This study examines the process of the integration of displaced Orthodox Finns in post- war Upper Savo. Through the development of the situation in Upper Savo, it examines the question of how the evacuees adapted and were integrated back into Finnish soci- ety not only there but also in a broader context. It addresses the inconsistency between the so-called official version of Finnish history and the memories (oral history) of the evacuated Orthodox Karelians. Up to the end of 1990s, the official history portrayed the postwar era of reconstruction almost uniquely as a national success story, and op- posing views and experiences were shut out. “Controlled Integration” offers a new perspective on the question of how Finnish society integrated the otherness that the displaced Orthodox Karelians represented for local communities and consequently also for the national community and collective identity. The source material varies from oral history sources to the archives of the au- thorities that handled the integration at both the local and national levels. The study focuses on the conflict that occurred between the locals and the newcomers, after the latter had had to evacuate their homes and resettle in the remaining part of Finland. The conflict at the grass-roots level can also be understood as an expression of the need for homogeneity that the locals experienced when strangers representing the Orthodox other came into strongly Lutheran societies. A study of how the actions of the local population determined the assimilative and integrative process constitutes the main subject of the beginning of this disserta- tion. However, the analysis is not limited to an examination of local official and unoffi- cial methods of control. The perspective expands to take in the adaptation of the whole local community and the Finnish nation to the postwar situation, which at both the mental and physical levels had permanently altered from the one that existed before the war. It is noteworthy that the mental adaptation to the new situation progressed at the level of local and national collective identities. The integration of groups (the locals and the displaced Karelians) who were initially strange to each other and who were visualized by each other mainly through stereotypical definitions was facilitated not only by an increase in concrete cooperation but also by the construction of a sense of community and commonly shared features of identity and by identification with these. Niistä on väitöstutkimus tehty. ******************************** Kohtaamani karjalaiset usein kysyvät, kuinka olen kiinnostunut siirtoväen so- peutumisesta. Selitykseksi he ovat ennakoineet kuulumistani karjalaiseen su- kuun. Henkilökohtainen kytkökseni aihepiiriin toki selittää tutkimuskohteen va- likoitumista. Olen kiuruvetisenä, yläsavolaisena ja suomalaisena lapsuudesta saakka omaksunut käsityksen hyvästä siirtoväen sopeutumisesta, sotien jälkei- sen uudisraivauksen mittavuudesta sekä vallinneesta maahengestä erinäisissä sosiaalisissa tilanteissa. Esiymmärrykseni tutkimusaiheesta on toisin sanoen nojannut empiriaan, kokemukseen paikallisesta ja suomalaisesta todellisuudes- ta, kiuruvetisestä ja kansallisesta identiteetistä. Pohtiessani sidettäni paikallisen identiteetin osaperustaksi nostettuihin asuttamis- ja sopeutumiskertomuksiin tulee väistämättä tunne, että sotien jälkei- sen kauden tulevaisuudenuskoiseen asutus- ja maahenkeen olisi helppo imeytyä mukaan. Tutkimuksessa käsittelemieni myyttisten menneisyyskertomusten ää- rellä on nähtävästi itse kunkin suomalaiset sukujuuret omaavan ja suomalaiseen yhteisöön sosiaalistuneen vaivatonta tuntea ylpeyttä niistä sodat läpi eläneiden sukupolvien saavutuksista, joilla on ollut keskeinen merkitys olemassaolollemme suomalaisina yksilöinä ja eritasoilla vaikuttavina yhteisöinä. Olen kasvaessani myös oppinut pitämään ympäröivän sosiaalisen todelli- suuden perususkomuksia, instituutioita ja merkityksiä luonnollisena. Tästä on seurannut, ettei asuttamistarinaa eli paikallis- ja valtioyhteisön saavutusmyy- tiksi tulkitsemaani suurta kertomusta ole ollut helppo katsoa uudesta näkö- kulmasta. Inkeri Anttilan mukaan yhteisön jäsen useimmiten tyytyy enemmis- tön määrittelemiin ja yhteisössä vakiintuneisiin arvoihin, asenteisiin ja tapoihin sekä sisäistää yhteisön normijärjestelmän. Tutkijanakin voi lopulta saavuttaa vain vajavaisen käsityksen tutkimastaan menneisyydestä, sillä yhteisöjäsenyys estää tutkimuskohteesta riippumatta aina jossain määrin näkemästä oman ajan kulttuurisia itsestäänselvyyksiä; onhan hyvän sopeutumisen kertomus raken- nusaineena myös 2000–luvun alun kiuruvetisten ja vähintään jossain määrin myös muidenkin suomalaisten identiteetissä. Kuitenkin nuo samat, tutkimassani yhteisössä elämäni vuodet (1977-), jot- ka tekevät minusta osan kiuruvetistä, yläsavolaista ja suomalaista, mahdollista- vat sen katselemisen poikkeavasta näkökulmasta. Jäsenyys eri tasojen yhtei- söissä on antanut mahdollisuuden eläytyvään oivaltamiseen ja tilaisuuden hahmottaa yhteyksiä eritasoisten rakenteiden välillä uudella tavalla. Tutkimukset on tehty myös tutkijan saamasta tuesta. Haluankin kiittää kaikkia niitä tahoja, jotka ovat tavalla tai toisella tukeneet tutkimustyötäni ja mahdollis- taneet sen. Olen suorittanut työtäni Jyväskylän yliopiston tutkimusprojektien Maaseutuihmisen selviytymisstrategiat, Rauhan jälkeen jatkunut sota ja Vieraita idästä (128401) suojissa.     