December 12, 2008 Class Room Close-ups

By: Art Teacher, Mrs. Chaya Shinensky Volume V Issue 9

Educate each child according to his way- Proverbs  - חנוך לנער על פי דרכו The theme for this year’s visual arts Torah school dinner presentation was chosen to reflect the individuality of each Torah School student as expressed through his or her art work. Each grade worked on a project, creating a variation of a self-portrait. The school murals were created using a variety of art media including: clay, metal, fabric or collage. In art class, the students explored the concepts of symmetry, proportion and texture in the art-making process. The concept of the mural reflects the idea that each individual child contributes to a larger more beautiful picture of the Jewish people.

Grade Project Descriptions: To introduce the idea of symmetry, the kindergarten and first grade classes looked at various shapes and, together, determined which ones had symmetry. We also talked about things found in nature that are symmetrical. To explore the concept of texture, students were invited to participate in a game. They pulled various textures from a ‘touch box’ and described them to the class without revealing the object. The Kindergarten Students created self-portraits using a variety of materials on felt. To reinforce the concept of symmetry students created symmetrical watercolor pictures by painting on half of a paper and then folding it, creating a symmetrical pattern, (which often looked like butterflies!)They also made textured leaf rubbings which they then used as bodies for leaf people (reinforcing the concept of symmetry in our bodies). The 1st grade classes created collages of themselves using various textures including, buttons, pipe cleaners, foam shapes and markers. The Students also drew self-portraits including their entire body. We focused on symmetry and proportion, trying to compare the size of different parts of our body. Students also made symmetrical self-portraits using water colors. (The Kindergarten and 1st grade projects were combined, to create a textured fabric mural for the school.) The 2nd grade classes created the dinner centerpieces: collaged tea light lamps using various textures including: yarn and tissue paper for the base and water colors for the lamp shades. For the centerpieces we focused on using patterns and various colors schemes. Students also made symmetrical prints using water colors. The 3rd grade classes drew self-portraits on tiles as coasters for the dinner centerpieces. We focused on symmetry in our faces and placement of different facial features and used mirrors as a reference. Emphasizing the importance of proportion and space, for example how big to make our eyes and to leave space where our far head would be. They also made metal embossed projects, including, Aleph Bais tiles that were used in the school mural. The 4th grade classes created relief clay self-portraits, using texture to carve into clay and shapes to build relief images. These projects were included in a school mural. They also made self-portrait pencil sketches. The 5th grade boys’ class created metal embossed tiles for the mural project. The 5th grade girls’ class worked on relief self-portraits in clay. The students drew symmetrical self-portraits using oil pastels emphasizing proportion and spacing of facial features. The 6th grade boys’ classes created clay relief tiles of their favorite school activity. They were also given the opportunity to create their own clay project of whatever they wanted to take home. The 6th grade girls’ class which was at the center of the mural. Students who חנוך לנער על פי דרכו ,created clay relief tiles for the Pasuk had time also made self-portrait pencil sketches.

Words to Recognize:

Symmetry - The parts of an image or object organized so that one side duplicates, or mirrors, the other (also known as formal balance). Texture - texture is the surface quality or "feel" of an object, whether it’s: flat, smooth, shiny, velvety, feathery, soft, rough, prickly, bumpy etc. Proportion - proportion refers to the comparative size relationship of one part to another or to a whole. Space - An element of art that refers to the distance or area between, around, above, below, or within things.

Ten Lessons the Arts Teach By Elliot Eisner

The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.

The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.

The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.

The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.

The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor number exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.

The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects. The arts traffic in subtleties.

The arts teach students to think through and within a material. All art forms employ some means through which images become real.

The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said. When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.

The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.

The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

TSGW BOOK FAIR 2008

MONDAY, DECEMBER 15 – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25

Browse our fantastic selection of secular and Judaic books! Once again, Barnes and Noble has provided a large selection of children’s literature. We also have a variety of Judaica titles supplied by Elli-Chai’s One Stop Judaica Shop. Students will be visiting the Book Fair with their class during school hours on Monday, 12/15 and Wednesday, 12/17. The Book Fair will also be open daily during both morning and afternoon carpools, as well as during lunchtime from 11-1. Please take the opportunity to visit the Book Fair while attending Parent-Teacher Conferences on 12/16, before or after the Women’s Chanukah Program on 12/23, or during the Chanukah Carnival on 12/24.

Book Fair Order Forms: Unable to stop by in person? Not sure which books your child enjoys? A complete list of the titles available at the Book Fair is attached for you to review. Mark the items you would like to purchase and send it back to school with your payment (Cash or Check made out to TSGW).

Teacher Wish Lists: Help build our classroom libraries by purchasing books that your child’s teacher has specifically requested. This is a wonderful way to thank our teachers and enhance their curricula. The books that you give will become a permanent part of the classroom library and every gift will be recognized with a bookplate identifying your family or child as the donor. Look for the Classroom Wish List display at the Book Fair.

Gift Certificates: Searching for the perfect gift? Purchase a Book Fair Gift Certificate for your children, their teachers, or other Torah School community members. Fill out the attached Gift Certificate Order Form and send it into school with your payment (Cash or Check made out to TSGW). The Certificate will then be given to your child or other recipient.

The Torah School Book Fair provides funds to the school library for the purchase of books, along with educational resource materials for the teachers. It is also a wonderful opportunity to increase your home libraries, as well as purchase gifts for family members and friends. Your involvement enriches the lives of your children, their teachers, and the entire Torah School community. We look forward to seeing you there!
