Rabbi Eliezer (Elie) Bercuson is currently the Director of the Orthodox Union’s Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus at Princeton University. Rabbi Bercuson was born in Montreal, Quebec and was raised in Ottawa, Ontario. He holds a Bachelor of Humanities in Philosophy and Classics from Carleton University in Ottawa and an M.A. in Jewish Philosophy from Yeshiva University. He has been granted semikhah (ordination) both by the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva Uni- versity and by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, with whom he studied at Yeshivat Hamivtar in Efrat. He has worked as a rabbinic intern at the Riverdale Jewish Center in the Bronx, Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford, CT, and Anshe Sholom B’nai Israel Con- gregation in Chicago. He has also trained as a military chaplain for the US Army Re- serves in Fort Totten, Queens, and a hospital chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital. Rabbi Bercuson’s interests include distance running, French literature, history of philoso- phy, and folk music. Mrs. Ilana Bercuson currently partners with her husband as Director of JLIC at Princeton. She grew up in Highland Park, NJ, graduated from the University of Mary- land with a BS in family studies and a minor in Jewish studies, and then studied Jew- ish texts at Nishmat in Jerusalem. She has worked in development at Hadassah, and as part of the rabbinic intern couple at Anshe Sholom B’nai Israel Congregation in Chi- cago. She has completed a master’s in educational psychology at Hunter College. Rabbi and Mrs. Bercuson are parents of Dov, age 2, and Batya, who was born earlier this month. This is his first contribution to the Seforim Blog. Jerusalem of the 1930s was boiled in fury. The inevitability of bitter conflict with the Arabs of Palestine had become too clear to deny, while the fighting among Jews, if not quite as violent, was bitter and unmistakable. How to deal with the Arabs, how to deal with the British, how to bring new immigrants and, once they were there, sustain them, how to deal with Hitler’s shadow looming large over Europe – and how to deal with Zionism’s revolution not only against centuries of Jewish politics, but centuries more of Jewish religion and history. The arguments were as heated as the stakes were high. All the more striking it was that on Monday, September 2, 1935, the fourth day of Elul 5695, some fifteen thousand people, amounting to one third of Jewish Jerusalem and nearly five percent of Jewish Palestine, religious and secular alike, joined by foreign diplomats, scholars, day laborers and rabbis, came out to follow the coffin of Chief Rabbi Abraham Isaac ha-Kohen Kook, dead at age seventy.
