected it with the Ōsumi Peninsula. We will have a boat ride along the port to view the Mountain. After lunch, we will visit the Honbo Shuzo Shochu Distillery "Galleria Hombo" to see the old-fashioned shochu brewing process. Senganen Garden is also known as Isoteien, a Japanese style landscape garden located on the coastline north of downtown Kagoshima. The garden cleverly borrows scenery from Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay, harmonizing with the landscapes inside the garden to become one of the most striking features of Senganen. The garden has been used as a filming location for the well-known Japanese TV drama, Princess Atsu. In November, the Chrysanthemum Festival will be held in this Garden. Tonight, we will return to our onsen hotel and enjoy the buffet dinner at the hotel. Day 6**Nov 11 Kirishima – Kumamoto – Fukuoka (B, D) Suizenji Garden is a Japanese garden located in Kumamoto. The park was named after a no-longer-extant Buddhist temple called Suizen-ji, and now hosts the Izumi Shrine, where members of the Hosokawa family are enshrined. The garden has been declared a historic site of scenic beauty by the national government. After that, we will transfer to Josaien, a popular tourist attraction designed to enhance the appeal of the old castle town and convey to visitors the food, history and cultural traditions of the region. We can enjoy our own lunch here before returning to Fukuoka. On the way, we will have a one hour boat ride on Yanagawa River in a gondola-like Donko boat and enjoy scenic views of Yanagawa City. Yanagawa City flourished as a castle town under the Tachibana clan and is also famous as the home town of renowned tanka poet Kitahara Hakushu. After dinner, we will check-in to our hotel in Fukuoka. Day 7**Nov 12 Fukuoka (B) In the morning, we will proceed to Dazaifu Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine built over the grave of Michizane Sugawara, respected by the Japanese as the Tenman-Tenjin (the deified spirit of Michizane), or the God of liter- ature or calligraphy. The shrine is also known for its 6,000 ume (Asian plum) trees including 167 varieties. One of the trees, known as Tobiume, stands directly to the right of the main hall. Legend has it that after Michizane was exiled from Kyoto, he yearned so much for this tree that it uprooted itself and flew to Dazaifu Tenman-gū. This is the most popular shrine in Kyushu on New Year’s Day. A Hakata doll is a traditional Japanese clay doll, originally from the city of Fukuoka, part of which was previously named Hakata before the city merger in 1889. Today, we can paint our own doll to experience this traditional cultural activity. Then, we will enjoy shop- ping at Canal City Hakata, a large shopping and entertainment complex located in Fukuoka Prefecture that calls itself a "city within the city". Day 8**Nov 13 Fukuoka (B, D) Today, we will enjoy the highlight of the trip by attending a Sumo Wrestling Match. Sumo is a Japanese style of wrestling and Japan's national sport. It originated in ancient times as a performance to entertain the Shinto deities. There are six sumo tournaments held each year, and the Kyushu tournament is the last one of the year. Let us enjoy this special and exciting event. A farewell dinner will be arranged for tonight. Day 9**Nov 14 Fukuoka Honolulu (B) After breakfast, we can explore the city in the morning on our own until we transfer to Fukuoka Airport for our return flight to Honolulu, taking with us lasting memories of this wonderful Sumo Wrestling in Kyushu tour.
