Primary sources are not only the very basis of historical research, but are also widely used in undergraduate teaching as a way to introduce students to voices from the past. The contributors to this book explore various traditions in source- criticism, explain the different ways documents can be read, and use exciting exam- ples from their own research to suggest the insights (and also difficulties) texts might offer. Taking into account the huge expansion in the range of primary sources used by historians, the volume includes chapters on opinion polls, surveillance reports, tes- timony and court files, in addition to more traditional genres such as letters, mem- oranda, diaries, novels, newspapers, political speeches and autobiography. To aid the reader’s understanding of source criticism, the chapters in the first part of this unique volume give an overview of both traditional and new methodological approaches to the use of primary documents. In addition, the introduction offers an accessible checklist suggesting some of the most important steps for interpreting historical sources. Taking examples of sources from many European countries and the USA, and providing up-to-date information on the most widely used textual sources, this is the perfect companion for every student of history who wants to engage with pri- mary sources. We found no pro- per guidance on source interpretation reflecting recent theoretical developments, nor any up-to-date introduction to some of the most important source genres used in the writing of modern history. Attempts to engage theologically with music’s expressivity have been largely rejected on the grounds of a distrust of sensuality, accusations that they endorse a ‘religion of aestheticism’ and concern that they prioritise human emotion at the expense of the divine. This thesis, however, argues that understanding music as expressive is both essential to a proper appreciation of the art form and of value to the theological task, and aims to defend and substantiate this claim in relation to the music of twentieth-century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Analysing a selection of his works with reference to culture, iconography, interiority and comedy, it seeks both to address the theological criticisms of musical expressivism and to carve out a positive theological engagement with the subject, arguing that the distinctive contribution of Shostakovich’s music to theological endeavour lies in relation to a theology of hope, articulated through the possibilities of the creative act.

Their styles developed gradually over long careers, and both made the films that are generally considered their greatest during their late 50s and 60s. In contrast, Orson Welles and Jean-Luc Godard were conceptual filmmakers: both believed words were more important to their films than images, and both wanted to use film to educate their audiences. Belinsky was in good company with his assessment. Such sentiments are rife in the critical essays and articles of the first third of the nineteenth century. A decade earlier, Aleksandr Bestuzhev had declared that, “we have a criticism but no literature” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 67). Several years before that, Pyotr Vyazemsky voiced a similar opinion in his article on Pushkin’s Captive of the Caucasus : “A Russian language exists, but a literature, the worthy expression of a mighty and virile people, does not yet exist!” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 48).     Victor Serge: The Russian Heritage Part One: The Kibalchich Legend by Richard Greeman “There is some one myth for every man, which, if we but know it, would make us understand all he did and thought.” --W.B. Yeats 1.The Children of March 1 On the first page his Memoirs of a Revolutionary, Victor Serge gives a curious account of his origins. It begins on March 1, 1881, the date of the assassination of Czar Alexander II at the hands of Narodnaya Volya, the Party of the Peoples’ Will.1 Serge describes the event in dramatic detail, and the reader learns that one of the regicides, the chemist Nikolai Ivanovitch Kibalchich, was a distant relative of his father, Leon Ivanovitch Kibalchich. Leon is described as “a non- commissioned officer in cavalry of the Czar’s Imperial Guard serving in St. Petersburg at the time and a sympathizer of this tiny illegal party which was demanding land and freedom for the Russian people.” (Victor’s son Vladimir Kibalchich, believed his grandfather Leon Kibalchich was an actual member of the Narodnaya Volya and a participant in the March 1 conspiracy whose assigned role was to have finished off the Czar if he returned to the palace wounded or unharmed.2) Serge’s Memoirs go on to describe the heroism and dignity with which Nikolai Kibalchich and his fellow regicides - martyrs to the cause of land and freedom - faced their judges and executioners. We then learn that Victor’s father moved south and “joined the combat as part of a [Narodnaya Volya] military organization” in the Ukraine.

    BALTIC CRUISE AND DENMARK TRIP AUGUST 9 TO AUGUST 30, 2010 And so we begin the second great journey in this, our fourth year of blissful retirement from useful labor, by traveling to Stockholm, boarding a cruise ship that will sail the Baltic for ten days and take us to relatively exotic ports, and visiting Copenhagen before driving around the rest of Denmark. Our only concerns before leaving the U. S. of A. are: (1) Will the Icelandic volcano (Eyjafjallajökull by name) erupt again, thus interfering with our overseas flight? (2) Will the brutal heat wave* that has enervated much of _____________________________________________________________________________ *It has been an unusually hot summer in Eastern Europe. Moscow has been ringed by forest fires and St. Petersburg, one of our destinations, has seen temperatures over 100°F. In fact, a Houston native, if you can believe it, having taken the identical Regent Seven Seas Voyager itinerary that we'll be following, but from July 8 to 18, reported on Cruise Critic how beastly hot she found the various museums and churches in St. Pete, none of which had the benefit of modern air-conditioning. _______________________________________________________________________________ this part of Europe break by the time we get there? And (3) Will my sciatica* be well-enough behaved that we can enjoy ourselves? _____________________________________________________________________________ *Readers of my New Zealand journal (http://web.utk.edu/~rmagid/NewZealand2010.pdf) will recall that the sciatica that began in October, 2009, was but a mild nuisance during our travels earlier this year. This summer, however, the pain in both of m y legs increased to the point that I had an MRI done in early July, visited a neurosurgery practice on July 27, and was advised to get a cortisone shot directly to the area of the spine where the bulging discs were impinging on the sciatic nerve.
