The fractions were eluted and investigated for the presence of total flavonoids and phenolics. The Open Acess Full Text Article values of thin-layer chromatographic analysis for the leaf, flower and fruit extracts of S. alata when compared to gallic acid and quercetrin (standard) showed that the fractions contained a chemical component in the class of gallic acid and quercetrin, respectively. The presence of total phenolic and flavonoids could be responsible for the observed antifungal and antibacterial activities of the plant. It could be concluded that this plant is a natural source of antimicrobial substances of high importance and are useful in antiseptic and disinfectant formulation as well as in chemotherapy. -

Turk J Bot 31 (2007) 297-310 © TÜB‹TAK Research Article Characteristics of the Stem-Leaf Transitional Zone in Some Species of Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) Abdel Samai Moustafa SHAHEEN Botany Department, Aswan Faculty of Science, South Valley University - EGYPT Received: 14.02.2006 Accepted: 15.02.2007 Abstract: The vascular supply of the proximal, middle, and distal parts of the petiole were studied in 11 caesalpinioid species with the aim of documenting any changes in vascular anatomy that occurred within and between the petioles. The characters that proved to be taxonomically useful include vascular trace shape, pericyclic fibre forms, number of abaxial and adaxial vascular bundles, number and relative position of secondary vascular bundles, accessory vascular bundle status, the tendency of abaxial vascular bundles to divide, distribution of sclerenchyma, distribution of cluster crystals, and type of petiole trichomes. There is variation between studied species in the number of abaxial, adaxial, and secondary bundles, as seen in transection of the petiole. There are also differences between leaf trace structure of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the petioles within each examined species. Senna italica Mill. and Bauhinia variegata L. show an abnormality in their leaf trace structure, having accessory bundles (concentric bundles) in the core of the trace. This study supports the moving of Ceratonia L. from the tribe Cassieae to the tribe Detarieae. Most of the characters give valuable taxonomic evidence reliable for delimiting the species investigated (especially between Cassia L. and Senna (Cav.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby) at the generic and specific levels, as well as their phylogenetic relationships. -

Jatropha gossypiifollia used as analgesics, neuropharmacological agents, anti-diarrheal, anit-cancer, hypotensive, vasorelaxant, coagulant and anti- inflammatory, anti-pyretic, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, hepatoprotective, and anti-diabetic activity. Latex of J.Gossypiifollia used as hemostatic agent. The J.gossypiifollia leaves are used to treat multiple boils in the skin, dermatitis, itches, and tongue sore of babies, inflammation of milk secreting glands, stomach ache, and sexually transmitted diseases and also the leaf decoction is used for cleaning the wounds. Seeds are emetic and purgative. Senna alata roots, leaf, bark, flower and seed extracts possesses pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant, analgesic, and antimicrobial, immune boosting activities. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths. -

Methods: The α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory potentials of acetone, ethylacetate and hexane extracts of S. alata were investigated by reacting different concentrations (0.63 – 10.0 mg/mL) of the extracts with the enzymes and substrates while the mode(s) of inhibition of both enzymes were determined using the Lineweaver-Burk plot. The effect of oral administration of the hexane extract (with lowest IC50 for α-glucosidase) of the plant in sucrose-induced hyperglycemic rats was also determined by evaluating fasting blood glucose levels. Results: The acetone extract of S. alata displayed the highest inhibitory activity against α-amylase (IC50 = 6.41 mg/mL) while hexane extract exhibited highest inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase (IC50 = 0.85 mg/mL). -

Findings from the proximate analysis revealed high content of 20 April 2018 carbohydrate (58.44±0.16 g/100g) and low moisture content (2.90±0.01 g/100g). The anti- Accepted: 7 May 2018 nutritional analysis prefigures low content of alkaloid (2.00 g/100g) while saponin was not detected. Mineral analysis revealed respectively excellent source of K (1356.74mg/100g), Ca (288.55 mg/100g), Mg (134.00 mg/100g) and Fe (14.50 mg/100g). The GC/MS analysis on the Keywords seed oil yield reasonable percentage of linoleic acid (53.80%), and the least was recorded for behenic acid (1.34%). The high nutrient content in the seed of this plant suggest it could be used Senna alata Seed as an alternative feed source for livestock.
