As I think about where we started ten years ago, I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved. I’ll admit I do feel some relief! I’m freeing up three weeks of my time every other month to focus on new DNM projects. And I definitely won’t miss having dozens of boxes of magazines cluttering up my hall and basement. Before DNM, I had a 35-year international banking career. In those days my bank account was richer … but my heart was so much poorer. Harper (Co-Advisor) This thesis is an investigation of public health challenges related to dogs in rural and urban communities in southern Ontario, and in remote Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, using cross- sectional observational studies. First, we conducted a scoping review of canine zoonotic and vectorborne research in North American countries, categorized by the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI). Most research was conducted in “very high” and “high” IHDI countries. Second, the prevalence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. were investigated in dogs in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Using Ecohealth and One Health approaches, feces were collected from three dog populations (sled (n=79), shelter (n=111), and community dogs (n=104)). The fecal prevalence of at least one parasite when one sample was chosen at random for all dogs was 8.16% (95% CI: 5.52-11.92), and of Giardia spp., and Cryptosporidium spp. was 4.42% (95% CI: 2.58-7.49) and 6.12% (95% CI: 3.88-9.53), respectively. We identified Giardia intestinalis, zoonotic assemblage B (n=2), and species-specific D (n=3) and E (n=1); and 5 samples containing Cryptosporidium canis.

Broader determinants of population health have received less attention, although this situation is rapidly changing. Against this backdrop, our specific contribution to the literature on ethics and law vis-à-vis promoting population health is to open up the ubiquitous presence of pets within cities and towns for further discussion. An expanding body of research suggests that pet animals are deeply relevant to people’s health (negatively and positively). Pet bylaws adopted by town and city councils have largely escaped notice, yet they are meaningful to consider in relation to everyday practices, social norms, and cultural values, and thus in relation to population health. Nevertheless, not least because they pivot on defining pets as private property belonging to individual people, pet bylaws raise emotionally charged ethical issues that have yet to be tackled in any of the health research on pet ownership.

Schuller {This is a follow-up article to "Canine Paradigm Shift: Dogs on a Raw Diet", November/December 2003, Volume 1 Issue 5 of Kennel Up which covered aspects of why dog guardians feed raw as well as addressing some of the 'concerns' brought forward by those who may be unfamiliar or sceptical.} One of the most reassuring aspects of switching your dog to a raw diet is that you have control of the quality of what your dog eats. For generations, human mothers have taken control over what they feed their children and families; now, dog guardians are doing the same thing for their pets. Family doctors and nutritionists are jumping on the bandwagon encouraging us to eat fewer (or no) processed foods and to include more natural foods. In turn, dog guardians are also looking to nature, at what canines would eat if in the wild. Sure, commercial kibble is convenient but it lacks the natural enzymes, nourishment, and variety required to ensure a strong immune system, efficient energy fuels, and the quality of life that natural food provides. BEFORE YOU START Before getting started, I highly recommend to research by reading at least one (if not more) of the books available by qualified individuals on the topic of feeding a raw diet. The book I recommend the most, because it is easy to follow and understand and provides detailed information for the newcomer to feeding raw, is "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats - The Ultimate Diet" by Kymythy Schultz.
