Information Stray Animals

Any animal that comes into the shelter without identification is held for a period 4 business days, or 7 business days if they have some identification (such as microchip, tatto0 or license/ID tags) per Michigan State Law of 1919. Once the stray holding time is completed, the animal becomes the property of Oakland County Animal Control and is processed through a veterinarian & behavioral check for adoption. The animal will be updated on vaccines, spay/neutered and tested for heartworm (in ) and FIV/FeLuk (in cats) prior to being adopted. Once the animal is adopted, all adoptions are final.

Finding a Lost or Missing

The Oakland Pet Adoption Center is committed to reuniting lost with their families and providing a temporary safe haven for animals until they can be placed into their forever homes. It is important to note that breeds can be interpreted differently and collars/tags can be lost, so it is very imperative to physically visit your animal control/shelter to personally identify your lost pet. When coming to identify your pet, please bring proper proof of ownership.

If your pet is missing, it is your responsibility to search for them, so please be diligent. The Oakland Pet Adoption Center cares for approximately 6,000 animals per year and requires that you visit in person to look for your pet.

Other tips for looking for a lost pet:

1. Call your local animal control or police to alert them of your missing pet.

2. Get moving! Search your neighborhood and talk with your neighbors. Post flyers to make as many aware as possible about your lost pet.

3. Visit your shelter daily! Animals come into the shelter at all hours, so visit your local shelter as often as possible/

Tips to keep your pet safe and at home:

1. Keep two forms of identification on your pet at all times. This can be a County license, identification tag, or microchip.

2. Spay or neuter your pet can be preventative in decreasing their likelihood to roam. According to Spay Inc. Organization, animals are less likely to run away or get involved in animal fights once they are spay/neutered, and also can become calmer. 3. Keep cats indoors and dogs on a leash when going outside for a walk.

Things can happen in a split instant, but being prepared will help keep your pet at home and out of the shelter.
