Accepted 26 March, 2009 Vernonia ( Vernonia galamensis ) is a new potential industrial oilseed crop. The seeds of this crop contain unusual naturally epoxidised fatty acids which are used in the production of various industrial products. The objective of this study was to evaluate and select vernonia lines in Limpopo province through seed oil content, fatty acid content and RAPD DNA markers. Significant differences were observed for the content of seed oil (22.4 - 29.05%), vernolic acid (73.09 - 76.83%), linoleic acid (13.02 - 14.05%), oleic acid (3.77 - 5.28%), palmitic acid (2.48 - 2.98%) and stearic acid (2.26 - 2.75%). Among the 13 RAPD DNA primers screened, primer OPA 10 amplified DNA samples and resulted in 4 distinct groupings among tested lines. Four promising lines were selected; Vge-16, Vge-20, Vge-27 and Vge-32 using seed oil content, fatty acids and RAPD markers.

Received 13 June, 2015; Accepted 4 August, 2015 Natural products are sources of various biologically active chemicals. Therefore, ethnopharmacological and ethnobotanical studies are essential to discover new substances for the treatment of diseases. In this context, many studies have been conducted of the Asteraceae family demonstrating medicinal properties of its representatives, such as species of the genus Vernonia , which are rich in bioactive substances like sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, tannins and steroids. This review presents an overview of Vernonia species with antimicrobial potential, their main phytochemical characteristics and ethnomedicinal uses. Key words: Compositae, Vernonieae, phytochemistry, biological activity, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal. INTRODUCTION

  • Evolution of Angiosperm Seed Disperser Mutualisms: the Timing of Origins and Their Consequences for Coevolutionary Interactions Between Angiosperms and Frugivores
Biol. Rev. (2014), pp. 000–000. 1 doi: 10.1111/brv.12164 Evolution of angiosperm seed disperser mutualisms: the timing of origins and their consequences for coevolutionary interactions between angiosperms and frugivores Ove Eriksson∗ Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University, SE-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden ABSTRACT The origins of interactions between angiosperms and fruit-eating seed dispersers have attracted much attention following a seminal paper on this topic by Tiffney (1984). This review synthesizes evidence pertaining to key events during the evolution of angiosperm–frugivore interactions and suggests some implications of this evidence for interpretations of angiosperm–frugivore coevolution. The most important conclusions are: (i) the diversification of angiosperm seed size and fleshy fruits commenced around 80 million years ago(Mya). The diversity of seed sizes, fruit sizes and fruit types peaked in the Eocene around 55 to 50 Mya. During this first phase of the interaction, angiosperms and animals evolving frugivory expanded into niche space not previously utilized by these groups, as frugivores and previously not existing fruit traits appeared. From the Eocene until the present, angiosperm–frugivore interactions have occurred within a broad frame of existing niche space, as defined by fruit traits and frugivory, motivating a separation of the angiosperm–frugivore interactions into two phases, before and after the peak in the early Eocene. (ii) The extinct multituberculates were probably the most important frugivores during the early radiation phase of angiosperm seeds and fleshy fruits. Primates and rodents are likely to have been important in the latter part of this first phase. (iii) Flying frugivores, birds and bats, evolved during the second phase, mainly during the Oligocene and Miocene, thus exploiting an existing diversity of fleshy fruits.

  • Vernonia Galamensis L.) in Ethiopia Kedir Wulchafo Hussen
International Journal of Engineering and Information Systems (IJEAIS) ISSN: 2643-640X Vol. 3 Issue 9, September – 2019, Pages: 31-38 Review Paper on Genetic Diversity of Vernonina (Vernonia Galamensis L.) in Ethiopia Kedir Wulchafo Hussen Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Wondo Genet Agricultural Research Center, Shashamene, Ethiopia [email protected], Corresponding author: Kedir Wulchafo Hussen Abstract: Vernonia galamensis is a new potential industrial crop with very high content of vernolic acid in the seed oil. The species is known to naturally grow as a weed in fields or in woodlands under a wide range of agroecological conditions of Africa. In order to study the existing variability in Ethiopia, germplasm collection was carried out. Vernonia grows wild in various ecosystems. Ten regions were explored from North, South, East, Southeast, Southwest and Central Ethiopia. A diverse range of habitats having different altitudes and ecological conditions was explored. The main objective of this paper was to review the genetic diversity of Vernonia crop through morphological, seed oil content and fatty acid for possible exploitation as an industrial oil crop. Vernonia galamensis is a good source of seed oil rich in epoxy acid, which can be used to manufacture plastic formulations, protective coatings, and other products. Seed from a natural stand in Ethiopia contained 31% epoxy acid. Keywords: Epoxy, acid, galamensis, diversity, domestication, distribution, Ethiopia Introduction Vernonia (Vernonia galamensis) is an annual member of the Asteraceae and is widely distributed in regions of Africa. The V. galamensis species complex is now recognized, according to Gilbert (1986), to include six subspecies, namely galamensis, mutomoensis, nairobensis, afromomntana, gibbosa, and lushotoensis.
