APRIL 2014 3 SPECIAL FEATURE Music’s in the Airin Basel

Basel is a very musical city, with many of its inhabitants playing at least one instrument. Fasnacht plays no small role in Baslers’ musicality, with most of the participants playing either drums or piccolo flutes in one of the “Cliques” or another instrument in a Guggemusik band. Accordingly, an abundance of private and state-sponsored music schools, music clubs, and music organizations of all kinds are available to help introduce children of all ages as well as adults to music in all its facets. But not only are there plenty of options in Basel to actively participate in making music, there are also countless opportunities to listen to music. In addition to a plethora of musical concerts and shows that visit the city each year, Basel also has its own symphony orchestra, which performs in many different settings. Moreover, a variety of concert series and festivals are staged here annually, including the Baloise Session, Em Bebbi sy Jazz, Summer Blues Basel, Im Fluss, BScene, and the Basel Tattoo, just to name a few! This month is no exception, as Basel will host both the Jazz Festival Basel, which will feature two dozen jazz bands of international repu- tation in various locations throughout the city, as well as the annual Blues Festival Basel, which is preceded by a special “Blues-Train” weekend.

Relay Race “Quer Durch Basel” April 5 Everyone is invited to join the 33rd edition of this special relay race through the center of Basel. The route, which loops between Bar- füsserplatz and Marktplatz, is 825m long for children and 1515m long for adults, offering an attractive competition arena for teams of different age groups and athletic fitness. There is also a category for handicapped participants that is 695m long. Each team con- sists of 6 participants and costs CHF 60 for adult teams or CHF 30 for kids’ teams. You can register online up until March 29, or you can late-register until 12:00 on April 5 in person at KOST Mode and Sport at Freie Strasse 51 in Basel (late registration costs an additional CHF 10). Approximate start times will be listed online, but exact start times will be announced on the day of the race, based on the number of participating teams. BVB Ticket Machine: The Besucherparkkarte can also be purchased from the Billet- automaten (ticket-dispensing machines) of all BVB bus or tram stops. If you switch the language to English on the bottom right hand corner of the display, you can then choose “Other Tick- ets”, then touch “Half or full day park cards.” You will then be asked to enter a desired date—you can purchase it for the same day or for a later date—before you pay the appropriate fee. The advantage of buying it from the BVB ticket machine is that you need not enter your license plate number, which means that the card can be used for any car, as long as it is still valid.

No-Parking Zones Several street signs signal parking restrictions. The blue circle with a red outline and a single red slash through it indicates that parking is not allowed but you may stop briefly to drop off or pick up passengers or goods. A blue circle with a red outline and two diagonal red slashes through it indicates that absolutely no parking or stopping is allowed. Yellow lines painted on the street, containing a yellow diagonal cross, indicate parking zones reserved for taxis, travel buses, travel cars, police, hotel pick-up and drop-off, delivery services, handicap transports, etc. Sometimes you may park in these yellow zones overnight or on Sundays, where indicated. Be sure to check the signs!

Parking Fines While most basic parking infractions incur a fine of CHF 40, fines can be up to CHF 120 for more serious infractions, such as parking less than 10 m from a bus/tram stop or parking on a crosswalk, bicycle lane, near a fire hydrant, or on a sidewalk without leaving at least 1.5 m space for pedestrians to pass. A Final Word Note that the purchase of parking permits that allows you to park in blue zones for a defined or unlimited amount of time does not guarantee that you will find a parking space! In fact, the canton Basel-Stadt recently has received some criticism that there is no ceiling on the number of parking permits that they issue/sell, even though the number of available parking spaces is indeed limited.