19th Century Laestadian (Apostolic) Ministers in the United States In the mid-1840's, Swedish-Saami preacher and botanist Lars-Levi Laestadius experienced a spiritual awakening while ministering in Northern Sweden. Word began to spread about his sermons, and the Laestadian revival spread throughout Lapland and later to all parts of Scandinavia as well as Western Russia. Because many of the early Finnish immigrants of the Copper and Iron Ranges of Michigan and Minnesota came from Finnish and Norwegian Lapland, Laestadianism also found a strong foothold in the United States. Laestadian churches would later be founded in other Finnish population centers of the United States. While, historically, the Laestadian movement often worked within the official Lutheran churches in Scandinavia, American adherents formed their own congregations which were not part of the larger Suomi Synod or LCA/ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) churches. Today there are many different divisions of Laestadianism in Europe, which sometimes correspond with the many different factions of the revival movement in the United States, which includes Apostolic Lutheran, Old Apostolic Lutheran, First Apostolic Lutheran, independent churches, and the Laestadian Lutheran Church of America. In 1967, the Suomen Kirkkohistoriallinen Seura (Historical Society of Finnish Churches) issued its publication No. 74: Lestadiolaisuuden matrikkeli ja bibliografia (Laestadian [Minister] Index and Bibliography), written and compiled by Pekka Raittila. The Matrikkeli index is titled 1800-luvun Lestadiolaisia saarnaajia, or 19th Century Laestadian Ministers/Preachers/Speakers and includes a seperate index for leaders of the movement titled Matrikkeli B: 1800-luvun Lestadiolaisia pappeja ja ei-saarnaajia. This does not refer, however, to a focus on continuity or to a static or uniform understanding of Sámi religion. Sámi religion is an ambiguous concept that has to be understood as a pluralistic phenomenon consisting of multiple applications and associations and widely differing interpretations, and that highlights the complexities of processes of religion-making.     The impact of the Reformation on the formation of mentality and the moral landscape in the Nordic countries1 VEIKKO ANTTONEN University of Turku Abstract Along with the Lutheran world the Nordic countries celebrated the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation on 31st October 2017. In this article I shall examine the impact of Luther’s reform on the formation of mentality and the moral landscape in the Nordic coun- tries. Special reference is made to the impact of Lutheranism on the indigenous Sámi culture, a topic which has been explored extensively by Håkan Rydving, the expert in Sámi language and religion. Keywords: Reformation, Martin Luther, Nordic countries, national identity, mentality, Sámi, Laestadianism The Protestant Reformation has played an extremely important role in the historical development of Europe during the last five hundred years. No other event in European history has received such widespread attention. It took place in the obscure fortress and university town of Wittenberg on 31st October 1517. A single hand-written text containing ninety-five theses against the beliefs and practices of the medieval Catholic Church opened a new era in European history. The well-known story tells us that the Augus- tinian monk and university professor Martin Luther came to his theological moment by the single act of nailing his ninety-five theses to the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg (Roper 2016). Whether Luther used a nail to pin his theses on the door is a myth which cannot be verified. As Lyndal Roper writes in her biographical study of Martin Luther, the initial inten- tion of the Reformer was not to spark a religious revolution, but to start an academic debate (Roper 2016, 2).

    356 http://jrmdc.com Weary and grateful: The power of expressed emotions on the internet among Conservative Laestadians By Meri-Anna Elina Hintsala University of Helsinki, Finland Contact: [email protected] Keywords: internet, gender, emotion, contraception, Conservative Laestadianism Abstract: Emotions have been interpreted as a social glue and as a vital foundation for active internet discussions as well as lived bodily experiences. In this article, I will analyse emotional expressions that are based on a teaching of rejecting contraceptives in the Finnish revival movement Conservative Laestadianism (CL). The emotions are expressed through internet discussions in autobiographical narrations, which are analysed qualitatively. The article illustrates three emotional positions in relation to the teaching on contraception – believers, doubters and surrenderers – as a part of a religious emotional regime. I will argue that context and meaning of emotions are significant in order to understand them as part of a religious system, and the embeddedness of emotions should be taken into account when analysing emotions on the internet. About the author: Meri-Anna Hintsala is a PhD student in the Sociology of Religion at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She works as a doctoral student on the research project “Embodied Religion: Changing Meanings of Body and Gender in Contemporary Forms of Religious Identity in Finland”, funded by Academy of Finland.
