Turk J Bot 31 (2007) 297-310 © TÜB‹TAK Research Article Characteristics of the Stem-Leaf Transitional Zone in Some Species of Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) Abdel Samai Moustafa SHAHEEN Botany Department, Aswan Faculty of Science, South Valley University - EGYPT Received: 14.02.2006 Accepted: 15.02.2007 Abstract: The vascular supply of the proximal, middle, and distal parts of the petiole were studied in 11 caesalpinioid species with the aim of documenting any changes in vascular anatomy that occurred within and between the petioles. The characters that proved to be taxonomically useful include vascular trace shape, pericyclic fibre forms, number of abaxial and adaxial vascular bundles, number and relative position of secondary vascular bundles, accessory vascular bundle status, the tendency of abaxial vascular bundles to divide, distribution of sclerenchyma, distribution of cluster crystals, and type of petiole trichomes. There is variation between studied species in the number of abaxial, adaxial, and secondary bundles, as seen in transection of the petiole. There are also differences between leaf trace structure of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the petioles within each examined species. Senna italica Mill. and Bauhinia variegata L. show an abnormality in their leaf trace structure, having accessory bundles (concentric bundles) in the core of the trace. This study supports the moving of Ceratonia L. from the tribe Cassieae to the tribe Detarieae. Most of the characters give valuable taxonomic evidence reliable for delimiting the species investigated (especially between Cassia L. and Senna (Cav.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby) at the generic and specific levels, as well as their phylogenetic relationships. -

E-mail [email protected] • Background and Aims In many flammable ecosystems, physically dormant seeds show dormancy-break pat- terns tied to fire, but the link between heat shock and germination in the tropical savannas of Africa and South America remains controversial. Seed heat tolerance is important, preventing seed mortality during fire passage, and is usually predicted by seed traits. This study investigated the role of fire frequency (ecological effects) and seed traits through phylogenetic comparison (historical effects), in determining post-fire germination and seed mortality in legume species of the Cerrado, a tropical savanna–forest mosaic. • Methods Seeds of 46 legume species were collected from three vegetation types (grassy savannas, woody savannas and forests) with different fire frequencies. Heat shock experiments (100 °C for 1 min; 100 °C for 3 min; 200 °C for 1 min) were then performed, followed by germination and seed viability tests. Principal component analysis, generalized linear mixed models and phylogenetic comparisons were used in data analyses. -

KOEDOE - African Protected Area Conservation and Science ISSN: (Online) 2071-0771, (Print) 0075-6458 Page 1 of 16 Original Research A preliminary assessment of the extent and potential impacts of alien plant invasions in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, East Africa Authors: This article provides a preliminary list of alien plant species in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem 1,2 Arne B.R. Witt in East Africa. The list is based on broad-scale roadside surveys in the area and is supplemented Sospeter Kiambi3 Tim Beale4 by more detailed surveys of tourist facilities in the Masai-Mara National Reserve and adjoining Brian W. Van Wilgen2 conservancies. We encountered 245 alien plant species; significantly more than previous studies, of which 62 (25%) were considered to have established self-perpetuating populations Affiliations: in areas away from human habitation. Momentum MoVal Initiative 4.5.2 Develop Renewable Landscape Designs For Drought Tolerance and Irrigation Self-Sufficiency SUMMARY Landscaping is an important element in any community, providing identity and character. It also offers other benefits to include an enriched quality of life, improved environmental conditions, and enhanced property values. To ensure development of the community as envisioned in the General Plan, the City requires the installation of landscape and irrigation as part of any development project and applicable City Capital Improvement Plan projects. The City’s Municipal Code (Chapter 9.17) outlines and defines the requirements for the installation of landscaping and irrigation. It also incorporates the State of California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (Title 23 of the California Code of Regulations § 492.7 - Irrigation Design Plan) and Eastern Municipal Water District’s (EMWD) requirements. Both the State Code and EMWD’s requirements have been updated in recent years in response to the latest drought. Detailed and interactive resources related to drought tolerant (water-wise) plant material and water efficient irrigation are now more readily available. The City relies on the framework established by the Municipal Code, the California Department of Water Resources, and EMWD when reviewing and approving landscape and irrigation plans. These resources, in addition to a number of resources from similarly aligned organizations, provide landscape designs for, or the elements to support, drought tolerance and irrigation self-sufficiency, satisfying the Initiative. BACKGROUND California has experienced significant periods of drought over the years and various forms of measures have been implemented to aid in water conservation. Most recently, on January 17, 2014, the Governor declared a State of Emergency due to severe drought conditions. -
