German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject. -

If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

(This course is also offered for graduate students as German 401.) Presumes no knowledge of the German language. In the course students learn basic vocabulary around topics such as classroom objects, daily routines, descriptions of people and objects, simple narration in present time, etc. German 101 covers material presented in the textbook VORSPRUNG from Kapitel 1 to Kapitel 6. Students read and discuss “real” texts (written by and for native) speakers from the start. Grammar is explained using examples from these texts as well as from a graphic novel, told in installments, that traces the journey of an American exchange student, Anna Adler, to the university in Tübingen as well as her adventures once there. The course also offers basic cultural insights and comparisons that are further elaborated on in second-year courses. Testing is done in increments of chapter quizzes; there is no mid- term and no traditional final exam. Students also complete writing & reading assignments as well as matching assessments, all with a take-home component. There are two oral projects. Class participation is encouraged and an attendance policy is in place. This course cannot be audited. -

Notes on Contributors Deirdre Byrnes teaches German at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She was awarded her PhD from University College Dublin. She is the author of the monograph Rereading Monika Maron: Text, Counter- Text and Context. Her teaching and research interests include GDR literature, the literature and architecture of the Berlin Republic, and memory discourses. Siobhán Donovan is a Lecturer in German Studies in the School of Languages and Literatures at University College Dublin. Her teaching and research interests lie in the German-speaking literature and culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, German opera, and contemporary Swiss-German literature. She is the author of Der christliche Publizist und sein Glaubensphilosoph: Zur Freundschaft zwischen Matthias Claudius und Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (2004), and co-editor of Music and Literature in German Romanticism (2004). She is one of the editors of a forthcoming collection of essays on Eduard Hanslick with the University of Rochester Press. Carmel Finnan is a Lecturer in German at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick. She studied Modern German Literature at NUI Galway, Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität, Munich and the Humboldt- Universität Berlin. She is the author of Eine Untersuchung des Schreibverfahrens Marieluise Fleißers anhand ihrer Prosatexte (Peter Lang, 2003) and has published on a variety of 20th and 21th century topics, specifically gender and modernity, German-Jewish relations since 1945 and contemporary Swiss literature and culture. Valerie Heffernan is a Lecturer in German at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. In her teaching and research, she focuses on contemporary Swiss literature and contemporary writing by women. -

Classic Poetry Series Ernst Toller - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Ernst Toller(1 December 1893 – 22 May 1939) Ernst Toller was a left-wing German playwright, best known for his Expressionist plays and serving as President of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, for six days. <b>Biography</b> Ernst Toller was born in Samotschin, Poland, on 1st December 1893. His father was a successful Jewish wholesale merchant. He was schooled in Bromberg where depsite describing it as a "school of miseducation and militarization", he was able to begin his literary career with the publication of a number of articles in the local newspaper and then poetry. In 1914 Toller moved to France in order to study law at the University of Grenoble. However, within six months the onset of the First World War meant he had returned home and signed up for the German army. Within a year he was fighting on the front lines, but by 1916 he was taken ill, suffering from "physical exhaustion and a complete nervous breakdown". In January 1917, now lacking his initial enthusiasm for the war and instead shocked by the high level of carnage, he was discharged from the army. Following this, Toller moved to Munich to return to his studies at Heidelberg University. Here he became friends with sociologist Max Weber. In May 1917 the pair took part in the first "Lauensteiner conference", where they cordially disagreed about the course of the war. Whilst Weber argued for the continuation of the war, Toller favoured a negotiated peace. -

“THE DOUBLE BIND” OF 1989: REINTERPRETING SPACE, PLACE, AND IDENTITY IN POSTCOMMUNIST WOMEN’S LITERATURE BY JESSICA LYNN WIENHOLD-BROKISH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctorial Committee: Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky, Chair; Director of Research Professor Nancy Blake Professor Harriet Murav Associate Professor Anke Pinkert Abstract This dissertation is a comparative, cross-cultural exploration of identity construction after 1989 as it pertains to narrative setting and the creation of literary place in postcommunist women’s literature. Through spatial analysis the negotiation between the unresolvable bind of a stable national and personal identity and of a flexible transnational identity are discussed. Russian, German, and Croatian writers, specifically Olga Mukhina, Nina Sadur, Monika Maron, Barbara Honigmann, Angela Krauß, Vedrana Rudan, Dubravka Ugrešić, and Slavenka Drakulić, provide the material for an examination of the proliferation of female writers and the potential for recuperative literary techniques after 1989. Heinrich Mann on his 150th Birthday” in Berlin on 25 March 2021 Good evening from Schloss Bellevue, wherever you are tuning in from. This is not the first time that Berlin’s Academy of the Arts is hosting a ceremony in Heinrich Mann’s honour. In March 1931, invitations were issued for an event on the premises of the Prussian Academy of Arts to congratulate the newly elected Chairman of its Literature Section on his 60th birthday. The guests at the time included Ricarda Huch and Alfred Döblin, and the speakers were Max Liebermann, Adolf Grimme and Thomas Mann. They hailed the great man as a modern artist and “clandestine politician”, as a “grand écrivain” and “European moralist”. That was how the writer Heinrich Mann was feted at the time, in the Weimar Republic. What a wonderful, illustrious gathering to mark his birthday. Today, the Academy of the Arts has issued another invitation to honour Heinrich Mann, this time on his 150th birthday. The setting is, for various reasons, slightly different than it was back then, with a livestream as opposed to a gala reception, a video message as opposed to a speech, and the Federal President in attendance as opposed to the great man’s brother and Nobel Laureate. Nevertheless, I am delighted that we want to try this evening to revive the spirit of Heinrich Mann and his age. We want to take a closer look at a writer, who after his death in 1950 was co opted by the GDR for its own political ends, who was eclipsed in West Germany by his renowned younger brother, and who is not forgotten yet whose works are seldom read today. -
