Central Dakota Humane Society 2 Bismarck-Mandan’s No-Kill Shelter Shelter Report By Sue Buchholz, Shelter Director Covid-19 Might Be Here, But Helping The Animals Continues Kindly forgive my musings, it’s my working to adjust our expectations in a COVID world. We aim to first pandemic. I have to tell you that so maximize our pet population, while still leaving a bit of room for far, I am not impressed. It’s no secret I more animals that come in every day. Due to these guidelines, CDHS has had to cancel or reimagine some of our longstanding events. We discovered that it was difficult to notify our supporters about these abrupt changes in plans because we didn’t have a good means of getting in touch. We found a real need to bulk up our email database so that we could stay connected about our events and important shelter news. Being able to send online receipts and information would also help reduce our mailing costs and save paper and ink. If you would like to be added to our online communications list, please send your name, address, email address, and mobile phone number to [email protected]. We will continue working together – apart – to help the animals, and we’ll keep you notified about everything CDHS. 

Central Dakota Humane Society 4 Bismarck-Mandan’s No-Kill Shelter Our Volunteers are Paw-some!

Keeping the CDHS shelter grounds looking neat and spiffy takes a tremendous amount of time and effort. Most of our staff is busy caring for the animals, so the yard work mostly falls to our awesome volunteers. Fortunately, we seem to have found the perfect group of volunteers who are up to the task. Dave Keller and his granddaughter, Mallory Henriksen, provide the mowing muscle and are either on the riding lawn mower or pushing the hand mower over the hard-to-reach areas. Dave started early in the summer because he had a little free time. When his granddaughter Mallory, who is off to college this fall, expressed an interest in helping, Dave saw this opportunity to spend a little time with Mallory and help CDHS. Win-win! Dave encourages others with free time on their hands to volunteer. While attending to the mowing, Dave has spent some time watching the other volunteers walking dogs and socializing the cats. He loves to see people spending time helping the critters. A word of caution from Dave is, “If you decide to volunteer, be careful. You may fall in love with one of the dogs or cats they are caring for.” (Um, yeah, Dave, that is THE plan!) We are so appreciative of the work that Dave and Mallory are doing keeping our Volunteer team of grandfather, Dave Keller, and granddaughter, Mallory Henriksen, grounds looking great. Thank you to this dynamic duo! do a great job of mowing the large shelter CDHS has also found a wonderful helper in our new volunteer Jim Bittner. Jim property. enjoys time outside and does everything from trimming hedges to weed wacking to hand mowing to walking dogs. He also has been a tremendous help with hauling the cans to the recycling center at least once a week. Jim feels if he helps with yard work, the staff can concentrate on the care of the pets and if you are thinking of volunteering, Jim says, “JUST DO IT!” Jim is also a dog , and CDHS is a very lucky recipient of his time and talents. Jim and his wife have been supporters of CDHS for several years and after he retired, he wanted to help a good cause like CDHS. Jim said the staff is always helpful and appreciative and easy to work with. We think Jim is pretty darn helpful and easy to work with as well! Our Volunteer of the Year pulls weeds and walks dogs! Ruth Borlaug holds the title of Volunteer of the Year for 2019 and continues to take her volunteer job seriously, showing up early most days for her dog walking shift and helps keep our shelter grounds looking great. Ruth has recently taken on the important job of clearing a Volunteer Jim Bittner has spent the summer large patch of scratchy weeds from the center of our yard and it has made a huge trimming, pruning, mowing, and knocking difference in the appearance of the shelter grounds. Ruth loves seeing the other staff down the weeds. and visitors who share her passion for critters here at CDHS. She also shares the love of landscaping with other volunteers. Ruth has been volunteering at CDHS for five years and started walking dogs after she and her husband lost their dog, Annie. Ruth is a joy to work with, loves to chat with visitors, appreciates hanging out with the dogs, and enjoys getting to know the personalities of the pets here at the shelter. Ruth encourages others to try volunteering because, “it is great fun and you meet wonderful people!” We think you are wonderful, Ruth! We also want to give a shout out to a group of volunteers that showed up to help weed, put down mulch and did a general yard cleanup this past spring. This group really worked hard getting our shelter grounds looking nice and clean. CDHS is blessed in so many ways and our volunteers fill so many niches that need to be filled. We like to make our shelter welcoming both inside and out, and the yard work that needs to be done each and every week is a big part of creating that environment. Thank you to all who help with these tasks!  Volunteer of the Year Ruth Borlaug walks dogs AND spends a large part of her time at the shelter doing yardwork.

Charlie Chaplain Rescued Charlie Chaplain If you follow our Facebook page, you may know the story. This is a portion of our Facebook post of June 17. “On May 30, we found this box outside our door with a note attached. Of course, Tux the cat was not in the box and was nowhere to be found. One of our dog walkers spotted a cat a few times in the last week and we had a trap set, but were not successful. We assumed it was the elusive Tux, and figured he was hanging around, fighting the good fight and trying to survive in this scary, uncertain, outdoor environment. Today this cat was found in the ditch, no longer able to fight. UPDATE FROM AUGUST 7: ADOPTED! We assume this is Tux. He is very skinny, has a wound on his tail, and many ticks. This cat is declawed on ALL four feet. I'm sure like this. We are positive that you can imagine how difficult this situation has been for him. We humans can do better.” will do our best to bring kitty back to health, get some food and UPDATE FROM JULY 22: fluid into him, and take care of any injuries he has.
