  • View of ASEAN Food William W
Foreword Amb. Kim Young-sun Secretary General, ASEAN-Korea Centre The ASEAN* region has a great variety of cuisines that are distinctive despite having some common elements. ASEAN cuisine is a celebration of cultural diversity and unique ways of life, delivered through appetite-whetting dishes and exotic aromas. It embraces the unique characteristics of many different ethnicities, and in that way is a history of the culture of the region. The ASEAN spirit and passion permeate each and every dish, and food is an important link in the chain that binds the ASEAN community together. The ASEAN Culinary Festival 2016, organized by the ASEAN-Korea Centre, aims to introduce ASEAN cuisine to the Korean public by presenting a wide spectrum of ASEAN dishes. Thirty distinctive dishes are included; they were selected to suit the Korean palate while showcasing the diverse flavors of ASEAN. Under the theme “Gourmet Trips to ASEAN,” the Festival will help Koreans, also known for their cuisine, discover the sweet and savory ASEAN culinary delights. In line with the “Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration” campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, the Festival also intends to promote ASEAN culinary destinations by showcasing fascinating food trails across the region to the Korean public. Food is a universal language that brings people and cultures together. It is an essential part of life to all people of all nations. With the rise in the number of tourists traveling specifically to experience the cuisine of other peoples, food is increasingly important in enhancing harmony around the world. In this regard, I am certain that the ASEAN Culinary Festival will serve as a platform to strengthen the partnership between ASEAN and Korea by connecting the hearts and minds of the people and creating a bond over a “shared meal of diversity.” With the ASEAN-Korea Cultural Exchange Year in 2017, the ASEAN Culinary Festival is a new way to bring deeper cultural understanding between ASEAN and Korea.

A. 1927 YEA": tOOK OF THE EVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST DENOMINATION Comprising a Complete Directory of the General Conference, all Union and Local Conferences, Mission Fields, Educational Institutions, Publishing Houses, Periodicals, and Sanitariums. PREPARED BY H. E. ROGERS, Statistical Secretary of the General Conference. PUBLISHED BY REVIEW AND HERALD PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION WASHINGTON, D. C. Printed in the U. S. A. C v. • • • Go Forward C. P. BOLLMAN - • GOD'S word to Israel now, as at the sea, Is " Forward go, not trusting self, but Me." The work is great, but He is greater still, And vic'try comes to him who does God's will. Go forward? There's inspiration in this word That once so deep the heart of Israel stirred. Our Promised Land, too, lies beyond a sea That must be crossed by us before that we, Like Moses, and his host, can sing that song To which our hearts have all aspired so long. Go forward! Doors stand everywhere ajar, As onward swiftly moves God's conquering car; This is no time to falter, nor to yield A single acre of our world-wide field. Go forward then! Truth's victory is sure, The word and oath of God makes it secure; Then let the cost to us be what it may, We'll onward press the upward, forward way, Until at last we hear our Captain say: " The battle is over, the vict'ry's won; Enter My joy, for work faithfully done." • The Portrayals of Symbols Characterizing Malaysian Cultural Values in the Local Children Animated Television Series
Journal of Education and Social Sciences, Vol. 11, Issue 1, (October) ISSN 2289-9855 2018 THE PORTRAYALS OF SYMBOLS CHARACTERIZING MALAYSIAN CULTURAL VALUES IN THE LOCAL CHILDREN ANIMATED TELEVISION SERIES Nur Nadia binti Abd Mubin Mohammad bin Yaacob ABSTRACT The portrayal of local content in television programmes plays an essential role in promoting local culture and inculcating cultural values to the viewers. The primary goal of this study was to explore the Malaysian cultural content and values portrayed in the local children’s animated television series. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 20 locally produced children’s animated series to identify the portrayal of Malaysian cultural values. NVivo 10 qualitative software was employed to analyse the content of 118 episodes from the selected series with the use of non-probability sampling because data were limited and based on the researcher’s judgement in ensuring the representativeness and appropriateness of data to suit the research objectives. Using symbol as the main variable of this study, five themes were extracted from the content analysis, namely (i) agriculture activities; (ii) traditional garments and accessories; (iii) cuisine; (iv) architecture; and (v) apparatus. The findings indicated that the portrayals of local symbols were present in the scenes of the analysed animated television series, especially in the local-themed series such as “Upin dan Ipin”, “Bola Kampung Extreme”, “BoBoiBoy”, and “The Amazing Awang Khenit”. The findings shows that the Malaysian cultural values were portrayed in the local animated television series, and the Malay culture was more profoundly portrayed in three of the five themes, representing the dominant ethnic group in Malaysia.
