They are known to influence the composition and structure of plant communities through their herbivorous and seed predation activities, as agents of soil aeration through their burrowing activities, pest controllers as the consume large amounts of insects and plant material, and as food for a variety of prey. Yet, the understanding of small mammal ecology is overshadowed by studies of large mammals as small mammals have very little tourism appeal and are often viewed as vermin benefiting from human disturbances. Even so, many small mammals are known to be highly sensitive to anthropogenic factors. This lack of information on small mammals also applies to the Kafue National Park (KNP), Zambia, including the Busanga Flood Plain as one of KNP’s critical habitats and a wetland of international importance (RAMSAR site number 1659). Not much is known about small mammals in the KNP, much less the influence of anthropogenic and non-antropogenic factors on their communities. Given that KNP is a protected area where the human foot print is minimized, anthropogenic factors that act upon the communities of small mammals include bush fires, that occur repeatedly (annually) on wildlands. -

Dear All They were playing polocrosse this weekend so I went down to take a look. It is being held at Chundukwa where the club is based. Lots of fun for all the family. There are four teams playing: Livingstone, Choma, Leopards Hill and Lusaka South. These are the main teams in Zambia. The Zambia Police used to play but have not been joining in for some time. Come on, Zambia Police, get your team going again – it is good for public/private relationships. Zambia has a national team which recently played in South Africa. Since that time our team has been recognised internationally and we are now 8 th in the world. Even ts on the Way 11 August: Half Marathon. Kariba Livingstone Airport Town 11-16 August: Cycle Zambia. STATS BRIEF 3 INTRODUCTION This Stats Brief presents a summary of the latest Transport and Infrastructure Statistics for Quarter 1, 2021. It covers statistics relating to Air, Rail and Water Transport as well as Motor Vehicle Registrations. Aircraft movements increased by 3.6 percent in Q1 2021 from 4,306 movements recorded in the previous quarter. Domestic aircraft movements constituted 71.3 percent of the total, while international aircraft movements made up 28.7 percent. The volume of goods transported through rail this quarter went down by 11.6 percent. A total of P55.3 million was generated from the transportation of those goods, resulting in a decline of 12.0 percent from P62.8 million generated in the previous quarter Pontoon passengers increased from 17,268 in Q4 2020 to 19,254 in Q1 2021, registering an increase of 11.5 percent. Vehicles transported by the pontoon decreased by 11.0 percent from 14,308 in Q4 2020 to 10,254 in Q1 2021. 2.4 Zambia Railway Assessment Travel Time Matrix Railway Companies and Consortia Capacity Table Key Route Information Key Stations The Zambia National Railways are very important to the economy of the country as it is a bulk carrier with less effect on the environment than many other transport modes. The Government intends to expand its railway network in the country to develop the surface transport sector. Through the Ministry of Transport, a new statutory instrument (SI) was passed, which requires industries to move 30% of their carriage by rail. This is in a bid to decongest the road sector and possibly reduce the damage done by heavy duty trucks on Zambian roads. The development of rail routes linking important exit points is not only vital for facilitating smooth access to the outside but also for the overall boosting of trade in the sub-region and making Zambia a competitive country for business. Traditionally, the Zambian railways have generally operated well below their original design capacity, yet significant investment is underway to increase their volumes by investing in track conditions, increase locomotive and wagon availability and increase operating capital. The rail network remains the dominant mode of transportation for goods on the local and international routes but is under-utilized. The main railway lines are the Zambia Railways, owned by Government and the TAZARA line, linking Zambia with Tanzania, and jointly owned by the Zambian and Tanzanian governments. The opening of the Chipata-Mchinji railway link provides connectivity into the Malawi and Mozambique railway network and further connects Zambia to the port of Nacala. -

VICTORIA FALLS Price Guide for Victoria Falls, East Africa www.sunsafaris.com © Sun Safaris ABOUT VICTORIA FALLS Victoria Falls is one of the most remarkable natural wonders of the world, known as the Smoke that Thunders, called Mosi-oa-Tunya in the local language. This breath-taking waterfall was discovered by the great explorer, Sir David Livingstone, in 1855 after a long trek across Africa. The explorer was transported in a canoe by the local Makalolo people to the very edge of these falls. He was so in awe and uttered his famous words “It has never been seen before by European eyes, but scenes so wonderful must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. He named it for the then-Queen, Victoria, who visited the Falls in 1947 and stayed in the Victoria Falls Hotel. Victoria Falls is made of 5 different ‘falls’, 4 of which are in Zimbabwe: The Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and Horseshoe Falls; while one, The Eastern Cataract, is in the bordering country of Zambia. The plummeting curtain of water is over 1km wide and plunges to an estimated 110m; however the foot of the Falls is constantly eroding, so they may fall much deeper than that. 2 This plunging curtain of water creates clouds of water vapour that rise high above it, giving it its nickname, the Smoke that Thunders. This is the biggest curtain of water and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Visitors can walk along the footpaths and watch as millions of litres of water plummet into the Zambezi River below, however, one does stand the chance of getting soaked at this close range and raincoats are on offer to keep onlookers dry. -

Combatants of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANLA) engage in an intense skirmish against a larger number of enemy forces . 25 enemy forces killed or injured. Subsequent to beginning of guerrilla warfare, the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) had launched sabotage campaigns (1963-4). May: "Sinoia Band" strikes again, after other clashes, in Hartley area 300 miles inland, almost in center of country. Aug. -Sept. : Makuti-Sinoia area, ZANLA clashes with enemy. Sept. -Dec. : Clashes elsewhere in the north and northeast, by ZANLA combatants. Mid-1966: ZAPU Campaign begins. ZAPU force engages enemy in open combat for the first time.
