MONEY WITH JASON CUNNINGHAM BARGAIN SHOPPING When it comes to saving money one of the best things to do is to find a bargain and these can be found everywhere – from retail shops to online. Bargains don't just come in the form of cheap clothes or electronics, you can find a bargain price on almost anything you want. Our money man Jason Cunningham rises to the challenge to find something for each of The Living Room team – a dress for Amanda, sunnies for Baz, food for Miguel and a holiday for Chris – To do this he teams up with bargain expert Chelsea Thomas, from the bargain blog website ”I Heart Bargains”. Together they find great deals and show you ways to save big next time you shop. BARGAIN BUY RRP BARGAIN PRICE Charlie Brown $300 $89 Florentine Eyewear DFO $210 $145 Ourdeal.com $906 $329 Queen Victoria Market $35 $23.50 BARGAIN SHOPPING –CHELSEA’S TIPS FASHION When shopping for fashion items the cheapest items can be found at the big chain stores such as Target, Kmart and Best & Less. Second hand stores can also offer up some good bargains too. However when you are after top brands and new items, then tracking down the factory outlets is your best bet. Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) offers a massive range of top brands which can be found for up to 70% off all under the one roof in one large shopping centre. DFOs can be found in NSW, VIC, QLD and ACT. Often a city will have one area where you can find a range of fashion factory outlets spread over a few different streets. For example in Sydney, Alexandria has a number of warehouse stores such as Nike, Puma, French Connection and Seafolly. Of course keep an eye on the large department stores (Myer and David Jones) which sometimes present some good deals at season sales. Once you have chosen your shopping destination follow these tips and you will score even lower prices. Tips on Fashion Bargains: • Do your research: find the sales outlets– where are they, and what are they like – trip advisor is worth a check in for up to date feedback • Buy off season eg. a pair of winter boots in summer • Ask for a further discount or any deals on offer (if you don’t ask, you don’t get) • Shop on a Monday or Tuesday when it’s quiet and you’ve got bigger chance of nabbing further reductions • Seek a discount in return for endorsing the product on social media (facebook, instagram etc.) – it could mean a big gain for the store The last tip (social media endorsement) is something quite new – so some retailers may not be open to this idea and if they are, the discount may not be that huge but it’s still a saving. FOOD When bargain shopping for food there are supermarkets and there are genuine wholesale markets selling mainly fruit and vegetables. Cheap prices can be found at supermarkets such as Costco, Cash n Carry and the most well known, Aldi Stores. Wholesale fruit and vegetable markets are found in every state – for example in Sydney Paddy’s Markets and in Melbourne the Queen Victoria Food Markets. These places allow shoppers to haggle for cheaper prices, which can make for some real money-saving success. Tips on Food Bargains: • Buy fruit & vegetables in season • Help store owners and buy food just before closing – they’ll need to off load excess stock and you grab a cheaper price - but don’t forget – if you don’t ask you don’t get- so be sure to ask. • Choose your day carefully - in general any food store markets or supermarkets will have more deals on a Monday or Tuesday, so avoid shopping on a weekend • Check out deals online or in the store’s brochure • Go in a co-op with friends • Work out a weekly menu, make a list from it and stick to it • Use a basket not a trolley – or you’ll fill it up! • Don’t shop hungry BIG TICKET ITEMS Overall the timing factor is relevant to both fashion and food – yet it’s also applicable to big ticket items such as cars, white goods and electronic goods. Usually these other tips apply to big ticket items: • Buying at the end of financial year makes a huge difference • Buying at around close time on the day – avoid morning & midday • If it’s early morning & first sale, then sometimes a discount is offered BUYING FUEL Avoid buying at the end of the week and on weekends One news article states: “Tuesday is the cheapest day to buy fuel – found in nearly two thirds of places….The ACCC also found that Thursday was the day of highest demand in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in 2012.” For more detailed analysis take a look at: http://www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/car-care/fuel-prices.htm HOLIDAYS There is a large range of websites online offering holiday deals. It’s a matter of knowing them and simply doing your homework. Taking an hour or two to trawl through them before making your purchase, or signing up membership a month before you make your decision could make all the difference in dollars. The deal which Jason bought online for Chris is below (which may or may not be available at time of airing) http://www.ourdeal.com.au/escape/deal/gold-coast-holiday-park-luxury-villa-getaway-for-up-to-six-people Websites for bargain holidays are listed under ‘websites/links’ below. Tips on Holiday Bargains: • Allow yourself time to search the deals online – buying in a hurry never guarantees you’re getting the best deal out there • Read the fine print – advertised rates can sometimes be relevant to only a junior suite or a set period of time • Avoid school holiday dates and you’ll avoid the high rates • Take your deal to a travel agent and they may just match it for something better WEBLINKS http://iheartbargains.com.au/ FASHION SHOPPING Direct Factory Outlets www.dfo.com.au Florentine Eyewear http://www.florentineeyewear.com.au/ Charlie Brown www.charliebrown.com.au Seduce www.seduce.com.au Sydney Factory Outlets http://www.sydneyfactoryoutlets.com.au/ FOOD SHOPPING Queen Victoria Markets Melbourne http://www.qvm.com.au/ Paddy’s Markets Sydney http://www.paddysmarkets.com.au/ Costco http://www.costco.com.au Aldi https://www.aldi.com.au/ Abcoe Bulk Food Warehouse - www.abcoe.com.au The Grocery Club - www.thegroceryclub.com.au FURTHER TIPS AND ADVICE ON GROCERY SHOPPING Easy Ways To Save Money: http://www.easywaystosavemoney.com.au/ 120 Dollars Food Challenge http://120dollarsfoodchallenge.com/ Money Saving Meals http://moneysavingmeals.com.au/ SEEKING BARGAIN HOLIDAYS www.ourdeal.com.au www.expedia.com.au www.lastminute.com www.ouffer.com www.groupon.com .
